I am unfamiliar with the beautiful WHAT IF 1955 TOPPS MANTLE you chose. Would you please kindly enlighten me when Topps produced this one? Thanks in advance. ---Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)
Thanks ever so much for coming to my rescue. I was getting miffed nobody had responded, but then it should have come as no surprise to me. With modern Mantles, especially of the fantasy nature, their respective heritage and creator will not be generally known.
I devoted part of the last chapter of my forthcoming book on postwar regional / food issues, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, to a pair of fantasy cards I did with the help of a dear lady who is very skilled and experienced as a professional photographer, artist, and computer graphic artist. The results were absolutely smashing, even if I do say so myself. They were cards that never were, but should have been, of Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson, from a particularly well-loved regional of the 1950s. I would say more, but since I'm not uploading scans, preferring to save them for my customers, I had best shush, and hope you will understand.
Again, I thank you bro, and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful, enjoyable 2016.
Was looking through this thread and it was such a good one figured I would bump it. Also, would be neat to see any recent additions anyone has picked up.
Not a new pick up but I don't think I posted it early in the thread. My apologies if it is indeed a re-post. Currently, I'm on the lookout for a nicely centered Red Heart Mantle in the 4-5 range. Great thread to go back and revisit for sure.

Now that we are done with the winter doldrums time to start buying some stuff! Good to hear from you and have not heard from Belz in a while. He was pretty close to the Mantle run being complete needing a 52 and 53 I believe. Funny thing is I have 52,53,56, and 60 - sold my 66 and 68, so I have the tough ones done on the Mantle run and need to get cracking on it. Figure if I can knock out 57 and 58 this year plus 67-69 which are the easy ones. I should be pretty close.

Beautiful 56 Mantle pickup there. That is an excellent example.
Thanks. I look at it like the way I am sure you look at your 52 Topps. "Wow, can't believe I own this thing" lol. The card is beautiful. Perfect centering front and back. I looked at 8.5's on VCP and saw that PSA has given out that grade even with the little print dots but not 9's. The corners are sharp and I really think this one is an 8.5 candidate. No rush to send it in yet because I am not selling it but it will make its way back to PSA eventually.
I would give it a shot and see. My 56 Mantle 8.5 was sent several times to PSA to try to bump it but every time it was turned down. It just sold in pwcc a couple of weeks ago, and pwcc gave it their certified high end sticker and the write up by them stated it was nicer than any 9 they had brokered. My 56 Mays PSA thought would definitely bump and still cannot see why it did not. PWCC also gave it their certified high end sticker - card sold for a record $1700+. I have one 56 Mantle 8 left that was nice enough side by side to my 8.5 that I kept it and sold the 8.5, and I am looking at getting another 8 soon. The really tough one to find is a 1957 centered - cannot find an 8 anywhere. Congrats again on the nice pickup.

In my dozen or so years of creating custom baseball, football and non-sports cards, I've done three Mantles; in the styles of 1954 and 1955 Topps and 1952 Red Man.
AUPT forgot to mention another delectable fantasy Mickey Mantle he did. It was a whopper! He recreated AN ENTIRE 1963 JELL-O BLACK RASPBERRY BOX with the Mantle card on the back, using a variant photo of Mick. The photo he used is priceless, for it was this great shot of him that Jell-O used for their large advertising posters/placards that were displayed at grocery stores in '63. Bob's creation was sweet indeed! I treasure it highly!
After seeing Bob's fantasy '55 Topps, I will try to get that one some day.
Hope we can arouse this rousing thread again.
Cheers, guys and gals. ---Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)
Okay, since I've got you Mantle experts here... I have a 54 Dandee Mantle that has a plain cardboard back to it. It looks like it was cut out of something. Have any of you ever seen anything like that? It looks old, but who knows... Not at home atm, so can't post a pic. Any idea if something like that would hold any value? Thanks for any input!
