  • Tsalems I busted a box of 83 OPC a few weeks back. Anything apart from Ryan, Gwynn, Sandberg worth subbing? I did well with Winfield's, Rose, Bench etc

    Honestly, I dont think so

There are lots of 10's floating around from 83 OPC other than the 3 key cards.
I would check the pop report and see if any of the stars are low pops

Sweet fancy Moses. Mike is going to have heart palpitations when he sees this thread.

But I'm not! image Good luck with the '74, Tim!

This was actually the first time I've ever ripped a '74 opc wax pack and it was a lot of fun. Tough centering throughout but I did card saver a couple cards and will scan those. 9 cards in the pack plus team checklist which was a Mets team checklist, which was cool, lol..Here are the 6 that didn't make the cut..

  • Not seeing much gum bleed, I hear horror stories on 70's OPC gum going through 2-3 cards
  • tsalems1tsalems1 Posts: 3,455 ✭✭✭✭
I opened 2 of those packs, they are nice and no problems with the gum image

That issue plagues 72 opc wax especially, because of the thick sugary gum they used that year.

I did pull a couple of good cards from this pack, including a very nicely centered HOFer Tony Oliva.

Also pulled the #1 card in the set. AARON! Dang centering! But it's probably worth subbing for the possible 9OC...

    Agreed.

This is a great issue. Card stock is really nice and thick and love the yellow backs!

    LOL!

    Scans?

My scanner is down otherwise I would post scans. But here's an anticlimactic recap:

1 pack 1976 - nothing of note, brutal centering
1 pack 1977 - nothing of note, bad centering
    2 pack 1978 - Got a sharp Yount, but probably 75/25 L/R
2 pack 1979 - centering was atrocious, but I guess I can't complain. Pulled a Reggie Jackson, Yaz, Nolan Ryan, and Ozzie Smith rookie. The Smith is probably 95/5 L/R with a tilt, the Ryan is probably 80/20 L/R.

Still a lot of fun to pull pack fresh 70s OPC cards. I was doing it dramatically, going through the packs bottom up, only revealing the card number, and then looking them up on the pop report to see who it was.

    Grote,

If I did not go to bed I would have tried to talk you out of it. LOL!

Great score on the Ryan. Looks like at least an 8 to me. Really nice. Congrats.

    Tim,

Good to see you rippin' some packs! Love the 74 Aaron (my all time fave player). The 77 Ryan is awesome!

    Tim,
Nice stuff!! I watched part of the thread while you were ripping, but just couldn't hang any longer.
I think the 75 mini thread and talks of ripping Dave's box put you over the edge!!
Anyways congrats on the Ryan. Here's to hoping it lands in a 9 holder!!
  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,745 ✭✭✭
Great thread. I would add the 77 Bobby Darwin and Sandy Alomar to your card saver list unless there is something that isn't showing in the scan.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

Thanks for all the kind words again, guys! It was a lot of fun and I didn't go crazy, so I don't have any ripper's remorse, lol..

The 77 opc Ryan is the biggest hit but as far as grades go, the 77 Topps will probably fare best. If I can get a 9OC on the Aaron, that will pay for the pack, and even if he isn't a HOFer, a Mint 9 Oliva would be nice! In the scan, the card looks a bit tilted, but in hand, it doesn't, so I'm hopeful on that one!

I may revisit this thread tonight for another pack rip (or two) image

    Tony, don't worry, I haven't ripped any 75 minis....yet image

  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,743 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks, Scott! I'm hoping it can land in a Mint 9 holder, if they don't hit me on T/B centering.

<< <i>tim wheres the rip on the 1973 opc? lolimage >>

Terry, if only I had saved all those raw 73 OPC packs I bought from you a decade ago at $30 a pack, LOL!

I do have a few graded still but at the prices they now command, I am loathe to crack any. I try to crack only packs graded 8 or lower. image

    Nice job Tim,

Good luck with all the grades but especially with that 77 Ryan.

    Thanks, George!

I just ripped the two '81 Topps wax packs I bought from ClockworkAngel via the board rip and pulled a few card saverable cards. I know david (ldferg) has a bead on the '81 set, so wondering if any here have any grading upside? The Yaz is really sharp; definitely subbing that one.
