It's only contest strategy. In playing, you don't necessarily reveal your true investments, if any.

or a 3X ETF. . . if you choose the correct price direction. >>
And that direction needs to continue over the life of the contest, or the laws of mathematics takes hold. Suppose the underlying asset starts at 100 and goes UP and DOWN 10% every month with the asset ending the year right where it started--100. If X was the price of the etf on Jan 1, what will be its price on Dec 31?
Well, the trick is to report (usually after those big moves in both directions) that you just happened to be on the right side of the trade and made even more profit
No, the whole point of this kind of thread is, it's a one-year race, beginning and ending values. Very entertaining and educational to watch the movements over the months, though.
It's a large enough sample to have statistical significance, as the wonderful bell curves throughout the previous 2 years well attest.
As ever Wingsrule, thanks for the effort expenditure in tracking these... it might be interesting to update the 2012 and 2013 picks performance since, if you get any spare time and interest...
Some of the picks dip to the bottom of the standings through the year (to give people a chance to get on board) before finishing strong in the longer term
I think the calculations for my numbers might be a little off, is anyone else seeing this with theirs as well? According to this post I am only up 1.11% on the YTD as of 3/7/14.
My investment was $6,000 in MAUXF and $3,000 in Z
My MAUXF cost basis is $1.14 per share. At the close of 3/7 share price was at $1.265 per share, for a gain of 10.96% My Z cost basis is $81.73. At the close of 3/7 share price was $82.03 per share, for a gain of 0.37%
Average YTD = (2/3)(10.96%) + (1/3)(0.37%) = 7.43%
Buy the dips and when there's blood is in the street, isn't that what we always say here. My favorite type of longs....we'll see how much profit taking this spurs.

FYI - I follow CDTI. Today's news is basically bogus. CDTI said Honda was adding the TLX to their cars that use CDTI's products. Sounds great right? Well the TLX line is replacing the TSX line which has CDTI's product in it. So the net effect is nothing. No new revenue. Should a stock double on your customer renaming an existing product? The headline could have easily said "CDTI loses TSX line" instead of the "CDTI gains TLX line"
Just sayin. That doesn't mean the stock can't double again. It has been a wild ride for this company over the years.

I had no clue on it with this angle, was thinking it could go to 3 for the contest honestly. But I'll take it.
no shares available to short. I would have at $6 if they were available. It hit $4.02 this morning already
this company is notorious for this type of stuff. Look at their long term chart. Over $100, under $2. Stock sales to raise capital, reverse stock splits, never a profit in their entire history, egregious salaries to insiders, 6 CEOs in last few years, the past CFO blew the whistle on some shady accounting was fired and is now suing. Aside from that, it's a great company and business model

Ha, thanks for the insight!
Like I said, I was looking at it to range play it to 3 for the contest. If it drops it drops, but I'll take the bump for the contest.
While I updated the closing prices correctly, I did not transfer your new weekly total before I sorted them by amount. If you notice, you also had $9,100 in your portfolio during the previous update. Fixed below, and you moved up 12 spots with a 7.33% YTD return.
Thanks for pointing it out and I apologize for the confusion.
No problem, thanks for looking into it and all the work you do on this! I'm hoping to move up a couple more slots the next time an update comes out. Good week for Z and MAUXF.
Four contestants are now in the "Double" club. I beleive Dr. Buster's total is the highest ever recorded since the contest began a few years ago. Also note pragmaticgoat and roadrunner have the same pick (NUGT), which I did not notice during the initial setup. Can't change it now...

Pragmaticgoat picked it first so he will get all the glory for whatever NUGT does in 2014. I'm just a bystander more interested in results than glory. After the 2013 epic washout....how could 2014 not be better? I should have chosen JNUG but it really didn't cross my mind at the time....JNUG is about 14% ahead of NUGT.

that's why these contests are not "real". You can't buy 75,000 shares of a 12c stock without yourself moving it to 20c

You should be up about 70% at end of contest.

At the close of 3/7 share price was at $1.265 per share, for a gain of 10.96%
My Z cost basis is $81.73. At the close of 3/7 share price was $82.03 per share, for a gain of 0.37%
Average YTD = (2/3)(10.96%) + (1/3)(0.37%) = 7.43%
Did I do that correctly?

But I'll take it.
this company is notorious for this type of stuff.
<< <i>no shares available to short. I would have at $6 if they were available. It hit $4.02 this morning already

Ha, thanks for the insight!
Like I said, I was looking at it to range play it to 3 for the contest. If it drops it drops, but I'll take the bump for the contest.
I knew it would happen.
