Common coins with uncommon qualities

BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,359 ✭✭✭✭✭
Some coins transcend their rarity or place within their series. Eye appeal is like a fourth dimension which puts common coins to the top of high pedestals.

I'm heading home in a few weeks for my bi-annual trip to the U.S. and I see my collection then and re-remember some of my coins. This 1853-D $5 is common within the Dahlonega half Eagles series but is decidedly uncommon in its coloration and eye appeal and I am looking forward to seeing it. Graded a lowly EF40, I would not part with it for AU money.

Post your uncommon common coins.

An 06-o quarter that has The Look. Common date- not in the top group of a dozen after the Big Three, but really sweet and a little unusual to find looking like this.
It's in my current submission to The House for grading.
    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

The 1853-D half eagle is not a common coin per say, but it is the most Dahlonega Mint coin with an estimated population of 650 to 750+ pieces. For a Dahloega Mint coin, that's common. The interesting thing abou this year is that 80% of the gold that the Dahlonega Mint processed in 1853 came from California. Returning miners brought it back with them.

TDN, That's one of the most eye appealing Trade Dollars I've ever seen.

  • Nice to see some really cool coins! I like the toned Merc and the original looking 1906-o Barber.

TDN - you are spoiling us! I can't stop looking at that 1876, Beautiful.

    Lance - superb toning!

Stuart - another great looking CC!

TDN - can't stop looking at that Trade Dollar......

I have to admit that when I saw "common coins" in the thread title, I wasn't expecting to see Dahlonega gold twice in this thread!

I have to believe this is one of the nicer (if not the nicest) MS66RD I've seen of this rather common coin. Had to add it to my collection image

Ok, I'll add one more...had this coin for a little while, and it's one of those I'll have for as long as I can foresee. It has a ton of frost and luster and character in hand, even though it's a bit beat up.

Not a popularity contest, but I generally am not a great gold fan and Bill Jones' 53-D is quite beautiful (even if it was not mint marked).

    Dogwood,

From my experience that is not a common coin,it is for sure an uncommon coin in that condition.

What a beautiful coin,I would safely guess AU 58 possibly 63-64

    Congrats on acquiring it.

1939 NGC PF67* CAMEO - The photographer did an excellent job, but it really pops in hand (especially the reverse which approaches DCAM/UCAM).

Take the Mercury Dime I posted for instance: 1942 proof dimes are fairly common, but the pieces are very uncommon (in fact rare) with heavy cameo contrasts. Other examples would be common business strike coins that are seldom seen with prooflike tendencies, and common date coins that have very uncommon (and eye appealing) toning.
