If you had $1250 to spend on any single coin...

FadeToBlackFadeToBlack Posts: 7,847 ✭✭✭✭✭
What would you get? This is pretty much a real exercise, I'm gonna sell all my slabbed Morgans (I don't have many) and pick up one nice coin. I was originally leaning towards a MS65DMPL Morgan, but I figured I'd see if anybody else had any better suggestions. It will be, by far, the most valuable single coin in my collection, so I'd like something nice, XF40 at worst.

Is this limited to Morgan Dollars?? If so, there are probably some really nice MS67 toned examples in that range or maybe even some MS67+ or MS67* coins that could be purchased.

An XF 1897-O Barber Half lists at $1250, but you'll be unlikely to find one, regardless of the asking price.
    That's what I'd buy.

Good luck with that. Buy as many as you can at that price.

I was going to say that I would buy a slightly better date dirty WM Liberty $10 in PCGS OGH/CAC 61

You should add for $1,250 ... The last one I bought which was an MS-64 Brown piece (common Bank of NY hoard variety) cost quite a bit more than that.

$10 gold pieces have mentioned, for example a no-motto in XF or AU, or a with-motto or indian ten in MS61 or MS62, would fit the budget, and have both collector and intrisic metal value. To go with a higher grade US gold coin, you'd have to go with a smaller coin, perhaps a quarter eagle or half eagle.

For that money you could get a really nice Capped Bust Half type piece. Gorgeous design, some come with gorgeous toning, cracks, varieties, and they're just flat interesting - much more so than another cookie-cutter Morgan.

An 1834 Classic Head Half Eagle would be the earliest US gold coin.

  • BaleyBaley Posts: 22,663 ✭✭✭✭✭
For non-US, perhaps a Spanish 1 or 2 escudo dated in the 1700's, or a Dutch Ducat from the 1600's, or certain Byzantine and ancient coins that are even older..

    Twice.

A Fugio, an AU $10 Indian, or another gold ancient.

Is your primary goal investing or getting a nice coin for your collection?

If investing, buy 90% junk silver, silver bullion as close to spot as you can or 20th century key/ semi key dates in as high condition as the $1250 allows.

If for you collection, buy the nicest DMPL your funds allow.

I have one, 1852. I doubt you could find an AU58- much less CAC- for $1,250.

A Fugio would be good. Everyone should have one. You could stay in the Morgan series with a better date, like a nice VF 89-CC or AU58 96-S or 92-CC. Perhaps a 70-CC seated dollar in Fine. If you don't have a pillar dollar, you should have one of those, too, and $1250 will buy a rather nice one.
  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
To each their own, but I like the Fugio idea as well.
If I didn't already have one, thanks to a great forum member/dealer (Commoncents05), that is probably what I would get....if I weren't getting something for a series I collect.
2nd would be a Mass Copper coin.

What I would NOT get is a generic coin or a proof anything coin.

I'd consider a nice $10. Liberty, slightly better date, in MS62

or a Draped Bust Half, Quarter or Dime in the best grade the budget would allow

If it's going to be the single most valuable coin in your collection, I'd get something that stands out, you can be very proud of and fits your collecting preferences.

As others have said and shown, a PCGS classic gold coin would be nice. It's always nice to have some gold and it would be a good centerpiece for your collection image

I'm not sure if you're into toners, but another option I'd consider in your price range is a PCGS MS monster toner Morgan. It's nice to have some strong color and it would be a coin you could show off.

A few people have mentioned Fugios and I'm a Fugio fan but I prefer MS examples and a lot of those are more than your current budget.
  • Its already been mentioned but I really like the classic head $5 gold 1834 to 1838. If you can't afford the early gold this gold coin is the last and most affordable of the early gold and the design is really what its called "classic". I think you could get one of the more common dates in EF 45 for $1250 or even less.
