Would like some opinions ... AT or NT?

My gut reaction is this looks too good to be true, however I bought this on the cheap and I am thinking about rolling to dice to see if PCGS will grade it.

Curious what you all think? Am I wasting my money?

If you think it's AT ...what's the "tell"?

(By the way, none of the sellers other items were toned, which is usually a good sign.)

It's a pretty coin, but imo, there's a good reason you got it on the cheap. Save your $.

At first glance I thought it looked ODD but then I noticed that that color is different on the devices than the surrounding fields (elevation toning or whatever they call it). I think it has a shot.

However, the TPGs will grade MA not whether it's NT so who knows?

7 years ago a lot of folks on this forum would be throwing money at you for a shot at that coin. Hang onto it and the times will change again and it will holder and sell for moon money. Or send it to ngc. They will prob grade and star it if you need out of it.

I'm not real great at this but you get toning like that if it was cooked, right?

I think it has been worked on/doctored.
I like the look, for melt value or so, but wouldn't think of it grading.
If it did, you would have a huge payday as someone would step up to buy it....but again, I don't think it would.

Some of the colors just don't seem as natural, especially in the way they sit on the coin. Even the fact that obv/rev are pretty similar is concerning.

I'm going to guess liquid enhancement.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

As I have demonstrated repeatedly, - I don't know diddlie...

But, IMHO; I think it's a very pretty AT coin, worth the dice roll/cost of sending it in.

I don't care for it. The toning looks too even and contrived.

If you're a collector's club member, have a free submission which is about to expire, and don't have anything else to send in, I'd take a WTF attitude and take a flyer on it. Otherwise, I'd pass.

Being the cheap SOB I am, I'd also drop it off at a show or at PCGS, if this logistically makes sense, so I'm only stuck paying one way's worth of shipping on it. I could see paying $15 to take a shot, I can't see $45 or $50 re shipping both ways and a grading fee.

I've owned thousands of coins, some for 3 or 4 decades and have never had a coin color up like that. I'd guess AT based on what I've personally seen.

It looks like an AU58. Perhaps it toned in an album, but only after being dipped back in the 70's. Would that be natural or artificial? I think PCGS will Gen it.

Perhaps it toned in an album, but only after being dipped back in the 70's.

I agree with EagleEye about the album toning. I just noticed the wear and some grime on the high points, so I'm not sure that it was ever dipped.

Is the color progression the same on a dipped coin as on an original surface? I can almost buy into the color progression on this coin and I like the some of the crust on the toning, but I really don't like the photo, or the wear. I'm of the opinion that to achieve toning on a worn coin, you would have to force it - which brings me back to the possibility of it being lightly dipped but not enough to make it bright. Why would they do that?image

I am leaning AT, but the color shift in elevated areas - the motto for example - has me wondering.

Too many AT red flags. Artificial looking color progression, colors seem to float/look like an oil spill, "clown" colors. If it were NT it would tone differently in the devices (where there is more mint lustre), and tend to be darker around the rim rather than such uniform "brightness".

The biggest tell of all: The toning is the same/constant across the higher points of the coin as it is deep in the devices. Even on a coin with 100% mint lustre, this wouldn't be the case.

    Verdict: AT

PCGS *might* grade a brand new SAE with that kind of color, but certainly not an AU+/MS walking liberty half. Save your money for another coin to submit.

Not bashing here but I think that the best shot at a grade is ATS. Just a fact that their idea of MA differs somewhat from PCGS . . . Not that there's anything wrong with that ! ! ! image
