The 1821 large cent is one of the semi-key dates in the Matron Head Large cent series. As a date it second to the 1823, but you could drive a truck between the difference in rarity for the two dates. This one is graded AU-58 with good color.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Beautiful 1821 large cent, Bill.

Overrated as a better date, but the vast majority of them are dark, low to mid grade pieces.

    This is a primo exception.

Great coins everyone. I missed FUN this year due to my wife's surgery.
Nice large cent Bill. I've been looking a lot of years for an 1821 that I could be happy with. One of the few large cents I'm still missing.

One of two large cents I acquired, both upgrades to my set,

the S-291 small date, toughest of the 1812's to find in higher grades:

May I ask what the premium is for a NICE coin like this in a Doily holder as compared to a similiar coin in a "plain" holder?

    Grandam:

I don't know if the other 1864 in the census is a "L" or no "L" like this one - roughly $200 premium, reasonable for a hard to find Doily type coin.

While I find the BTW commemorative half one of the least aesthetically appealing coins in all of U.S. coinage, I find your new acquisition a rather aesthetically appealing example indeed.

I am a little slow at posting my "accidental" win at FUN through Heritage. I already had this type of Seated (Half) Dime in my collection, but an upgrade certainly does not hurt.

Finally got around to shooting pictures of my FUN newps

First year of issue seated dollar, PCGS 30

    image

1878 VAM 224 Morgan dollar, PCGS 63. 168 reeds on the collar, and the only die pair that used this collar.

    image

    1882-O/S VAM 5 Morgan dollar, PCGS 62.

    image

1885 VAM 9E Morgan dollar, PCGS 66. Gorgeous coin, lush luster. You can’t see it in the pictures, but the obverse die has a bunch of “water spots” or craters on it that I can only explain as being hubbed through moisture.

    image

1882-CC VAM 3 Morgan dollar, PCGS 64+PL. Missed being graded 65PL probably because of the strike over the ear or the planchet flaw in the upper left obverse field.
