Went to visit my mom and step dad this weekend. My step dad had a small collection of coins left to him from his grandfather which he asked me to look at. Most were common stuff but there were a few very nice pieces, especially some original Seated Dimes in XF-AU with a couple of scarce varieties (1842-O F-103 was my favorite). When I get to the end I find this 1860 $2.5 old reverse in AU condition, caked in dirt and fully original laying in the box. It's heading to PCGS tomorrow. Care to guess the grade?...
Coin graded AU58!

The 60-P Old Reverse is a very tough coin!

'dude
It does not appear that the coin has any luster remaining, and there is a moderate amount of wear.

I believe you are mistaken.
AU-50+ or AU53.
I like it. Just dirty enough, without being TOO dirty.
<< <i>Is it in a Geni? >>
Huh?

Can we see the dimes too?
<< <i>I'm going to venture AU50. I don't own any of that type but if I did I would be very happy with a coin like that!

I didn't take them with me, just the 1860 to have graded. The 42-O was an XF40 with deep blue and grey color. Definetly an untouched example.

After looking at the coin on multiple occasions, I believe the coin was cleaned not too long ago.
(Edited to change from "Cleaned long ago" to "Cleaned not too long ago.")

<< <i>Something did not look 'right' about this coin. After looking at it multiple times, why is there a pupil on the eye? If I am not mistaken, the eye is smooth on these coins. But...correct me if I am wrong. >>
Not a pupil, a tiny contact mark. If its cleaned I'm selling my gold collection in shame. It's very original.

Sounds like Aaron Rodgers placing his salary on Ryan Braun.

You can see the harsh cleaning marks in the fields edging up to the devices and denticles.

...guess I can pick them better than Aaron Rogers. Also very glad to be able to keep my gold collection, coin graded AU58

<< <i>Glad it graded. >>
Thanks, I only graded it a 53 to 55. 58 is a surprise.

The coin is another matter and probably looks awesome in person. I hate judging coin photos.
Show us the slab whenever it comes in.

Cannot believe it's a 58. Too bad.

This is an example where the discussion of the grade derails a great story about an interesting, attractive, and scarce coin.

It looks more like dirty old gold in the True View image. Of course, images is what they are expert at so I would expect this. Nice coin.

I agree, but the OP photo is well above average.
Nice coin!

I did not suggest your picture is bad- it is better than what i am capable of doing.
The true view picture would likely change the minds of some that offered a grading opinion
