This year has been very weird. As usual, most individual ticker symbol picks end up underperforming the S&P 500. Recently there has been a cycle of money out of growth stocks and into value stocks. Gilead Sciences, which has grown its earnings over the past TTM versus prior TTM by over 100%, is trading at a TTM P/E ratio of around 10. Colgate palmolive, maker of toothpaste and household products, is being rewarded with a P/E ratio of 27, despite its lackluster growth. The stock market doesn't make sense.

Markets and valuations, usually only make sense in the long term. That's why so many people who think you "have" to trade the market short term, lose money.
Wodka is a good companion for an investment plan...especially on those days when the Russian central bank cranks the rates up to double digits.
Getting to the end of the contest. I have traded around my positions in ARRY and AFMD. Sold a lot of my ARRY earlier in the year, then started buying it lower, then averaging down, then down, then more down. UH oh..getting that sinking feeling. It finally got some decent, not great news on a phase 3 trial yesterday before the market and I dumped it all at the opening, made some money, not a huge percentage. May look at it again if the price drops
Did the exact same thing with AFMD although it had much more ridiculous ups then downs I now own way too much of it again As usual, not sure if that's smart or stupid.
But Congrats to Baley are in order...HALO doesn't have a trial that they can fail miserably before the end of the year do they?
For the 2016 investment contest, I really want to pick more than 4 individual securities/publicly traded commodities.
I would do something like
Long gilead sciences Short tvix Short xiv Long kroger Long cvs pharmacy Long reynolds american Long visa Long lockheed martin Long general dynamics Long phillips 66 ...

Wingsrule has been very kind and gracious to keep track of this for us. If anything, he should limit the picks to two per person, rather than allowing more than 4 of them
(and that might actually help performance; in many cases, folks are choosing offsetting securities which actually hobble their performance instead of improving it)
It's been a wild year, only a few trading days left. Anything can happen!
It seems as though in the updates, dividends are not being factored into total performance...factoring in dividends into total performance, my 4 picks are up 24% total...so divided among 4 picks, that would place me at a gain thus far of 6%...Northrop grumman has appreciated about 30% in price and has paid dividends of about 2% of its price per share as of the first trading day of this year(32% total return)...CVS health is up 3.2% this year and has paid dividends of about 1.45% its price when it began trading this year...vnq is essentially flat (down about half a percent), but it has paid a dividend of almost 4% this year...so my total return on that one is about 3%...Discover financial serivces has sucked this year, depreciating 16.4%, but it has paid dividends of about 2% of its price per share to start the year, so I'm only down about 14% in it...In total returns, I am up a little bit over 6% for the year...don't shortchange me. I am doing better than the results posted indicate.

He explicitly said "You need to advise me when a split or dividend happens. "
The guy is doing this for fun, and on his own, and the rest of us are benefitting from what he is doing (by our enjoyment, our egos, or our greed to win an ASE).
Complaining like this just seems so petty (particularly when the complaint is about something that is addressed in the very first post)

Just my opinion......
Your opinion is foolish. It is silly to tell everybody to privately message you just to factor in dividends (or splits) for any publicly traded stock that is quoted all the time throughout the day that can easily be looked up on google finance. But given your previous posts, it is clear you like to insult me over the internet. And clearly, since everybody posts in this OP's investment contest thread, my desired rules don't seem to matter. 4 is a paltry number of choices we have.

Insult you? Nah. Don't care enough about you to do that.
If you want to play a real investment game, go to a real investment forum.
The OP is obviously having fun doing this AND makes the rules that he wants for what he is doing.
Sorry you feel that it is all about you and nothing up to your high standards, since you must be an obvious wall street mogul.
If the results displayed on this forum claim that I lost 2% when I really gained 1%, or I only made 3% when I really gained 6%, etc, I am going to post here about it. It's a fact. You can look this up. I am not making it up. Anybody can track my picks on google finance...if they have a computer and they know how to read and look these things up. I am not here to throw punches over the internet. I have emailed the OP with the updates of my picks and their dividends. If candidate X won DC and she only has 267 electoral votes at the end of the night because people decided they weren't going to count DC, that is silly. Candidate X really has 270 electoral votes.

Get a grip. It is a GAME, one admirably done for FREE by the OP. Beginning price divided by last price, period. You want him to do all his work for free because you want more complex options. It is a GAME, his GAME, his RULES, which by the way no one who has been here for any length of time has questioned. Let it go.

Unlike the idiots attacking me, I have a grip. Oh, how admirable. Build the OP a statue. He has agreed to compile trading info on different securities for a message board. He deserves a presidential medal of honor...this isn't work. It is, as you said, a game.

