I've been here since '01 and probably done more lurking than posting. This forum is what you make it, good folks have come and gone over the years, but it does appear the we get some good new blood in here too. Heck, even BNB provided some entertainment, even though his antics were questionable here. Even so, that was better than some of the politcial ram-jam threads that seem to pop up now and then.
If one spends their life being a doomsday prepper and nothing happens just before they pass, do they die sad? Me and my wife have run into our share at many a coin show. We'd rather chase coins (well maybe just me) and beaches, travel and just have fun in life rather than hoard gold in a bunker. This forum to me is just icing on the cake, I hope it keeps living on.
I've been on the forum for the past 4 years that I've been with PCGS as well as several previous years with Premium Numismatics.
Today's forum is a lot more civil. Perhaps to some it's more boring, but that thought brings to mind driving by a car accident. You don't want to look but you just have to.
We have attempted to eliminate the ambushing, name calling, personal attacks and other negative non-constructive posts. We have tried to keep this forum focused on US coins, not personalities or divisive posts designed to create controversy. A lot of forum members bit the dust in the process. Everyone of them was warned, some repeatedly, before they were banned. We have let a few return after a 6 month probation. Some will never be allowed back due to the nature of their offense.
There are a lot more people lurking here than posting (including most of the banned members). Lurkers range from your average collector, to a YN, to wealthy but anonymous collectors. We monitor these boards because, unfortunately, we have to. Due to the open nature of this forum you never know who is reading a post.
This forum is supposed to be about having fun and exchanging information about US coins. Personally, I would rather have fewer posts that were more thought provoking and educational than a bunch of personal agendas that have nothing to do with coins.
My suggestion is that if you want to change this forum then start posting.
My suggestion is that if you want to change this forum then start posting. >>
That is good advice but I do not see what is wrong with it now. Maybe some personalities are gone but a forum that is little more than a cult of personalities would turn me off and would send me packing if it got out of hand.
Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.
As in all things what you "get out if it" corresponds directly to what you "put in to it".
The US Coin Forum is different today than it was in prior years. It does seem to have dropped off somewhat (my perception, which may have nothing to do with reality). To pick it back up, people should make an effort to come up with and post interesting thread topics. Doing so on a regular basis is difficult and some people are better at it than others. But if one does not try, some of the blame should rest on one's shoulders.
So I think I will post a new thread today. Hopefully it will stir a little interest.
I think Don Willis is spot on. If you don't like the board, contribute something to change it for the better.
I lurked here for a good couple years before registering my ID...and I hear the folks talking about the "good old days"... I don't remember them being all THAT good. Many times I saw where a well intentioned OP would start a thread, you'd get a few on-topic replies, then others would hijack the thread and use it to rehash whatever drama they had going on... and then carry it over onto other threads. One thing that irked me in particular was that at one point there was a contingent who steadfastly thought that all dealers were evil, widow-robbing, money grubbers who killed puppies in their spare time, so posts made by dealers were sometimes met with snarkiness and antipathy if not outright ridicule. Other OPs would post something of theirs with a title like "Opinions Please" or something similar...when in reality the title should have read "Tell me my coin's the best you've ever seen or I'll flame you". I could go on but you get the idea.
I think I'll take the good NEW days, thanks. Things are more civil and the people here have brains and common sense...and we can have a legitimate debate about something without having it become contentious. Sure there are a few posters who are now gone who I would like to see back, but like Don said... many were given multiple chances before the plug got pulled. So, whose fault is it, really?

There are certainly some improvements over the years and civility is one of them. This place is more positive and user friendly (especially for newbies).
Obviously nothing will change but the heart and soul were ripped out of the place when the the plug was pulled on the open forum. Most attempts to patch the damage are greeted by a chorus of people saying a thread or post is "off-topic". We have no choice but to try to be good guests and stay away from the mashed potatos as it were.
I believe if an attempt were made to promote the site and add a few resources it could become more important than ever. It seems no solution is possible given the needs of PCGS.
Of course time can heal anything so patience might be sufficient.
I have been viewing this forum for many years now. I do notice some of the older members who posted years ago are not here(banned, moved on). I think an amnesty would be a good idea. I also think unless you are using foul language you should be allowed to say what you want, even if it is anti "the company". Freedom of speech is not guaranteed on a forum, but it helps stimulate thought and keeps you coming back. Censorship is never a good thing. What I notice is that there is much more activity when the mint is selling something that many members are going to buy and make money on. That is ok with me too. I like that I can make a quick buck once in a while from the advice given here. But, most of all I really like that if I have a question, someone here will always answer it. That is invaluable and keeps me coming back.

