Do most people haggle on price on the BST?

I have had a few instances were I was interested in a coin but the price was maybe a little more than I would want to give. It did not say or best offer so I did not make an offer and just let it go. I would like to know what most of the forum members do in cases like that.

    If I am interested in a coin I will send the seller a PM and ask for their "best price". If it is agreeable, I'll buy it. If not, I will state my offer and let it ride.

    If a coin is fairly priced, I just buy it. If it's a little over priced, I make a counter offer. If it's greatly over priced, I just move along and don't even bother with a counter offer.

    I have been surprised to find my offers accepted on other forums even when the asking price was much higher than my offer. You never know. You don't have anything to lose. Just make a fair offer if interested and see what happens.

    I go by what the coin tells me.



    Cheapest is very seldom the best or even nice.

    Most prices on the BST are not "carved in stone." Make your best offer ... the worst that can happen is a counter offer or decline. I've never paid full price for items purchased on the BST nor will I pay via PPG.

    As a seller, if the price is as low as I'm willing to go I make that clear in the post. If there's wiggle room I say so.

    Always politely ask for "best price" unless it's clear that the price is firm!
    ....still there have been many times where I've felt that the price was nice to begin with and just pulled the trigger...that's almost always true for the good stuff if you can find the good stuff priced nice.

    I agree with both of these from a buyer and seller perspective.
    And if my coin is already fairly priced, which it generally is, and someone sends me a ridiculous lowball offer, they'll likely just get ignored.

    when I buy --- I usually PM with "What is your best price?" on an item.

    when I sell ---it tends to be split evenly between "What is your best price?" and a purchase at the price stated.

    I would consider it very strange to meet a COIN collector who would stoop to.....haggling.

    If the price looks really good I'm inclined to pay it before someone else does, otherwise I will probably submit an offer. When selling, it depends mostly on how my asking price stacks up against prices realized in other venues.

    If the coin is priced fairly,(even if a bit high) I will usually just pay the asking price. Have lost out on some nice coins because I was trying to squeeze a couple dollars off. If I see a coin that I like that is priced higher than I would want to pay, I will usually just pass, or come back in a couple days if it hasn't sold to make an offer.



    Selling, I have had a mix of people pay asking price and those making an offer.

    As long as you do it in a respectful manner, the seller (assuming he/she is a decent person) should have no problem with it.
    The point of a successful transaction is for both parties to feel good about it and be willing to do another with the other party.

    If someone says "Best Price" to me, I typically ignore them.



    You either like the coin at my price, or you counter my price with your price. If you simply say, "Best Offer", you're just low-balling.

    I don't mind a reasonable offer (BST or EBay) as my goal is somewhere between cost and reatail. I may accept, reject, or make a counter offer.

    Nothing wrong with haggling. Just know when to quit if you get the feeling you've crossed over the line to "bottom feeder".

    I will say "most" people sure try on here. Some seriously just want a little off, some do it for sport and refuse and absolutely not pay an asking price. And I thought my Mother taught me good manors to say hello, please and thanks you.

    Some won't like what I have to say here and I'm OK with that. Most things I've sold from my collection are nice and if they want to compare Ebay prices then sorry, you need to go to Ebay. I have received so many PM's through the years yes, our very own board members. They send me an unsolicited offer, no hello, just "I'll give you this. Well I have said I'm sure you would. image

    I turned down an offer that was oh so close but I didn't like the tone and of course no hello. So darn it say hello even if you don't mean it. OK, please don't get me going. I could never be a Dealer with a whole lot of rude people out there. Yes again, even on here. They just act different in private then when they post in public.

    Back again.I wanted to be more clear on my previous post. I know there our nice coins on Ebay sometimes, I only mentioned if they want Ebay prices they can go there. Because just as many Dealers do. They will compare prices to a coin on Ebay that's a POS cleaned and shouldn't even be in a straight grade holder. OK done..... for now.image

    I lied, not done yet I have indeed made an offer before or if I felt it was a touch high I've asked if they can do better. But I don't start post posting previous auction prices of any coin out there.

    The only time I would not consider haggling is if the listing says the price is firm. Other than that, it depends on the coin and posted price.

    Good answers. It sounds like most people don't have a problem with a offer or a little haggling as long as it is done in a polite manner and does not go overboard.

    When I really want a coin and the price is in the ballpark, I just pay the price. When the price is a bit out of the ballpark and/or I could live without the coin anyways, I'll maybe send an offer.



    On my BST listings, I have some folks pay the full price and others send offers. Some coins I'll have room to work, others I won't have room. But I never get upset when people send offers here on the BST or on eBay, even if they are lowball offers. The worst I'll say is no... image



    Seems like some sellers have a problem with offers though, but you also see lots of grumpy dealers trying to sell coins at shows as well, so I don't put too much thought into the matter.

    I usually get PM'd with offers, and I can't say I've had one yet that wasn't fair. I've accepted some and rejected some...
