Question to dealers - what is the most memorable coin you have ever handled?

Not necessarily the most expensive or the highest graded, but the one that sticks out in your mind and you won't ever forget?

I was a small dealer so some of the coins that are now in my collection are more impressive. Still I did handle some interesting pieces.

One that sticks out in my mind was an 1898 half eagle that was in NGC PR-66, Cameo. The coin was virtually flawless, and was every bit as nice as most of the modern Proof commemorative $5 gold coins I have purchased from the mint. Sorry, but I don't have a picture of it.

Another was this 1908 Matte Proof eagle. PCGS conservatively graded it Matte Proof - 65. It was better than that by one or two points, but there was what appeared to a struck through piece of lint in the date which held it back.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I remember a few of the people more than the coins… that's weird, huh ?

I am answering on the basis of fondling, not buying or selling a rarity.

    Story with a moral.

In 1984 Bowers and Ruddy put Elvin Untermann's King of Siam set up for auction. Dave Bowers was showing the coins as a group in the famous morocco leather box. Sort of like a tray of canapés. "Take it out and look at it", says Dave. Each and every coin raw and in-hand. It made a singular impression. . . image

Very special coins. I was NOT a very special person. Dave knew I wasn't a buyer. But I was, like everyone else in the room, a viewer.

Moral: You will have the opportunity to go to damn near any major auction and LOOK. Nowadays, anyone can handle an 1913 V-nic, Extremely High Relief, a MS66+ early gold coin or whatever their dream might be. The single best available venue to see anything, up to and especially the rarest of the rare, is a major auction. They do not restrict your viewing based on your credit line. You will see more coins per hour than any time spent on the bourse floor.

The most memorable coin I ever mishandled? Subsequent to my buying the Garrett 1804 $1, I was playing show and tell in Stacks' office. My 9 year old daughter was with me, and I handed it to her and remarked "Look, Rachel. This will pay for your college". Let's just say that, but a second or two later, I was contemplating the thickness of the carpet of the floor as I bent over to pick up this former jewel. . . . . image

Not just a single memorable coin,

My father's collection, after he passed away.
Hard to look at any of the coins and not remember him.

Octagonal Pan-Pac $50 Gold in MS65. That was a great day, not the most expensive coin we bought that day but by far the most impressive to me.

The 1893-S Morgan that WAS is the MS67 holder, and was downgraded by NGC to a 66. Very cool to be a part of getting that into the number NGC Collection at the time.

I actually really regret that they weren't freshly done, haha. We'd had that lovely lady for a while, and then suddenly she was leaving me. I just took quick cell phone pics on the bourse floor before she walked out of my life forever. I was so sad to see her go. :'(

It's not the most expensive one, but this is one of the first coins we handled that got a lot of publicity:

Probably the most memorable numismatic item is (present tense) not even a coin, but rather a high grade Betts 615. In layman's terms, this is a Libertas Americana medal. image

    Done, Tim.

My most memorable is my logo. My most memorable transaction was brokering the Wilkison pattern collection that this is from.

Define handled. I have been a dealer, but as an ANACS AUthenticator I have handled things like the 1870-S half dime and the Linderman 1804 dollar.

"Nowadays, anyone can handle an 1913 V-nic"

I think by handle, the OP means buy and sell, not just touch.
