1813 CBH - Grade opinions sought ***GRADE POSTED***

I'm split between two numbers right now. Before I label the 2x2 with some generous grade, I'd like to hear experts' opinions.

I'm in the nice original 35 camp but wouldn't be surprised if our hosts graded it a 30. They are tough on the Bust Halves.

Yours is better than my PCGS 35 so I think it may 40 with ease

And you only paid 250 for it? Thats less than I paid for this

It looks like it has a rim ding at 12 o'clock (obverse) to me. I'd like to see a closeup of that area. If it is severe enough that could keep it out of a graded slab. I give it a 35 overall.

I'm seeing a slightly knocked around 40...if it was mine, I'd want it to go 35.

That's probably just an edge lettering flaw. Pretty common.

Lance is right, it's actually the the 'E' in "CENTS" rolled unevenly onto the edge. I've noticed that 1813 is very often found with edge lettering issues, more than any other date in the series, IMO.

Thanks everyone for the input! I was actually split between 40/45, but I usually tack on an extra point for owning it... I mean, doesn't everybody? image

I'm in the 30 or 35 camp, as the obverse I think will hold it back, and that assumes the mark by the mouth is natural wear. If it is damaged, then it only grades for its details. I'm guessing it is not damaged by your lack of mention of it.

There is an 1813 in pcgs 35 for sale over at JJ Tea Party right now that might be of interest from a comparison standpoint.

Not sure if you checked out the price over at JJ, but it is certain to make you feel a lot better.

Alrighty, here are some new images. The coin will go out to PCGS later this week, where I'd be surprised if it got anything less than XF40.

If anyone would like to change their "guess" before I get the results, now is your chance. Thanks everyone who gave their opinion in this thread's first run. image

Honestly, I see too much wear on the obverse to call this a full EF-40 (or better) coin. The reverse is a bit stronger.

I grade coins by asking myself: 'Would I buy that coin in grade XX?'

If it comes back a 40 I would not be a buyer. If it comes back a 35, I would be a buyer. (not that I necessarily do/don't want to buy that coin)

    Hi all - Just recently got around to submitting this one. Here's the result;

I think this grade is pretty outrageous. The coin is as nice as any 40 I've ever handled. Needless to say, it will be cracked-out immediately upon receipt.

Well, I'll say my initial reaction was 30, but after scrolling down the comments and looking at the coin again, I changed my opinion to 35. I do think that it is very wholesome and has an almost perfect overall look. I just think the graders see that wing detail weakness and go sub 40, regardless of date or variety.

When I looked at the obverse picture my first impression was VF35 the reverse looked XF40. I think 35 would fit, but 30 is a bit harsh.

If the luster is strong it is a 40, if not there at all, probably a 35. It has alot of meat and originality for either grade.

    I figured 35 and was ready to accept 40. I don't see it as a 30.

I like undergraded coins in my collection.

    On the flip side :

If the grade doesn't fit, you must re-submit.
Sold as a collectible. Slabbed as a treasure.
    Ownership adds 10 point spreads.
And that's how bookies make their living.

It should never be an EF-40, but a VF-35 is definitely more appropriate.

30 or 35 were the most logical choices. It shouldn't be a 40 with that lower left obverse wear/strike combo. And even VF30's can have significant luster.

Next time in it could just as easily go 35.

Too much wear for an XF. Does anyone have a statistical breakdown of PCGS grades of similar Bust halves at each of the grades?
  • Options
    BustHalfBrianBustHalfBrian Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭
Thanks for the comments, all. I think I'll show the coin to a few Bust dealers at Long Beach and see what they think. Now seeing the coin in the PCGS holder, I feel the same as I did when it was raw; it just has that meaty, XF feel.

Also, I noticed shortly before submitting this coin that it was struck with rotated dies (I didn't notice when I bought it). Does this error add any value or just intrigue? I know errors were a more common occurrence during this era, but I also know that some rotated die errors can carrier hefty premiums on some coins.

    But 35 would be fair

Brit standards: good Fine. Just for fun you should look at a Baldwin sales list (www.baldwin.sh) and look at the half crowns.

But I was guessing very fine. So "30" doesn't surprise.
