How far is too far?

TiborTibor Posts: 3,669 ✭✭✭✭✭
How far will you drive to a coin show? The 20-40 dealer club promoted ones. If you have thoughts on the larger shows ie. ANA, FUN or LongBeach lets hear them. For the small club shows an hour to hour and half is my limit.

I'll only travel to the large shows. I'll fly in and take a taxi (or for Baltimore, I'll take the train from Union Station in DC).

I don't go to small shows any more.

Long Beach is about an hour's drive for me and I wouldn't travel any farther.

Since the same dealers are taking their same inventory on the major coin circuit, I prefer to let the coins travel to me instead of me traveling to the coins.

I don't do any shows. I use dealers that I can send back if not satisfied with no problems and the ones who does good photos.

3 hour drive. If I flew it wouldn't be only for a coin show. I'd want other planned entertainment after the coin show.

I'm going to drive from just outside Philadelphia, PA to the FUN show in January. I'm retired and don't have anything better to do. I hope it's warm not like the last time I was there.

I drive 400 miles to Vegas . .that is my limit.

Normal local shows are 5 miles away.

I fly to anything beyond that . .

About 45 minutes for a small show. I did so today.

I am lucky to have multiple large shows within driving distance of me during each year.

Winter FUN, Summer FUN and about 5 other 100+ table shows.

I am looking forward to Winter FUN in Tampa this year! Wooooohoooooooooo!

Just a short drive away and I plan to drive over there on Thursday and Friday. image

366 miles to Long Beach. Too far for me but I justified it by transporting 65 coins for grading.

On the return trip I drove the Pacific Coast Highway north to Monterey. Now that was fun!

Nice! (The coins as rationale and the PCH drive to Monterey)

3 hours driving to a show is my limit.

If Spokane ever hosted a major show (probably not likely) I'd go 5 hours.

When I was in the US , 60-90 min to a small/regional show. 2:30hrs to Rosemont or Schaumburg, 2Hr flight to Baltimore. I could find several reasons to fly to FUN in January. Now I fly 1-2hrs to auctions and shows in Europe.

When I was more active, I would drive five hours to Chicago and once drove eight to Dalton, not to mention flying regularly to Orlando to FUN shows. I really enjoyed coin people and coin shows.

Now, as a largely dormant collector, a thirty minute drive seems too far to go.image

A large show? Maybe 60-100 miles

A small show? Maybe 20-30 miles

Depends on the dealers, if I know anyone else going, etc.

The annual state shows are a decent haul... 4 hours each way.

There will be an Early American Copper show in Charlotte this year,,, about four hours.

A few smaller ones that are about 2 hours.

Plan flying to three majors and using up some air miles
  • I have two shows a month about an hour from me. I go to them sometimes but that is it. Why burn gas and risk having an accident when the computer is so close.

6 hours one way to the Baltimore show. Done that 15-20 times over the past 40 years. Never once did I consider taking a plane or train, even if cheaper. Always liked the idea of being able to leave the show at the exact time I wanted.

In my youth, I recall hitting 4-5 different local coin shows in Long Island/NY/NJ on one Sunday, covering about 400 miles. That was nuts. I recall finding a G-VG 1851-0 quarter for $20. That still barely covered the gas for the trip.

I almost always fly to shows that are outside of Florida. When I drive the limit is usually about 100 miles one way or so. I rarely to local shows that are more than 10 or 20 miles away. It's just not worth my while.

So far as too far to fly, I passed on an Early American Coppers convention a couple of years ago that was in Seatle. The diagonal flight from Florida to Washington State was just long.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I would drive 50 miles for a small show...there are none here. If I were to go to a large

show (there are none in this state) I would fly.... Cheers, RickO
