Any idea what that 1868 Proof Set in Aluminum will go for?

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,461 ✭✭✭
The set (as advertised on the back cover of the latest Coin World) is going up in January Heritage auction.

What are some realistic guesses?

Don't know - depends on if there's an underbidder to Simpson.

1868 is the most common year for aluminum die trials. I would be very surprised to hear that he needs even one coin in this set.

I don't think that the one I posted is the same as the one for sale (the grades are a little higher). I think that I saw the sale set on display at the spring ANA in Portland in 2009.

    Good gosh that is cool!

Thanks for posting pics (even though it may not be the set the OP is talking about). Close enough.

What's the story on the box pictured here and how does it enter into the provenance?

This is one set I'd like own raw ... IN the box, not in slabs.

Some 19th century boxes are WAY COOL. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The aluminum should help keep the weight of the box down!
WTB... errors, New Orleans gold, and circulated 20th key date coins!
  • I'll say $400k w/the juice.

That set in the box is unbelievable. I agree it looks 10 times better in the original box than being slabbed. If that is your set Boiler78 you have an absolute beauty.

I believe I read somewhere that there were five presentation sets issued in these cases. In any event, I'd guess that twice that many sets were produced, and that not all of the sets had cases.

Gotta be low cuz I'd write a check right now for it at that amount and I don't even need it.

What a fabulous set. Locking it up, safe and sound, makes sense. But boy would I love having it on display to enjoy.

I used to own one of those sets image and it was my understanding at the time that mine was the best. It was less than 100K when I bought it and I traded it for a small eagle 1797 $10 at the time but this is a long time ago. Andy probably knows the set I'm talking about.

I think the set was a pretty good deal. I'd have gladly paid 10% less than it brought, and I would have expected to flip it quickly for a profit.
