1980-89 Unopened Box Collection UPDATED 9/3/15

I know a lot of guys here collect unopened boxes. I am working on the 1980-1989 Donruss wax, Fleer wax and cello and Topps wax and cello in baseball and the Topps football wax and cello boxes in the same years. The Donruss and Fleer wax runs are complete. I only need the 1989 Fleer cello box to finish the Fleer cello run. I still need several Topps baseball wax and cello boxes. The Topps football wax run is complete but I need a few cello boxes. Here are pictures for anyone that would like to see them. Eventually all but the cheaper boxes will be BBCE authenticated and shrink wrapped.

That's an awesome run! Congrats and best of luck finishing it up. So, have you thought about how you are going to display them? They look great.

    Outstanding 80's collection!

When did you start putting these runs together?

Do you plan to swap out the 1983 Topps FB boxes with those in 1983 outer boxes?

I have been buying boxes in the group rips for the last few years. A few of these are from those group rips. All others were bought in the last 6 months or so except for the late 80s stuff. Most of those I have had since 1988 or 89.
I have another 83 football box that is in the correct 83 box on the way back from BBCE now. It seems that there about as many in the 81 box as there are in the 83 box. Topps must have printed a huge amount of 1981 baseball and football boxes that didn't get used in 81. I've seen the 1981 boxes used as late as 1985 for baseball. I don't recall any football boxes later than 1983 that used the 1981 box but it may have happened.

James, Nice runs of boxes! As far as Topps and those 81 football boxes, it appears they even used them for some of the 1985 cards. In fact there is one on ebay as an example. I'm surprised that they had such a box overrun and that they kept them for that long, eventually using some with a sticker or glued on label that says "1985 - .35"

    Thanks for the compliments.
    Leftofdial,
I hadn't paid any attention to the 85 football in the 81 box until you mentioned it. There are actually 2 boxes currently on Ebay like that.
    Esquiresports,
I hadn't really thought about displaying the boxes. Most of the boxes are currently in the top of a computer desk behind the glass doors. The later 80s boxes are in my card closet. I do have a 60s-70s book case with glass doors that I could put them in. I'll have to give that some thought.

Great run of boxes...thanks for sharing the pics! My personal favorite is the 1986 Topps Football box you have. That is getting to be one tough box...killer design and a loaded year for rookies and stars. Keep up the good work!

Work with the space you have. Stacked up looks pretty nice. Maybe change out some of the bubble glass for clear glass. Just a few bucks. While I don't have the space for it right now (I "wasted" a huge wall with different factory sets instead of wax), those boxes are mostly more nostalgic to me than most sets. Can someone get me a fifth wall? Hah! Congrats again on the great collection and best prices when finishing it.

Indeed and nary an X-out to be seen (aside from the 84T FB)... not even on some boxes that are pretty hard to find clean given football wasn't nearly as hoarded or popular as baseball.

I just received 3 more boxes from BBCE and thought I would share. The 83 football wax box will replace the one I had that is in the 81 box. I also added pictures of some football cello boxes that I have. I am sending another load to BBCE today.

I think you're missing the point of collecting those boxes silly. But seriously, that's a really nice looking set of FB boxes, seeing as how you have to figure they're a lot harder to come by (I would think) than the BB ones.

Some years of the football cellos seem to be readily available. The 1986 cello boxes are pretty scarce. I think it will be the toughest one to find. I have been concentrating more on football boxes for right now so I only have 3 or 4 Topps baseball cello boxes.

Here are some updated pictures as requested. I will sell most of the duplicated to help pay for boxes I need to complete the collection. The cheaper late 80's boxes are in my closet. There is not enough room in this case for those boxes.

Dang! That's a bigger unopened collection than most card shops had back in the day.

Is there a particular motivation for having multiples of certain boxes, like investment or a certain number of children you'd like to pass them on to?

I just received another shipment from BBCE. I was happy to the the 1980 baseball wax box and have it authenticated. I still need an 80 baseball cello box. With the prices going through the roof on the 80 baseball boxes It may be one that I won't be able to get.

Esquiresports, Sorry I missed your question the last time. Sometimes I pick up extra boxes to resell to help pay for the ones I need for my personal collection. Most of these boxes are for my collection.

That is the prettiest 1980 baseball box I have ever seen. Even straight from a case they don't typically look nearly that nice (in my experience).

I see, very nice. I'm guessing you get them to Steve pretty quick so you can still file a claim with eBay if they come back bad? Pretty good idea, never really wanted to risk it with some of the stuff I see on eBay, but there's not much to lose there. And I bet you have a good list of sources that are fairly trustworthy.

Awesome... keep it up, and keep the pics coming. I love seeing this stuff!

I just received another package from BBCE with boxes I sent in for authentication. I finally had a bad box. I had a seller ship some boxes directly to BBCE for authentication. An 85 Topps baseball box has a couple packs with loose seals and 4 or 5 packs that look like they may have been resealed. I bought the 89 Topps football box from BBCE to complete my BBCE sealed 1980-89 football wax box run. The only Xed out box is the 84 box but I have a clean full box on the way to me. I have other 80-89 box runs but this is the only one that has all BBCE sealed boxes.

    James,

Great collection. I love the run of non X-out FB boxes. Those are very tough to get compared to baseball. Thanks for the photo update. I will be doing an update too soon, including some of the great 80's FB wax boxes you sent my way.

I sent another load to BBCE for authentication a few weeks ago. I got them back about two weeks ago. Today I had a very good mail day. I got a 1980 baseball wax box back from BBCE and a 1980 Cello box that I bought from a member here, slum22. The 1980 cello box completes my 1980s Topps, Donruss and Fleer wax and cello box baseball run. I still need two Topps football cello boxes to finish the football run. I still have a few boxes that I want to get BBCE wrapped. I'll probably send another load in in the next week or so. Now I need to figure out what to start on next.
    James

Edit to add: I sent a 1984 football wax box in with the other boxes a few weeks ago. It was a non Xed out box that I bought to replace the Xed out one in my collection. Steve didn't like the look of the packs and wouldn't authenticate it. I returned it to the seller for a refund. If that box shows up on Ebay again I will post it on the board so someone here doesn't buy it.

    James,

You are putting together an awesome unopened collection. It has been great getting to know you via PM and trading notes on unopened. I hated to part with my 80 cello box, but I am glad it went to a great collector and collection.

Nice pickups! 1980 is a cool year for cello boxes, too, as Topps made two kinds of cello packs that year--one was the very loosely wrapped variation and the other was the tight wraps like you see on typical 70s cello packs. They actually did this for a three year run from 1980 through 1982, before switching solely to the loose wrap in 1983.

    Steve,
Thank you for the kind words and for letting the box go.

    Tim,
I didn't know that about the cello packs. I guess I never really paid that much attention to the way they were wrapped. Thanks for that info.
