i know very little about these early copper examples
this one here looks to be quite well preserved
that cud at 1st looked like it was a chunk out of it but looking closer...yup quite the cud there

Is that area raised or is it below the surface? If it is below the surface of the piece, it is a lamination, not a cud. It looks like it is below the surface in the photo.

the optical illusi8n factor for numismatic images never ceases to amaze me (or fool me, including my own images); it is a cud.

I'd guess cud, given that the corresponding lettering is gone on the obverse. It's a pretty convincing illusion though.

That is really well preserved. I don't know a lot about them but 15 years ago or so I won a raffle at my local coin club meeting and went up to pick out something from the case and this was by far the most interesting.
To this day, it's one of my favorite pieces.

This must be an early Gold Shield coin because it looks like it had the photo scan, and not a TrueView taken.