I'll go with rule #6 -
Rule 6) This forum is about US Coins. If your post is not directly related to US Coins then this is the wrong forum. Do not post it or your posting privileges may be removed.
a. The banning of established, opinionated members
b. The loss of the off topic forum
c. Repetitive threads
d. Repetitive threads
e. Stagnation in the hobby- the state quarter program was relatively new when this forum started in 2001. That influx of new collectors helps when there are new programs to talk about.
f. A hobby like this takes a backseat to real life events like economic collapse, etc.
g. Other interests, family, career, etc. that take time away from ogling at shiny discs of stamped metal.

A lot of the banned members had axes to grind. A lot of the banned members were very good people. Some were both.
It might be unwise for PCGS to allow anyone back who didn't agree to leave his axe at the door. Many of those given a second chance had to be rebanned so an amnesty might not have the positive effect we'd want it to. It would significantly increase the amount of moderation required.
I find myself not contributing to the degree I once did but this is because after so many posts I've already said almost everything (on-topic and off).
This thread is getting long, and this might get missed, but I hope not ...
How many people have you invited here in the last year?
A casual contact and subsequent suggestion with someone via eBay, another forum, etc. that has an interest in coins is a good way to keep more people involved here.
The only reason I found this place was because of Ken Boardman and Jim Dimmick. Both of them had invited me here after contact through other venues. The second invite suggested maybe I should see what was going on ... and I have been since grateful they made the suggestion.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”
I have been on this forum since it began - and the old forum before this one. Sure, things change, people come and go. Overall, I find it to be a great forum and participate in several of the options other than U.S. Coins. I enjoy it very much, and when I can get off this temporary assignment, will be back participating on a daily basis. Cheers, RickO
I think OP is just bored - of the forum, and maybe even the hobby itself. In line with the sentiment from Don, this forum is what we make of it. Feeling like there aren't enough interesting posts? Start one. Feeling like there isn't anything interesting left to post about? Maybe you're burned out, so take a break.
Personally, I am not able to go to many shows, so this place is my window into the social part of the hobby. I like this forum as it is, and recognize it is far and away the best place online for discussions related to the hobby. In fact, I owe most of my enlightenment on this hobby to this forum and its users, and I likely would not have ever been as interested, invested or passionate without it. Mark me down as someone with no real complaints.
I tend to believe that the big picture issues are the major causes:
a) Decline of the economy, with median income down 8% for working families during the past 4 years. Factor in skyrocketing fuel and food prices, and disposable income is WAY down.
b) Decline of PCs in general. Computer sales are way down in the U.S., with major companies such as Hewlett Packard and Dell in sunset mode. Most new purchases tend to be smart phones or tablets. This forum is not friendly to these other devices, though it is possible to use them here.
c) Decline of coin prices. Coin prices are down. Like it or not, people are more interested when prices are going up and people are making money.
c2) The glory days of flipping U.S. mint products are fading away. This forum was one of the best places to get that information. There were thousand post long threads on some of the new products. Many forumites made decent money on various mint products, with a few experiencing huge windfalls. Many would take those profits and buy other numismatic coins.
The rest of the issues being cited I see as minor. Each of the big picture issues I listed above could each account for a 10% to 20% decline in activity. Personally, I am glad that the train-wreck 100 posts pointless basher/troll threads are mostly gone. I am glad to see some of those strange people go. I say strange, because there were some that were like sorry dogs that could not let go of a bone. A few seemed to spend every waking moment responding to others. Usually the train-wreck threads were pointless arguments over nothing, such as whose side of the hobby or whose series is "bigger." The worst of them were basher threads where another party was made to look bad. However, when the other side happened to be a forum member also, seeing both sides usually made the thread starter look mostly at fault.
I did take note as soon as Gangnam Style hit 350,000,000 YouTube hits these forums scaled back a bit on presentation and style if not content and participation. Could be a coincidence?

