Bought this for half my bid in the Bently sale, $3k for a $6k coin. About 40 exist and the rarest non Civil War No Motto $5, I own 2 of the 3 coins CAC has approved. The other being a "should not exist" MS64 which I would love to own.

Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.
I'd already started my collection of the Hudson pieces but hadn't given much thought to the Fultons. I'd been saving my pennies to bid on the highest-graded example of the Hudson piece I knew was coming up at Heritage's Long Beach auction in June. One of the neighboring lots was this Fulton piece. All of these miniature masterpieces, the size of a gold dollar, are rare. Heritage called the Fulton piece an R-7 (4-12 known). But it didn't indicate that this piece, the sole 67 with none higher, was the pop top for the series. I bid what I felt was the max for the Hudson piece and took a gamble with what I thought was a low-ball bid on the Fulton piece, too. They're collected concurrently and I knew I'd regret missing out of the pop top if I didn't at least make a bid.
And I won it for well under my max. The total was $1100 including the juice.
Since it's the pop top, it's not difficult to research the piece. Turns out it brought $3450 at Stacks about 5 years ago. SCDs are a tiny market and one or two buyers or sellers can obviously make a huge difference in realized prices. But I was thrilled to pick up this piece at a ~70% discount off its 2009 sale price.

<< <i>I just found a 1929 2 1/5 Gold Indian in MS65 and I paid VF price. Poor antique mall guy. He consigned it so I wasn't able to ask him why it was so cheap. 😉 >>
Would like to see what a Two & One Fifth Dollar Gold piece looks like... Since maybe the Antique Gold Guy made out better
Cheers, RickO
I started January by finding the second only graded example of a 1911 D/D RPM #1. I had promised a fellow forum member that if I ever found another – he would be the first to know. By midyear I had found another 3, which were all placed in fellow collectors collections. Thus all 5 known PCGS graded examples have been found by me.
In February I picked a raw 1927 DDO cent which even though it graded only AU, it is the nicest AU for the grade and it only cost me $15 but I ended up with a $300 coin with my former example going to another forum member.
For some strange reason I was able to snag a 1910 S/S RPM 2 in an unattributed holder of which the seller listed it as an RPM, but it still sold for less than a regular 64 R&B 1910 S cent at $208. Current BV for this variety is $1300. Must have been a case of folks being too lazy or unwilling to resubmit for a variety designation?
Next came a cent I have been searching for years. In fact, I even offered a $50 reward for the privilege to just examine anyone’s example with no such luck. Again, the only PCGS graded example was held in a forum collector’s set, which he generously shared with me to examine. And then finally one night while searching on eBay, I took an $8 gamble that paid off with the second only graded example thus far of the 1911 D/D RPM 3.
I made a couple of purchases that turned out better than I expected. The first was a MS 63 Red 1972 DDO #5 that graded MS 65 Red at PCGS. I paid $128 for the coin now BV at $875.
Another purchase came from a dealer who I have dealt with many times who offered me a 1943 DDO in an unattributed MS 64 holder for $500. I cracked it out, hit it with some acetone and it came back MS 65. Since this was a $1500 value increase over what I paid, I felt obligated to call him and ask him if he wanted to buy the coin back as I could not afford to pay him the difference in value. He only laughed and said he was happy I got the grade.
And finally, my last big find. For those who know Lincolns and follow the 1972 DDO series – there is nothing more valuable than DDO #4. I paid $1900 for a MS 64 brown example back in 2007. But later traded it. These have come and gone at auction and always for over $2000. But diligence paid off. As I picked the coin with bad pictures off of eBay for $27 and it now resides in a MS 63 R&B holder with a BV of $3000.
So there you have it. As I said its been a heck of a year for me and my collection and I doubt I can even come close to it this coming year – but I sure will be searching just the same.

I had to pay strong money for this 1838-C $5 gold, but I had been looking for one for more than two years. So I guess that qualifies as my best find.

The best was probably the 1946-S/S 503 I picked on ebay raw. Sent in to PCGS and it was graded 66FB. This is a very scarce variety.
Next favorite was the 1969-P rev of 68 901. Haven't sent this one in yet.
2014 was a good year!
