The 1842-O half dime listed on eBay by this seller is bogus, and should be reported. The other half dimes he lists are also counterfeit, and although it is not my series, the 1916-D dime also appears to be fake.

I can sympathize. It must be frustrating for legitimate sellers when they see high bids for obvious fakes. This seller has only four feedbacks, and only two of them were for items sold, and allow you to view the sold items, but they include an 1893-S Morgan and an 1878-CC quarter. While neither of these are in my series of interest, they both appear to be bogus; I would never have purchased either of them. And the buyer's comments are full of praise!

Actually there are about 100 or more good items for each fake. Your blanket statement has holes in it.

BUT if you wonder around like an ignorant cow in pasture, you will be assured of stepping into a gopher hole that could break your leg. My advice is deal with the people you know in eBay. Don't go wondering around especially to places like Hong Kong or to sellers who offer no return privileges .

If a legitimate coin dealer was selling one counterfeit for every 100 coins he was offering he'd get run out of town. EBay is a bit different since they are taking auction lots, but for the collector who is not well versed in spotting counterfeits, the principle as merit.

Did anyone grab a pic of it? It got pulled before I saw it. Was it in a slab?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

No, all of the coins were raw. The 1842-O half dime was a fairly good representation of a period Liberty Seated half dime, but to anyone familiar with the series, the mint mark was too large, and was further to the right than on any known reverse for that date. The 1863 and 1866 half dimes were of slightly poorer quality, but again did not match any known die marriages. I would leave any detailed discussion of the 1916-D dime and the 1893-S Morgan to the experts in those respective series, but even to me they were obvious fakes. The 1878-CC quarter, which had sold earlier, also had a very dubious appearance, although the photographs were not of the highest quality.

The only information that I can bring back up (that has not been deleted by eBay) is his feedback history

I don't known a the size of mint marks and the positioning. It just looked like a crude casting to me.

Agree...He & several other forum members sing that same song over & over again w/o having any facts to prove it. Yes, there are counterfeits on eBay, Craigslist, Amazon and even in BM shops. In addition, some even slip through and get graded by TPG's.
