I never did business with him, but I know a lot of collectors did, and he will be missed.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I did not know Larry personally, but I bought this beautiful 1910 Barber dime from him about 7 years ago. Still in my possession. Sorry to hear of his passing.
At Baltimore dealers were discussing Larry's health and it was understood that his condition was critical. The news wasn't a surprise.

This is very sad news. At a coin show I am shy and don't often talk to dealers. He (and his then-partner, Mike) was an exception. I bought a lot of commemoratives and Mercury dimes from him. I will miss him.
I know I can be a 'richard', but at times like this....
It's NEVER easy to hear of the loss of someone who, well, let's face it......deep down we're all 'coin geeks/nerds'....so it is always particularly sad to see one 'of us' pass, ESPECIALLY with someone as well known as Larry (I never dealt with him, but heard nothing but good/positive things about him.....but, really, who isn't at least familiar with him???). I just hope he didn't have to suffer too greatly.
HOPEFULLY, someone will emerge to TRY to fill the rather large void left.
Anyone who knew Larry will miss him greatly. I can still remember him coming down to Houston, in the mid-90's to try and sell me the 01-S quarter in 67, that sold for over 250,000 in the Gardner sale in June(to Doug Kurz).
And I last saw him this summer, and we reminded each other of that event. " See, Larry said, it was a great coin you passed on."
Thoughts and prayers for his family. He made many friends, and we thank him for his expertise and help in building our collections.
Sorry to hear that. I think Larry started in the business in the early 1960's.....over 50 years. In the mid-1980's he occasionally represented me at major auctions on choice/gem seated material. And everything we bought ended up doing well. He knew his stuff. Any time I made it to a major convention a sit down chat with Larry was a must. One major deal Larry worked for me was acquiring the finest known 1866-s quarter in 1988. The coin was listed in Coin World at $14,500 and I knew the owner was desperate to sell it. Money was tight at that time for everyone. Even at that price the coin was a great deal....recall that it sold for around $46K back in Jim Halperin's 1980 Rare Coin Fund 1 auction (acquired by Halperin in 1977 for $5,000). I asked Larry to get the coin for me at the best price possible and we'd split that difference. He was able to work a decent amount off and saved me significant money. Another time Larry had 3 gem PCGS MS66 1840 halves. He sent some on approval for me to pick one. Over the years I probably purchased a couple dozen of major seated coins through Larry. A big loss to the hobby and a fine gentleman.
I bought a couple of commems from him raw when ANACS had just started doing their photo certificates. Paid reasonable Gem money. A Maine and a Hudson as I recall. Had them submitted to our hosts 10 years later, they both came back in 66 holders. Great guy.
Collector since adolescent days in the early 1960's. Mostly inactive now, but I enjoy coin periodicals and books and coin shows as health permits.
I'd known Larry for many years and never had a bad experience with him. He was always easy to talk to and friendly. At the recently concluded Baltimore show there was some discussion that he was not doing well, but one is never really prepared for this news. Condolences to his family.
Larry was a fine gentleman whom I dealt with since 1972. For most of that time, we bought and sold classic U.S. coins to each other. When he started handling modern coins in the late 1990’s or early 2000’s, I sold him quite a few PCGS MS70 $5 gold commems. He was a great negotiator, and when we could not agree on price, he would thank me for my time and effort. Many dealers, especially the old timers like myself, will miss him. He began his career in numismatics, full time, in 1959!
Very sorry to hear this. I never had the pleasure of knowing Larry personally, but I certainly knew of him. Safe to say he leaves behind an honorable legacy & will be missed by many friends.

My sincerest condolences to friends and family.
I thought I saw him at the Sept. Long Beach show and he appeared okay to me.
With his passing (and Gene Henry's) what's this world coming to???
