A good deal if they were Canadian silver dollars, go back and see if he will sell you more for their true value.

You paid for their numismatic value, not their BV ... that's how it sounds anyway

Huh? Grade always matters when money is involved, unless it's bullion. But as I mentioned before, it sounds like he paid for the numismatic value not the BV so a high grade would explain the dealer's high price.
