^ Same, but the "filthy" is really disgusting. I think musicians who play on strings, or horns, or mechanics who work with tools will all tell you, they love their trade, but the drawbacks are usually stinky hands after handing metal. While most of us know NOT to clean coins, nearly all of us understand the need to clean hands . Some things about the study really stinks. Literally. Usually my hands when "searching" or studying suffer this indignity. The handling is the dirtiest part of a hoard.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I love numismatics. For most of my life, the study of coins and the history and people behind them has fascinated me. Using my library and experience to research something and gain a detailed understanding of it is something I find immensely enjoyable. The joy is in the journey, as they say.
Another aspect is communicating with others who share a passion for numismatics. People have different experiences and often valuable insights that enhance my understanding and enjoyment. And when my knowledge can help someone else, that's a great feeling.
Researching, seeking out, and finding a special coin is a wondrous feeling. Getting to do that to bring joy to other collectors while paying the bills...What could be better?!
Been collecting as far back as I can remember, 1960's its a hobby for kings and the king of hobbies. Love the hunt and chasing the coins, researching the different types. Always learning something new, meeting new people. But the best part is SHARING what you know with others! I think thats where the most enjoyment comes from.
Don`t you mean LUV? The other word is reserved for family and special friends... Not my trade but I do LUV numismatics and funny thing is every person I have dealt with that are in the trade I can tell they sincerely LUV it as well...

IMO love doesn't apply to my hobby.
Like a lot does.

I do like the hobby and the pretty round pieces of metal.
I've found that sometimes turning your interests or passions into work, will quickly diminish their appeal.
Some can keep the passion after this transition, and I'm jealous of them.

<< <i>All true, but when I saw the reference to cleaning hands I immediately thought of mustard
Invent mustard that polishes slabs!
"pastrami or scratched slab - we got your back"
