I picked up five new MS Nickels for the collection - some are upgrades - some are
MS dates I did not have - all are CAC - Nice stuff... a guy I'm mentoring on Dimes and
Nickels bought a fantastic 1885 in 64 CAC - looks 65+ all day long. I'm very pleased -
these are Christmas presents to myself !

Merry Christmas, guys. Some amazing coins on this page, as usual. Vern, your raw 09 O and the PC55 are both unreal. I love seeing that 55 every time it gets posted, not sure Ive ever seen the raw VF before but man it is nice (especially compared with the many ugly examples residing in TPG VF holders IMHO).
That 01 O in the ANACS holder ain't bad either!

Mike, Thanks for the kudos. I recently divided my collection into two runs. This took my pretty-much complete state (minus the expensive big 3) into a mid-grade-centric VF35 to XF40 grouping and a Fine to lower-end VF which I am now placing into the Raymond. For that lower-end Wayte Raymond set, of the 74 collectible issues, I have 56 collected. Out of those, 31 are in raw state. Of the 3rd party-collected, 13 are PCGS and 12 are NGC. 2 of those are CAC'd... an '05-O VF25 and an '09-O F12. Here are my notes:
Mike, Handsome assortment of dimes you have there! Do you simply fill up a plastic PCGS blue box or 5? when you collect or do you attempt to display in some way? like in a binder? I figure you have a constant battle keeping all your neat purchases organized!

up albums and seeing the collection unfold in front of me...

This is such a great thread. Tim, I'm down to 17 personally, with about 2 I really don't care for. I tend to cull the weak asap. The last handful will probably take me longer than the initial 56. Here are 2 new ones, one from Brian Greer and one from Darrell.
As far as those dates for me, I never really had much trouble locating them(having owned a few examples of each), but finding ones I was happy with is a different story.
As far as the little ones, they are wondering how long to Christmas again LOL.
Holy smokes!, Justin - those are wonderful, quality-looking halves! love'em both... that is the exact quality I hope to get out of my remaining quarters. I am now deciding whether to break into or crack out holders or hold out for raw examples (which would take more time). Vern estimated, if he was to repeat his feat today, he would need to crack out about 50% of holdered coins to fill his album. I am sitting at 45%. In Vern's case, considering the early '90's timeframe he worked within, he was able to suck in all but the '01-S into his holder. Today, the expense would be such that the "retain in holder" option would also have to include the '96-S, '97-S, '09-O, and '13-S. That would be five coins to "fake in" in order to retain those five in holders. Right now, for any CAC'd coin I have, I would probably avoid a crack-out. What do you think? Justin... for halves, are you finding you are under the same decision difficulties? or do you have no problem cracking out holders? or perhaps you are going more of Mike's route of 3 Ring binders with holders showcased?

In the low-end (F/VF) set, that is where I am having the coin crack-out conundrum. I am really going after Vern's look but I have seven pages vs. one board like he has. Regarding my other run, the XF-40 centric set, I will follow your lead and ensure our hosts have graded the raw ones as well. You have given me some good direction. Thanks! ps. I have finished loading the Wayte Raymond set with the 31 raw examples. I have not yet cracked out the 13 PCGS coins or the 12 NGC coins. Similar to Justin's situation, I am at 18 left to obtain - looking for raw specimens whether to be converted or not. Here is how it looks so far:

I started doing crack-outs a while ago, but gave up on the idea. I buy them in whatever holder or no holder, but they end up in PCGS tombs. I've never been one to keep coins for an extended period of time, so selling is real for me. Like it or not, a slabbed coin is worth more than one without. Most people like the security of it, or insurance, but regardless it does add value (maybe not to seasoned collectors but most casual ones). And as someone who is going to sell down the road, I don't want to lose that value.
As for display, I visit them every so often at the bank. Usually when a new coin is added to the herd. It's a sad existence, but I find it gives me peace.
I also had the bright notion of cracking out all my VF/XF Halves for the Dansco album,
but my friend, Dr. Peter Shireman advised against it. They loose their liquidity when
raw. I agreed - and have keep 99% of my TPG coins entombed.
My photographer mentioned that all the Proof Dimes have triplicate images - so -

There sure seems to be a creative art in taking quality pictures. To get a nice registry album like Darrell sent me a link to requires good, originating pictures therefore a good set-up... I wonder... Jeff, regarding the dimes Mike is showcasing, what is your method or do you have experience with proofs? I am thinking the set-up might be roughly the same as business strikes but handling the lighting would be different. I have recently been looking into digital cameras like Nikon or a Canon like (I think) Jeff uses. Prices tend to run north of $400-$500. Then I think you need a macro lens, enough megapixel strength within the camera, and a rigid structure like a copy stand so it is not woggling when the picture is snapped... also an appropriate lamp light (or 2) with some level of opaque shielding to reduce glare. Of course, I do not mention all this from experience but it seems logical to me and I have alot to learn in this area. I read in places that a good megapixel cellphone camera can work but I don't believe that is the case.

