Looks two points better than a 62.

    Nice Morgan ya' got there.

I go against the grain here because I really like the rattler holders and my favorite coin to collect is the Morgan dollar.

    I have a problem I know...but I am working on it. image

To me it looks like and AU58 that was upgraded to MS62 because of the clean surfaces.

I've never owned a Morgan, probably never will. I'm in the minority but I just cannot get excited about the series.

That's what I was thinking, if I belonged to CAC I would send it in.

Although CAC has not been taking in new members for quite a while, there are some who are "in". Check with a dealer that you frequent for submittal.

    BTW...nice looking Morgan!

I'm not seeing any rub. I would say at least a 64. Did you buy the holder or the coin?

I'd say one point better. The coin looks like an MS-64 from the mark perspective, but it has subdued luster. That condemns it to a lower rung on the grading scale in the eyes of Morgan Dollar graders.

Although New Orleans Mint dollars have reputation for weak strikes and dull luster, 1884-O dollars are an exception. They are generally well made. This one is actually slightly below average with respect to mint luster.

Agree, the coin is an MS 64 by today's standards. I like the series but the 1883 O, 1884 O and 1885 O are held to a very high standard because there are so many nice ones available. Definitely a CAC candidate.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

It's a nice coin for the grade, but it would be a waste of money to send it to CAC. Even if it gold stickers, a 63 or 64 isn't worth the additional cost. Not every nice coin needs JA's stamp of approval.

Everytime I read a thread title like this I think : "Perfect thread title, but…." I don't want to hijack them with a finished statement . For instance :

" I'm not a fan of the New Orleans Saints, but Gaudens' Saints I'd wear a cheer leader's outfit for "… (just an aside and example) Carry on and have a nice day.

What about this coin is appealing to you, not being a Morgan dollar fan? That's not a criticism as it's a nice coin and I can see how somebody would like it. It's also a common date, untoned New Orleans Morgan dollar which is not a difficult coin to find. Thanks.

Is that true? Everytime I see a gold CAC sticker, the dealer and perhaps his customers, lose their sanity and price the coin higher than if it had gotten the next grade or two higher.

Bill, I suppose you are probably right as people collect rattlers and Gold CAC coins as desirable collectibles in their own right. Yes, this coin may be a 63 or even a 64 but I don't see it getting a gold sticker. I feel like those are usually reserved for coins with superior eye appeal as well as being obviously undergraded.

As astrorat asked, if you like this coin but are not usually a fan of Morgans, what do you not like about others you have seen?
  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭
That is a nice Morgan... and I agree with others...likely a 63, maybe 64. I like Morgans, particularly CC Morgans...but I like them clean such as yours. Cheers, RickO

just to many of them. When I go to a show, local or national, the dealers tables are just loaded with them.