I`ve been on this forum coming up on 3 years in Dec. and have thoroughly enjoyed it... I have met some fine people and enjoy many of the reads and reports of shows and above all seeing cool coins posted... I am a collector and have no other agenda other then chatting coins... It is surprising just how much one can learn on here plus it`s a great place to stay current with new things and shows in the coin industry/hobby... From time to time for one reason or another, mostly when i am crazy busy i am not on here as much as i would like but i always look forward to checking in when i can... Great place and i would like to personally thank PCGS for hosting this forum...
^ Sure. Keith is who got me interested in Kennedy half dollars (and my pursuit of them gave me a top five spot in the Registry before selling off to Mitch (Wondercoin). Greg's been to my home and I've been out with him. Great guy (even if he doesn't like my cats) and one I run into at Long Beach, but not as frequently as I'd like.
I also remember the race on the Open Forum for that 10,000th post. Lots of fun- lots of good times, but you know what?
Many more to come as the days turn into weeks; turn into months, turn into years right here on Collectors Universe.
Well, it IS still a great forum What I learn here (which is very informative and very valuable to me) has little to do with coins at this point though. PS - The Open Forum was a fun place until people started posting the personal data of others etc.
Another potential issue is that forum members must be "approved" before joining. The President of my local coin club attempted to join the forum several months ago, but his account was never approved by CU. Not sure why it didn't get approved, but the process was a bit of a turn off to this potentially valuable member to the forum, so much so that he didn't pursue the matter any further... not sure what he could have done anyways. I wonder how many other good members were never welcomed in the first place???

So you're being affected too! I thought it was because I now use an iMac, and its Safari browser isn't compatible with this FuseTalk 3.0. Are you using an iMac?
There were many posters that added lots of knowledge and character. Here's a partial list of good posters on the old boards who don't get much mention: Clankeye, Shylock, Dorkkarl, FC57Coins (RIP), GSAGuy, XPipeDream, SuperCoin, Hoot, Pushkin, RGL, TypeTone, etc.
The personality of this board seems to be transitioning from social to institutional. My research interest is social information systems, so the evolution is quite interesting.
Developing theory is what we are meant to do as academic researchers and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor
I think DPoole nailed it pretty well. These things go in cycles, and peoples' interests change and go in cycles. I don't post as much as before because I am taking a "break' in coins and re-thinking my collecting strategy -- but I will be back.
One thing that I think could help is to make a push to get new "blood" posting -- perhaps promote the message board more on the PCGS site and in numismatic publications -- by my obsevation, this is still the #1 most active and most informative numismatic forum -- PCGS should play that up in the Numismatist, Coin World, etc. And doing do would benefit PCGS -- if it were not for this board, I would never have submitted a single coin to PCGS. At one point I was subitting over 1000 coins per year.
Different strokes for different folks. If one can't find staying power by exploring this site, google "what to do when I am bored because there's no valueable information at pcgs.com ".
As someone with a limited knowledge of coins, I can say I don't ask very many of the questions I would like to on this forum. I don't want to be "that guy" that asks stupid questions that many think I should already know.

If you need to blame someone...... blame Askari for creating the Darkside.
You remember when Keith Dagan and Margulies posted every 5th thread? Yes!

<< <i>There are two other changes that I feel would improve this forum, get the "Preview" and "Search" function working again. I know I post less often when I am unable to use the "Preview" function. Using the Testing Forum instead is a hassle. >>
So you're being affected too! I thought it was because I now use an iMac, and its Safari browser isn't compatible with this FuseTalk 3.0. Are you using an iMac?
... then again, we got some young blood. Just wait and see it morph.

The personality of this board seems to be transitioning from social to institutional. My research interest is social information systems, so the evolution is quite interesting.
and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor

I do not miss the nonsense, anti-slabbing and anti-PCGS posts and personal attacks that used to fill page 1 on a regular basis.

Wow coinstartled, way to bring a dead horse back to life.
More blue-haired angst and hand wringing on the way.
As someone with a limited knowledge of coins, I can say I don't ask very many of the questions I would like to on this forum. I don't want to be "that guy" that asks stupid questions that many think I should already know.
If coin guy was mr mark feld..he still posts a lot. I read everything he puts out

Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc
His revival occurred about a year ago after Brett took his position.
Well 7 years later we are still here. Well a lot of us are.
Mark was coinguy1. He's now @MFeld !
He was banned and then later brought back after we discovered that we couldn't get along without him.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
