I've seen coins with those little rim dings in PCGS holders. Too bad they don't offer a service where you can send a pic and they will say yay or nay BEFORE you send it in. On the obverse one, I wouldn't waste my money. The reverse one would slab.

I think too major to grade without problems, unless it looks better in hand.

I don't see the ding. I see a little black tab holding the coin in place.
Nevermind, I do see it now.....It would grade.

    Yes...it looks outstanding in hand....
  • I don't know much about Morgan dollars but I had a Barber half and a liberty seated dollar both straight grade with rim dings longer than that.

Common date, common grade. I, too, feel the ding is too major to get graded without a details grade. Leave as is.

I have had GSA's not grade for damage and questionable toning, if you can believe that! This would fall into the do not grade category in my mind.

I don't think that coin will get a grade with that rim ding, and even if you ignore the ding, the best you could get is MS-64. The 1884-CC dollar has very little Gray Sheet price spread between MS-60 ($190) and MS-64 ($220). The bottom line is there is no upside to getting this coin certified. It will draw more interest in its GSA holder.

Keep it as is... common date CC and not remarkable condition.. Cheers, RickO
  • You sure that's a ding, and not just some of the black stuff squeezed over the surface?

Even if it is only "black stuff" the price spread between MS-60 and 64 is not enough to pay for the grading and shipping fees. Even if the coin "maxed out," and you got an MS-64, it's just not worth the money to do it.

Cracking it out of a GSA holder, and putting it in a PCGS MS61 holder, if it even grades, is still a losing play. Worth more in the GSA holder because hoarders want them, even with heavy bagmarks and dings.

It is a problem coin that you should sell now, as is, and not look back. The problem isn't going to go away if you hold it.

PCGS now encases the entire coin, GSA holder and all. But having said that, this rim ding might keep it from grading.

I ditto this. That is a gouge, indeed. That thing needs to go on ebay ASAP. Wash your hands of it now and you'll forget all about it before you know it. Even if you have to take a small loss.