Yes, it is a game started by someone else many years ago. I just volunteered to help them out with their idea.
The rules have been posted for over a year and it is unfortunate you didn’t notice them until now, but I am not going back to update your portfolio after the fact. And telling me your picks will be paying a div in February, May, August and November 2016 doesn’t work either.
There are many others who have not had an issue with this approach.
Assuming Baley’s HALO pick goes on to come in first place, and you come in $3 behind him in total portfolio value, he will ‘win’, regardless of the fact that you ‘would’ have won if dividends were included.
There are currently 103 different choices amongst the 50+ participants, and I have neither the time nor the inclination to check every one of those every day to see if they split, declared a dividend, or were bought by some other entity.
If you don’t like the ‘silly’ rules, then don’t play. It really is that simple.
It isn't after the fact. It is ongoing. You have the charts. You can see this public data. It is available for everyone and it has been all year long. Notice shmotice you could see all along what dividends they paid. This exclusion is so silly. It really is simple that you can look at the info I have provided-whoever claims otherwise is lying-this is public info. It takes all of 1 minute. You have enough time to post a reply here that you won't take it into account, yet you claim you don't have the time necessary to factor it into the results. Very ironic. Well, it is just a message board silly contest over the internet, it's not real money. So it doesn't matter that much. But it is a fact that I am doing better than the posted results indicate. All anybody has to do to prove this to themselves is look at their charts on google finance with dividend updates. Whatever. It isn't worth arguing anymore. I will email you updates for dividends next year.

Play by the CURRENT rules, and forget the dividend issue. Else you are just being a troll..... and yes I am yelling at the neighbor's dol.. LOL, can't help myself

No skin in this game but had to chime in. Hopsin is way out of line, give it up. You are coming across very negatively here. In a " perfect world" you may be correct. This is not a perfect world...it is an online coin forum with a fun contest provided by the OP and the OP should be thanked. Let it go, move on and don't enter the 2016 fun casual contest.

I've always thought the rules were Jan 1 - Dec 31, with only public splits being in the game as an x factor the past few years since Wings took over.
Hops, your points are what we like to have as the side discussions outside of the couple easy things to track. Totally valid and appreciated for the conver, just not a factor of the tally for this game.
Good grief Hopsin, this contest is for fun and life is too short..
If Wings isn't using software or a website that can automatically keep track of Divs then I think Div stocks should be off the table. Divs are too big of a factor in these types of stocks, so there is no point in using them if they won't be included.

Baley's my hero!
I sucked. I chose a stock that got bought out (so it is no longer listed). I didn't care enough to try to equate things on it, so it was a huge loss on mine.
Note to self: Don't do those types of stocks in these types of contests anymore. Blah!
Thanks guys, I'll let ride for 2016 and see if it repeats good performance, falls somewhere in the middle, or regresses toward the mean and ends up losing next year..
.. although I remain optimistic for the long term (and overweighted in the RLP) and think the best days are still a few years into the future. (just like my gold and silver)

comrade win nxt year. You see...hahaha.

I would do something like
Long gilead sciences
Short tvix
Short xiv
Long kroger
Long cvs pharmacy
Long reynolds american
Long visa
Long lockheed martin
Long general dynamics
Long phillips 66
...

Did you not read the original post?
He explicitly said "You need to advise me when a split or dividend happens. "
The guy is doing this for fun, and on his own, and the rest of us are benefitting from what he is doing (by our enjoyment, our egos, or our greed to win an ASE).
Complaining like this just seems so petty (particularly when the complaint is about something that is addressed in the very first post)
Just my opinion......
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
For the 2016 investment contest, I really want to pick more than 4 individual securities/publicly traded commodities.

You should do that. Since it isn't the way you want, you should start your own with the parameters you want, right?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Thanks again to comrade wingsrule for all your time and effort!!!
On another note, thanks again Wingsrule for a fun year and the work that you've put into this.
Oh, and hey Baley - good show! It looks like you've got it in the bag!
I knew it would happen.
Hops, your points are what we like to have as the side discussions outside of the couple easy things to track. Totally valid and appreciated for the conver, just not a factor of the tally for this game.
If Wings isn't using software or a website that can automatically keep track of Divs then I think Div stocks should be off the table. Divs are too big of a factor in these types of stocks, so there is no point in using them if they won't be included.
HALO (Barndogs only stock) was the only $10 or less stock that did well. He almost made a double with this one stock!
Way to go Barndog!
My CLCT (Collector's Universe) sunk me....ugh.

Baley's my hero!
I sucked. I chose a stock that got bought out (so it is no longer listed). I didn't care enough to try to equate things on it, so it was a huge loss on mine.
Note to self: Don't do those types of stocks in these types of contests anymore. Blah!
