Pan Pac gold. Let's see it!

Ex Mark Feld. Placeholding in my Box of 20 until I've got the scratch for a $50 octy:

<< <i>Great series and great looking coins. Of all US coins, the obverse of the $2 1/2 Pan Pac is my favorite design. >>
It is interesting that the "plodding," "untalented" and "hidebound" Charles Barber designed that coin. Although a fair number of Barber's design were pedestrian (Sorry Barber fans, but the Barber dime, quarter and half dollar are visually sleep inducing.) he had a much better sense of what was needed in commercial channels than St. Gaudens and his support staff.
To me Barber gets a bad rap. He took the St. Gaudens High Relief design which was beautiful but totally impractical and made it into an attractive coin that could be mass produced and practical in commerce. He did the same for the $10 Indian gold piece. Yes, Barber was out to preserve his job and his power as are most people who hold a position, and why is that unique or unusual?
<< <i>Coinsarefun - What is up with your slab? Your one dollar is labeled a $2.50 piece. Nobody has mentioned it yet. >>
Yeah, it was a slab error. I sent it in raw years ago but left the mistake as it was kind of neat.
Sold the coin some time back though

I have always liked those fair related jewelry items. The trouble is they usually go for more money at auction than I am willing to pay for them. Some 1903 St. Louis World's Fair pieces are quite neat, especially the spoons.
The authority on the St. Louis items items was a gentleman named Hendershot, who was the first president of FUN. The first winter FUN show had a 20 to 30 table bourse. Mr. Hendershot lived to be 106 years old. He addressed the 50th FUN anniversary dinner via closed circuit TV.
