I'm at a coin show, and the dealer across the aisle is trying to convince me he has my Christmas present image I'm sooooooo tempted.

I'd pass only because the sticker price seems like moon-money for a VF error.
That's me though. Hope you're having fun at the show!

I never understood the allure of errors on classic U.S. coins. Modern errors are one thing, but pre-1900 errors
have always been white elephants to me. Imagine a double struck Bust dollar, or a brockage on a 1794 large
    cent. Ouch.

For that reason only, I would pass on this coin, at any price.

It sounds like you want somebody to convince you to buy it. If that's the case, you need to save your money for something that needs no convincing.

Just got home. Nothing - I kind of fell in love with it when I saw it, but as others pointed out, the lower grade, the moon money, and well... my wife reminding me it's Christmas time I gave it a pass. He mentioned it could be my Valentines Day present at the next show though lol.

We never really got to serious price, but I got the feeling he wasn't going under $1000. He kind of said he uses it to attract folks to his case, so it's set at moon money more as a conversation piece versus active inventory, and that it's something he likes in his own collection.

I'm a sucker for oddities, but... usually do my homework first, I was just kind of excited.

On a side-note, the show was good for me. Sold all my foreign silver and proof sets, several US key dates and errors/varieties, and gold, and was surprised folks were buying 4 days before Christmas. The bargain bin was busy and once again, the PCGS Proof69 DCAMs of mixed dates/denominations were moving briskly (at $8.00 each or 2/$15.00). Can't complain for only my 3rd show playing dealer.

My gut feeling was that $2,000 was way too high, but I can't honbestly say what a fair price is.

If you have to be 'convinced' to buy a coin, it's not for you. Furthermore, unless you're operating in TDN's end of the pond, I would not pay a strong premium for any coin under any circumstances right now.

That price is not totally out of line with what I have seen for early coppers having major errors.
However, these error coins are esoteric items, and someone who does not have some understanding of the early copper world probably should spend time learning about these coins, especially if $2K is viewed as a lot of money to spend on one coin. Getting one's money out of an item like this won't be easy.
As others have noted, if one has to talk ones self into buying a coin, it's smarter to take a step back and be more patient.

Me either really. Just a normal 1825 VF30 is only around $125-ish

    Heritage has:
    1825 1/2 C Half Cent--Double Struck, Second Strike 95% Off-Center Reverse--Fine 12 PCGS - Sold $862.50

    and

    1825 1/2 C --Double Struck, Edge Damaged--ANACS. AU50 Details - Sold $1,495.00

Then just normal off-center 1825's have gone anywhere from $700-$4,000.

We definitely would have needed to be under $1,000. If it were $500, I would have taken it home, even $750 and I might have been tempted - we'll see next coin show, but I really think he was aiming for $1500.

Just a really cool coin - Be curious what Fred/Mike/others would price something like that in their inventory for.

This would not be for me. I bought a half cent that was struck over a Talbot, Allum and Lee cent with visible undertype. That is a piece of history, an accident.

The price was fair as the double struck obverse is very dramatic...

You can't compare this price wise to an example which has a 95% off center second strike.

I think the piece is insanely cool, and I agree the asking price seems fair.

Half Cent major mechanical errors are
much rarer than Large Cents.....by far.

I'd like to say if that D/S Half Cent were
in my inventory, I would sell it for a bit
less, but I'm not sure I would or could,
depending on my cost for the piece.

    The price is not crazy by any means;

An argument could be made that it's
10-15% too high, but that argument
would only be valid if there's another
very similar item at that lower level
    for sale.....

Nice coin, dramatic, good portion of the
1st strike shows....(notice that the tag
says "FIRST strike Off Center", not the
usual SECOND strike off center description.

All I had was an iPad with me yesterday, I went back through the few pics I took, and this was the best of the obv - I don't have a usable one of the rev.

Personally, I found it much cooler than the 95% one on Heritage (not that that one wasn't cool in itself).

Thanks for the thoughts - I think I was a bit more excited I found it than needing anyone to talk me into it - I was reading the forum posts on the double struck bust half at the show and when I had a lull at my table, started asking folks what they had for error coins, and just found it captivating.

Had another local show today, and the owner of this coin, Brian, was there again.

I had a lot of you PM me asking for better pictures, so here you go. A few of you were interested if I didn't buy this, so if you want, PM me and I'll give you Brian's e-mail, you can go direct with him.

    She still captivates me though...

One more vote here for "looks fair at 2K". I'd happily pay 1500, and I don't even want it.

LOL - it had that same basic effect on me - it just calls your name.

I didn't end up buying it, but... if it speaks to you too much, let me know, I'll PM you the dealer's e-mail ;-)
