....when your opportunities to upgrade your chosen series become few and far? Although a few upgrades present themselves they simply don't have the eye appeal I prefer. So I haven't made any NP for my collection in quite a while. What do you do?
What we've got here is failure to communicate.....

Sorry, but I've seen some coins in top-pop registry sets that look like they've been recovered from a septic tank. No thanks. I'll take a nice eye appealing MS63 over a sewer-grade MS66 any day.
I'm kind of in the same boat with my Buffalo Nickels. What you have to do is find another series to start on. I chose vintage coin boards. They're cheap and a lot of fun to pursue.
I am sure I will see more that upgraded.
It might be the best way to upgrade your set.
Panther: Did it matter that much when you got close to MS67+ money for your MS67 coins anyway? I was an underbidder on the 47-D (and I believe the 51-S) and had to stop when I got outbid at a price closing in on MS67+ money. You did it right in the first place by having many premium quality coins. The bidders saw the quality!

Panther's 47-D sold at Heritage at $2,350 (for an MS67!). Last sale before that on a typical MS67 coin of that date $188 at Heritage. I bought my pop 1 MS67+ 1947-D for under $3,000. Now it is pop 2 due to Panther's coin upgrading. After a grading fee, the owner has close to $2,500 in the new coin. Since there is an MS68 of that date already, how much more than $2,500 - $3,000 can the undergrade MS67+ coins be worth now as a pop 2? Panther you got nearly all the money to start with on your lovely MS67 specimen!
As always, just my 2 cents
I've reached that point with my type set. Yes, there are better coins out there that could give me some up-grades, but what's the point? The upgrade prices are really high, and I would rather expand my interests. I still love the set and have in intention of selling it.
The cool thing about my collection is it is impossible to complete my set.
This means that I am always on the hunt.
The really cool thing about my collection is that I find super cool stuff all the time that I didn't even know existed the day before ........;
<< <i>There are many great coins out there... no need to restrict your collecting to one series.... Cheers, RickO >>
Edit to add: Doesn't mean that I'm not willing to buy a dupe, though.

Mitch,
The 47-D did go for MS-67+ money and I was very happy. There were a couple more that went for well over price guide. And who knows if they will upgrade.
The 51-S sold for $470.00 and the dealer that bought it had it upgrade MS-67+ and is for sale for $2275.00
The 62-D sold for well over price guide at $1292.00 and upgraded for the new owner MS-66+ and priced guide at $2500.00
Overall it all balanced out and I am happy with the results of the sale.
The reason for my post was to tell Bob he might be able to upgrade his set by just submitting his own Quarters for upgrades. I knew that I had a few that would upgrade but opted to sell them as is.

<< <i>Panther. I chased the 62d as well. Again at $1350 with upgrade fees that is pretty heavy as that $2500 price guide was for a pop 1 coin which it is not now. I think I chased a 51s that fetched around $1500 in ms66. I guess that was not your coin. Wondercoin >>
The 51-S that went for $1500.00 had enhanced pictures. I learn a big lesson buying coins that the pictures have been enhanced.
The 53-S went for a lot and I think it had a great chance to upgrade.
And thought the 62-D had a chance at 67.
