BBCE Shrinkwrapped Run of Topps Baseball Wax Boxes 1975-1983

I am finally getting around to try and better organize my collection and thought I'd share some photos with the forum. Here's a run of Toppps baseball wax boxes from 1975 (mini) through 1983, all of which have been shrinkwrapped by BBCE. The 1978 and 1980 wax boxes were acquired back in 2006-2007, when we had group rips that consisted of full wax cases from each of those years. The 1978 wax box bears the old gold business card from back when BBCE was located on Fisher Street in Munster, IN. I am missing the 1976 box, and regret selling the one I did have many years ago. The 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983 boxes are all from sealed cases. The taller 1983 box is the Michigan variety.

Very nice run of boxes. Someone posted a within the last few days that BBCE would re-wrap the older BBCE sealed boxes in the new shrink wrap for $5 per box plus shipping.

Thanks~I saw that, but I'm fine with the shrinkwrap they're in. Kind of like the old school business card, too...the value for me is what's inside, not so much the cellophane, lol..

Justin, I just left. Won't be back for a few months, lol..

Thanks, Jeff! Next up, I've got to dig out some of the cello and rack boxes! image

Absolutely awesome, Tim... so envious of a 77 box from sealed case! That's the one product I wish I had more of... my hoard starts with 78. Always thought I'd have time to get more after filling in gaps, but looks like my priorities were outta whack in this market.

Thanks, guys, I appreciate all the kind comments.

Tom, I do have a couple of 78 OPC wax boxes of the Canadian version. image

One box I also truly regret selling about 10 years ago--a BBCE sealed 77 OPC wax box I bought direct from Steve for $300. I sold it for (I think) $450 and thought that was a strong price, lol..

Brad, the 77 wax box from a sealed case was also acquired via a group here here on CU a few years ago. I remember thinking at the time that 1K was pretty steep for a 77 box, but I went in on it anyway. Boy, I'm glad I did.

    Thanks again, fellas! image

Here are some pics of the cello box run, 1975 through 1983, also. This time, I do have a 76 box, but it is a partial box (2/3 full). 1976 unopened product is much tougher to find in all forms (wax, rack and cello) than 1975 or 1977, imo. Not pictured here is a regular-sized 75 cello box. The 75 cello box pictured here is the mini version, which featured a corrugated cardboard divider inside the box because of the smaller size of the packs. Unlike the mini wax boxes, which were smaller in size than their full-sized counterparts in 1975, Topps used the same sized cello box for both regular sized and mini cellos. Even with the cardboard divider, the mini packs slide around quite a bit in these boxes.

The 1981 through 1983 boxes were purchased via past group rips and are BBCE wrapped so I wasn't able to open the lids on those. image

Sure thing, Mark~you know as well as anyone how much I love those trays... image

Topps used two different wrapper variations in 1974. This was also the last year of this particular tray backing. Did anyone ever send away for the Exploding Battleship?

75, my favorite year from the 70s..

76 tray with 74 wrapper variation, which Topps reused that year. The way to tell if a tray is a 74 or a 76 is to check the cardboard tray backing which was different each year, and the pack price, which was 10c in 74.

79 wax tray box, complete with counter display carton, which is very tough to find.

Although technically not a wax tray, the one-year "wax rack" experiment employed by Topps in 1980 is one of my favorites, too.

You know Tim, by posting all of this, you're not making
the price of unopened any cheaper. Now everybody's
going to want the same stuff you've got.

This thread is right up my alley, you'll have me checking back regularly for some pics of racks! Love those trays too. If you ever get the urge to rip any of those minty fresh 79 trays, be sure to contact me... I can surely help you downgrade a handful of them to ones with small cracks in the cellophane. image

Thanks again, guys, I appreciate all the kind words!

Mark, I know you are bigger than Mike, but red-headed Italian guys can get pretty tough when they get wired up, too, LOL..

Brad, I have used that method to justify ripping wax trays back when you could pick up 79 trays for $35 all day long~I wish now I had been more forgiving, LOL!

Anyone else remember when Steve had 79 trays listed on his site for $35 seemingly forever?? No one even thought this stuff would ever go up more than a buck or two in price back then!

A couple more of my favorite boxes~the 78 is not BBCE wrapped but is an original and intact 78 wax box complete with a store owner's ad insert for Smooth-N-Juicy gum on top.

A limited edition produced by Topps from 1979 through 1981, the 79 super cellos are different from the 80 and 81 issues in that they are tightly wrapped like standard cello packs from that year.

Tim ... Miller's Ale House ... by the Mall ... 8:00 tonight. Bring all your boxes with you. Eric, Mike and I will help you unveil the contents of the packs. I will get there at 7:00 to reserve a table. I will also start drinking heavily ... that always helps to rip open the packs a bit faster!!!!

Keep them coming Tim!! Do you have a special place to display them at home, or do you have to keep them tucked away? One of my favorite aspects of these epic unopened collections (like your own), is seeing how people choose to display them. After all - these boxes were meant to be POS displays.

Thanks, Jeff! I have some in storage and some locked away~some of these pics were taken a while back, actually. I don't really have the room to display them in one area, but am going to try to organize or consolidate a few of the more vintage racks together.