I'd certainly love to have all of the barber halves in my Whitman album with the look of Justin's 09-s , I just don't see it happening for me. Some maybe. A goodly number, but not all.
These are the two I mentioned that I held back from grading (assuming they would) to build this set around. They are higher grade than my target but complimentary.
The 01-s that Mike seems to like and the 97-o.
Mike - Nice proof dimes, and an interesting study in the way coin pictures may be presented. Personally, I like to try to get the picture to look as much like the coin in hand as possible.
Tim - If you already have any digital camera that has macro capabitlity, I'd suggest getting a desktop tripod, an inexpensive gooseneck lamp, and take a bunch of pictures of coins before laying out any big money.
Dennis - You certainly kept a couple of toughies back as the anchor for your set.
Looks like Brad is trying to get his 96-O plused again. I suppose PCGS is very happy with him. He is definitely not worried about submitting coins multiple times. Unfortunately I guess that is what it takes to get a plus grade.
Does anyone know of a Barber Half grading 58+ the 1st time it was submitted(IE Raw)? I think Jeff accomplished that with the 07-O I traded with him for.

Vern, I like the look of your raw '06-O. I think I see some mumps on the neck there. Here are a couple of the '06-O's I have. If my memory serves me correctly, I have three and these two are in addition to what is in the Wayte Raymond holder:

Actually if the common belief is to send a coin raw vrs. in an NGC holder is true...that is surprising! I have crossed a couple of NGC 58's but have also had several AU's downgrade a notch. I have nailed 5 or 6 NGC grossly undergraded Barber 1/2's in the last year! VF-30 to XF 40, F-15 to VF25 or 30, as well as a couple VG10's-F12-15! Cracked and submitted to PCGS and they were not common dates!

I started doing crack-outs a while ago, but gave up on the idea. I buy them in whatever holder or no holder, but they end up in PCGS tombs. I've never been one to keep coins for an extended period of time, so selling is real for me. Like it or not, a slabbed coin is worth more than one without. Most people like the security of it, or insurance, but regardless it does add value (maybe not to seasoned collectors but most casual ones). And as someone who is going to sell down the road, I don't want to lose that value.
As for display, I visit them every so often at the bank. Usually when a new coin is added to the herd. It's a sad existence, but I find it gives me peace.
I also had the bright notion of cracking out all my VF/XF Halves for the Dansco album,
but my friend, Dr. Peter Shireman advised against it. They loose their liquidity when
raw. I agreed - and have keep 99% of my TPG coins entombed.
My photographer mentioned that all the Proof Dimes have triplicate images - so -

There sure seems to be a creative art in taking quality pictures. To get a nice registry album like Darrell sent me a link to requires good, originating pictures therefore a good set-up... I wonder... Jeff, regarding the dimes Mike is showcasing, what is your method or do you have experience with proofs? I am thinking the set-up might be roughly the same as business strikes but handling the lighting would be different. I have recently been looking into digital cameras like Nikon or a Canon like (I think) Jeff uses. Prices tend to run north of $400-$500. Then I think you need a macro lens, enough megapixel strength within the camera, and a rigid structure like a copy stand so it is not woggling when the picture is snapped... also an appropriate lamp light (or 2) with some level of opaque shielding to reduce glare. Of course, I do not mention all this from experience but it seems logical to me and I have alot to learn in this area. I read in places that a good megapixel cellphone camera can work but I don't believe that is the case.

I'd certainly love to have all of the barber halves in my Whitman album with the look of Justin's 09-s
, I just don't see it happening for me. Some maybe. A goodly number, but not all.
These are the two I mentioned that I held back from grading (assuming they would) to build this set around. They are higher grade than my target but complimentary.
The 01-s that Mike seems to like and the 97-o.
Mike - Nice proof dimes, and an interesting study in the way coin pictures may be presented. Personally, I like to try to get the picture to look as much like the coin in hand as possible.
Tim - If you already have any digital camera that has macro capabitlity, I'd suggest getting a desktop tripod, an inexpensive gooseneck lamp, and take a bunch of pictures of coins before laying out any big money.
Dennis - You certainly kept a couple of toughies back as the anchor for your set.

Looks like Brad is trying to get his 96-O plused again. I suppose PCGS is very happy with him. He is definitely not worried about submitting coins multiple times. Unfortunately I guess that is what it takes to get a plus grade.
Does anyone know of a Barber Half grading 58+ the 1st time it was submitted(IE Raw)? I think Jeff accomplished that with the 07-O I traded with him for.
Actually the 1907 O half that went 58+ crossed from a NGC 58 holder. When I was crossing my halves from NGC to PCGS (always at "any grade") Ihad many coins upgrade and only one or two downgrade. I know most believe that coins in NGC holders are overgraded, but my findings were quite different.
Sparky's Dad: The way the '01-S and '97-O looks really neat as placed within the blue holder! As Vern says, "icing on the cake" in addition to those beautiful coins.
Vern, I like the look of your raw '06-O. I think I see some mumps on the neck there. Here are a couple of the '06-O's I have. If my memory serves me correctly, I have three and these two are in addition to what is in the Wayte Raymond holder:

Actually if the common belief is to send a coin raw vrs. in an NGC holder is true...that is surprising! I have crossed a couple of NGC 58's but have also had several AU's downgrade a notch. I have nailed 5 or 6 NGC grossly undergraded Barber 1/2's in the last year! VF-30 to XF 40, F-15 to VF25 or 30, as well as a couple VG10's-F12-15! Cracked and submitted to PCGS and they were not common dates!
