I just got another shipment back from BBCE. I finally got a non Xed out 85 football cello box. The 85 Topps baseball box has the no date wrappers. I asked Steve to mark that on the label. The 85 football wax box also has the no date wrappers but those seem to be more common that the baseball version. The Topps baseball cello box is an 83, 83 and 84 used the same box.

Would love to see a photo of the entire collection, or one for football and one for baseball. You put this together incredibly fast. Great work.

I'll post pictures of the entire unopened collection in an hour or so. It will take that long to move the boxes so I can get good pictures.

As requested, here are a few pictures of the entire collection. If I counted right, there are 102 boxes total. Right now there are about 60 that are BBCE wrapped. The boxes were split up into groups so I could get them all in the pictures. In the 4th picture with the unwrapped baseball cello boxes there are two 1981 boxes, one 1982 box and the rest are later 80s boxes. I have sold around 40 to 50 boxes to help pay for the rest. All of the boxes I sold were BBCE wrapped. Enjoy.

Nice James. You are going to make me buy more 1980's boxes if you keep posting these and I really don't have any more room for them.

I feel the exact same way. I don't really have the room to properly display them, but that display is awesomeness. It's just like being transported back to my local card shop in 1989 (a great year to be a sports card collector or dealer - probably the pinnacle).

The boxes aren't displayed like the pictures show. Most are in the glass front cabinet that is shown earlier in this thread. The rest are in my closet. I have a couple antique barrister book cases that I have thought about displaying them in but right now I want to keep them out of sight as much as I can.

I just received another shipment from BBCE. Most of these boxes are ones I already had and sent for authentication. The 88-89 basketball box is a new addition to the collection. The football cello box is a 1982. I also picked up two 1981 Topps football cello boxes that will be sent to BBCE in the next load.

I have been out of town working a lot recently and haven't taken the time to post new additions to the collection. Most of these are boxes I have bought in the last 2 months. As you see, there are some that I have as many as 4 or 5 of.

I just received another load from BBCE. I had called Steve and asked him if he would wrap some of the cheap late 80's boxes so all of the boxes in my personal collection are BBCE wrapped. As of now I have a complete run of 1981 through 1989 Donruss and Fleer wax boxes that are BBCE wrapped. I will complete the Topps wax and cello and the Fleer cello runs next couple times I send boxes in. It took me a while to find the 1987 football cello box that wasn't an Xed out box.

Very nice. I've always liked the football cellos of the 80s... I feel you on how hard it is to find those (even some of the wax) without the X-out. Thanks for sharing.

I really like the 88-89 fleer basketball box. You don't really see a lot of those anymore.

I just received another shipment from BBCE. Just like last time, I added some late 80's junk boxes and asked Steve to shrink wrap them so they will fit into my collection.

Very cool. Do you have the space to display it all? Will make for an incredibly cool display. Better than any card shop I know of. Getting 1988 Donruss and Topps boxes wrapped shows your dedication!

Awesomeness. You might consider building or having someone build you a basic shelving display so you only have to stack a couple of boxes on each row (although I would not be worried about damage - they are stacked five tall inside cases, after all. I think the price would be pretty reasonable and it would look even more awesome to get everything all lined up. Thanks again for posting.

Love this thread. Jealous of your space. Once I get cleaned up a little more (a 2015 cost cutting focus) I'll share my humble card room too.

I dig seeing your newly wrapped additions.

    James,

Looks like you have been busyimage Congrats on the FB Cello run. I know you've been after those for a while. I love the display. Nice to see some basketball and hockey representation in there. Would love to get an 88 Fleer box sometime. Thanks for the update. I actually have all my unopened out of its usual storage (my son's closet) so I can take inventory. I will have to post an update too.

