<< <i>Does anyone know if Legend Numismatics makes offers on coins?? I've been thinking about selling off some of my proof sets lately...mostly 80's and 90's U.S. but truly JAW DROPPING coins. I mean these coins are NICE. I would love to see if Legend would be interested in them as I have heard from many acquaintances that Laura is a pleasure to do business with. Anyways +1...Cheers, RonO >>
Legend does handle US proofs from the 1880s and 1890s so you have some, you should reach out ot them. >>
Oops should have been more specific. These sets are from the 1980's and 1990's. Although now that you mention it I do have an 1885 Indian cent. I wonder if they might want that? Again my grading skills are not the best but I would say it would probably grade Very Uncirculated to About Fine...maybe I'll send it to ANACS and then give Laura a ring...Cheers, RonO >>
Hi, RonO, In the event that you are not pulling our collective leg, I suggest that you look at the coins in the Legend inventory and after that minimal amount of research, if you think that your coin(s) is consistent with what Legend sells, I would certainly shoot Laura an email. Or, if that is too arduous, just don't bother. Either path will likely lead to the same outcome.
This Legend-Elwell story is very unfortunate, from start to finish. >>
Thanks for the advice! From browsing the Legend inventory it looks like they don't have ANY 1980's or 90's proof sets! I hope that means that Laura will be willing to pay top dollar to acquire my sets...Cheers, RonO
Unfortunately, I could not read beyond the first paragraph. She should be embarrassed by her poor use of grammar. I suggest that she hire an editor (or ask a friend who knows how to write) before posting stuff like that.
Her logic is sound if you have infinite resources. The trouble is what if you can't afford an 1893-S dollar in Mint State? What if the best you can afford is say a VF? Does that obligate you to buy the common and semi-key day coins in VF? I don't think so. If you enjoy attractive coins, why can't you mix your sets with the Mint State coins you can afford combined with lower grades for the key dates you can afford?
I enjoy nice collector grade coins for the most part. I have a few outliers in the higher grades, and virtually no outliers in the "junk problem grades."
The fact that your collection is not "grade balanced" doesn't mean anything. Very few collections are ever sold intact on the retail basis. When a collector sells a collection to dealer, it is almost always broken up and sold piecemeal. The fact that some coins are not good as some others really doesn't matter.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I was wondering what this message was about since it has nothing to do with the thread. Then I clicked on the link in the OP and now this message makes sense. The original link no longer goes to the Ripoff report case closed article.

Sad, irrespective of the circumstances. Can anyone provide factual information about Mr. Elwell's death, or is the notion of suicide following the lawsuit just unhealthy Internet conjecture?
I can identify many losers in this drama but no winners apart, perhaps, from a handful of attorneys.
Legend Hot Topics posts have a tendency to spiral out of control quickly, and generally earn post counts into the hundreds. Will see where this one goes...
Looks like Legend has resolved the case with Paul Elwell. Link above. >>

I have to wonder, is it really worthwhile suing a defendant who is judgement proof?
Time alone would probably have had the same outcome.

Sometimes, yes. It sends a message to others who may be tempted to make similar libelous statements.
In both instances, we are left to wonder - WHY ?
There is no logic. Questions can not be answered.
