Low grade gems that you would never part with...

While in a modest grade far from in the condition census, some coins just deserve to be in a fine collection. Post you EF or below gems.

Most of my collection is EF and below, so I've got this one covered. Here are some recent purchases.

This 1797 half dime is best lower grade early half dime I have seen. It has no significant marks or damage, which is very unusual, and it shows no signs of cleaning. Back in the day it was "the finest Fine-15 on the planet." Today it is in a VF holder.

The 1847-O Half Eagle is very nice and original. The 1896 quarter looks to me to be a coin that was cleaned long ago and retoned to pretty but very unoriginal colors. I could be wrong about the quarter but the sheen on the surface is what makes me very wary of it.

I found it in Switzerland. I think it's is 100% original.

This is an XF small stars, one of the tougher 1807 CBH's. Bought through BST from a forum member. I can't see letting it go down the road.

The Draped Bust, Small Eagle Half Dollar, which was minted from in 1796-7, is the #1 silver type coin. This is the piece that is missing from most type sets, and it was the last coin I acquired to complete my half cent through dollar coin set. I would have preferred to have purchased this in VF, but this coin, which is a Fine-15, was what was available. My chances of upgrading it at this point are not great.

ShadyDave: Thanks for your above quoted post about my 1890-CC $20 Liberty Double Eagle.

In reply, I think what you're referring to is actually a reed mark created by contact with the edge of another coin.

There are many lower grade coins that are very desirable in collections (as demonstrated in the preceding posts). While I appreciate high quality,
coins that have experienced commerce are also very attractive. Cheers, RickO

    1837 T.D. Seaman - Butcher, Belleville NJ, HT-204B / Low-155, Rarity-5

I've had a couple chances to upgrade this variety over the years as at XF45 it's the lowest grade hard times token I own...

Unfortunately the others weren't as wholesome so I just passed.

Bought this years ago when my target was XF. PCGS graded 40. It's not what I shoot for today but it's a keeper.

I love the look of this recent acquisition, so I'll keep it even if I eventually upgrade the slot in my set:

Even though these days I primarily focus on San Francisco gold, I still have some nice San Francisco silver that will always have a place in the collection:

More San Francisco silver image ... I lived in Hawaii for a while as a kid. This coin is part of my 1c, 10c, 25c, 50c, $1 very circulated Hawaii set that I'll always enjoy:

My new favorite coin. I believe I would sell all the others before this one left my care.