Edited to add: BTW, it is nice to see I am not the only one bugging Steve to wrap junk boxes. I thought me asking for him to wrap my 86 Topps BB wax boxes and 89 Pro Set II Boxes was the height of OCD, but seeing your 88 Donruss box wrapped trumps meimage

I just got another shipment back from BBCE. I had Steve add and wrap three "junk" Topps baseball boxes, 86 cello, 89 cello and 89 wax. There are still a couple late 80's boxes that I need wrapped but Steve doesn't have them in stock. I have unwrapped boxes that I may send in with my next shipment if BBCE doesn't have them in stock.

Terrific collection you are amassing. I love the 81 FB wax box. Very sharp looking box and a non X-out to boot. Congrats!

I just received a few more boxes back from BBCE. There aren't many boxes this time but it represents a collection milestone for me. The 1986 Topps football cello box was the last box I needed to finish the collection I originally started. My original goal was all 1980-89 Topps wax and cello boxes for baseball and football, all 1981 Fleer wax and cello baseball and all 1981 Donruss baseball wax. All but 3 boxes are BBCE wrapped but I sent in another load a couple days ago. I have added a few other boxes to the list and will probably continue to add more. I am out of town working but when Iget back I'll take pictures of each completed group and post them if anyone would list to see the completed collection.

I received another shipment from BBCE a few days ago. I still need one BBCE wrapped box to complete my 80's collection, 1986 Fleer cello. I have an unwrapped box that I'll send in with the next shipment. I am also posting pictures of each run for those that want to see.

    Awesome stuff, as always, James!

I think you're spot on about 1980 Topps Football cello boxes being the toughest to find... that's the one I am missing to complete my run.

I found putting together the football run really brought back some great memories to a period within the hobby I previously had little interest. So much so that I put together a baseball run (Topps/Donruss/Fleer/UD) as well, but only wax boxes... I'm not chasing the cellos for baseball. Heck, I still can't believe I sullied my previously 100% football collection with baseball! image

I was able to identify all of the basketball boxes with a little (ok, complete) help from eBay... except the yellow box. What year is that one?

With the 1978 Topps Football box, can we assume you are on the hunt for 1979?

    Snorto~

  • jfkheatjfkheat Posts: 2,743 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks for all the nice comments. The two Topps basketball boxes are 1978-79 and 1979-80. I won't get the 1980-81 box. I will probably end up with a 1979 football box and may try for the 1978 and 1979 baseball wax and cello boxes. The 1980 football cello box I bought is the only complete box that I have seen on Ebay in the last 18 months. There was a "brick" of 24 packs that a member here bought. I picked up another box several months ago but the actual box is wrong.

    Thanks again for the comments.

Steve (slum22), I have enjoyed our PMs and getting to know you as well. I appreciate the help with the boxes that I got from you. You have a very nice collection that I'm sure we all would like to see pictures of when you get time.

Galaxy27, WAY too much info. lol. The 79 football box will be a tough one to find.

ReggieCleveland, I haven't decided where to go next with my collection. I have never really been interested in the unopened Canadian stuff. I have been thinking about trying a small PSA graded set. I may try the 1954 Red Heart Dog Food set. The Mantle in that set is one of my favorite cards.

Beautiful collection. I am working on an 80s run myself. I got some stuff in today from bbce, lower end stuff, but it wasn't wrapped. I thought they did it to everything. I was bummed. But still excited.

Although the collection I originally started is complete I am still buying boxes. I just received another shipment from BBCE. The 86 Fleer baseball cello box is the last box I neded to get BBCE wrapped to finish the collection. The 84 football wax box is the one I just got from forum member Ken Cope. It replaces the only Xed out box that I had in my personal collection.

I am currently out of town working. Before I left home I sent BBCE a few boxes and had some sellers ship boxes there instead of sending them to me. Steve finished looking at the boxes a few days ago and I had him ship them to where I am working.

Here are pictures of what I received today. I was very happy to get the 1980 Topps football cello box. This is the toughest 80s football box to locate. This box is in very nice condition. The last two or three 1984 football wax boxes I bought had resealed packs. I was glad to see that this one was good and it is a very nice non Xed out box. The 1981-82 Topps basketball box is the MidWest region. I am hoping to find East and West region boxes to complete the run.
