  • Nice looking pack.

BTW any of you pick up that GAI 60 5 cent pack this afternoon with banks showing. Hammer at $860 I think. My snipe was low.

Thanks, guys! Robert, I don't rip often but when I do, I can't stop. last time I did this I tore through a full box of 75 mini wax and a 78 Topps baseball wax box.

Wound up ripping two 75 mini packs after all, as they are mini, after all. image

Pack 1: Some nice cards including a sharp Carbo which is a tough card in Mint 9.

    image

Pack 2: Tougher centering in this pack, but the best card was a very sharp and well centered Fingers, which will pay for both packs if it grades out Mint 9.

    << <i>Thanks, George!

I just ripped the two '81 Topps wax packs I bought from ClockworkAngel via the board rip and pulled a few card saverable cards. I know david (ldferg) has a bead on the '81 set, so wondering if any here have any grading upside? The Yaz is really sharp; definitely subbing that one.

    >>

    Tim,
I would only submit the Yaz from the 81 packs.

    Thanks,

I'm really liking this 74 OPC set--the yellow back and thicker cardboard stock, they are more visually appealing than the Topps version, imo. GAI 7.5 pack yielded 9 cards plus team checklist. First the non card saverable cards. Was nice to pull a Mets team card, though centering was tough, which is a chronic issue on most of these.

Here's the Ryan--OC but not as bad as some of the others. I'm thinking NM 7 grade. Tom, any chance at an 8? There have been only 6 74 opc Ryans graded PSA 8 and a single 9. Back is nicely centered.

The Ike Brown is probably the best centered card in the pack--possibly (hopefully) a Mint 9 card. All the cards were really sharp and fresh out of the pack. I wish I could open a box of these!

The team checklists seem to command a nice premium in NM or higher grade and this Braves checkist is really nice, too.

I'm going to quit now while I'm still only relatively behind (lol), but this was a lot of fun!

    FYI,

This is a VERY difficult set!
This is hands down the most difficult 1970's opc baseball!
It will take you a long long time to complete a set of this in high grade

Thanks, Scott! I am an unopened collector first and foremost, but there's nothing that beats the rush of opening a vintage pack. And in doing so, you learn quite a bit on what to expect/look for when evaluating packs in general.

Tim - the Ryan is a 7, but I would grade all 3 either way. The checklist has one 8 and one 9, so that is gold either way.

I was pretty encouraged by the 74 OPC grades, too--I was hoping the Ryan would grade NM 7, but am content with the 6. The pair of Mint 9s was very pleasing for this very tough set!

Great grades! Less than a SINGLE BOX of 1974 OPC packs have ever been graded. You're a brave man to bust that. Then again, so few singles have ever been graded. I am the most bullish on this OPC set - even more so than 1971. I think we (aside from maybe you, Tom and Mike) are just beginning to really understand how scarce these cards are.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

Thanks, guys! I thought it would be interesting to bump these rip threads with the final results, sort of like coming full circle, if you will.

Scott, the 74 OPCs are brutal, but I love opening those packs as much as any from the 1970s. I am going to very slowly put that set together, too, with as many self-submitted cards as possible, too.

Here are the 81 Topps grades for the cards scanned earlier in this thread--got one 10 (the highest pop, of course, lol), but PSA is tough on these. I still think the Yaz is a 10. These cards are not from the vending boxes I recently ripped. A number of those will be going in separately.

    22381078 MINT 9 1981 TOPPS 549 JERRY REMY Card
    22381079 MINT 9 1981 TOPPS 440 JERRY REUSS Card
    22381080 MINT 9 1981 TOPPS 110 CARL YASTRZEMSKI Card
22381081 GEM MINT 10 1981 TOPPS 472 DYAR MILLER Card

Thanks for sharing these rips and the grading results. It's always fun to see how cards do at PSA. I feel like you were robbed of a 7 on that '74 OPC Ryan though. That might be a crack & resub worthy card.

That 74 OPC Ryan is just too good to be in a PSA 6 holder.

I just can't enough of the OPC. The rough cuts and the bright colors are awesome in my opinion.

Yes, and for the time being they are ridiculously undervalued. However, threads like this will only help create awareness. All OPC is undervalued IMO, but all one has to do is look at the pop report of 1974 OPC to understand how that specific set is so ridiculously scarce

I have a large order in to PSA that includes about 10 HOF's from this set, inluding a really nice Winfield that has a chance at an 8 and a Thurman Munson that should at least be a 9.

And I recently picked this up....
