What Will Your Biggest Complaint About the ANA Be?

And perhaps if we know in advance, we can head off all the whining now

Hotel rooms are on average almost $100/ night more than Rosemont but in my opinion that's a fair price to pay for not having to spend time in Rosemont. Not Chicago, but Rosemont.

Hey, just trying to get into the spirit of the OP.
If I come home with a couple cool pieces of plastic and get to spend some time with Oreville, it will have been a great show.

I think he is asking about the ANA convention in Philly.

For my wife, it's the concrete floors - they have no give.

Hey watch what you say....I recall Legionaire's disease broke out initially in a hotel in 1973 or 74 a few blocks from where the show will be in Philly.
A.N.A. website is NOT user friendly & NOT non-coin geek friendly.
Not enough dealer "support" during show.
1. t.v.'s throughout w/ spot prices
2. Free FAST internet
3. info booth in middle of show for customers looking for certain dealers, items, etc
Stacks, HA, grading co. in the middle or in better locations so dealers get more traffic.
free seminars for public ( abc's of coins, IRA & metals, world coins, etc )

"no mainstream advertising" -- We will be running a brand-new commercial on two network TV stations, in addition to doing special online promotions with each. Radio ads will run on two major stations.
"Stacks, HA, grading co. in the middle or in better locations so dealers get more traffic." -- The auction companies and grading services are allowed to pick their own booth locations, just like everyone else. The grading companies typically request booths against the wall.
"free seminars for public" -- Here are links with details to:

6 sessions of Coin Collecting 101 at the World Mint Stage http://www.worldsfairofmoney.com/world-mint-promenade.aspx
People can also sign up for a free, 2-hour Coin Collecting Basics class from 12-2 pm Saturday.
"Free FAST internet" -- This would be fantastic. However, based on the fees the convention center charges for Internet, it is not feasible. Most dealers get around this by bringing their own air cards, which ensures you internet access at any show you travel to.
"info booth in middle of show for customers looking for certain dealers, items, etc" -- We provide information to customers at the ANA Area, admissions, the message center, and other locations. We also have a dealer list on the ANA Shows app, in the program, and on the website. (And we're hoping to expand the scope of listings with specific specialties in the next year.) I will suggest a set help desk in the planning for next year's WFM. Thanks for the suggestion.
As for the yellow fever, please everyone, please make sure your inoculations are up to date. ;-)

How about the ANA buying a mobile hotspot for this and future shows.

<< <i>A show complaint I've heard repeatedly is the show is too long. Setup is on Monday and dealers with tables can't leave until Saturday evening at the earliest. A show with a Tuesday setup is plenty long enough. >>
Actually dealer setup is Monday and Tuesday morning. So, if someone believes they can set up in two hours on Tuesday, there is no requirement to be there Monday.

Unfortunately, Summer Seminar lost a significant amount of money before rates when up. Another example of how the ANA was previously run as a large coin club and not a multi-million dollar small business. I believe it's an okay thing if ANA loses a small amount of money on Seminar, but it's not something that can be subsidized by a six-figure a year amount.
Additionally, costs of running SS have continued to rise as well -- airfares to bring instructors out, room costs at Colorado College, etc.

PLEASE!!!
Having taken tables at the FUN show for several years, I have to say FUN treats the dealers much better. About 10 years ago a major snowstorm shut down airports all along the East coast. FUN picked up the tab to run the security room for four extra days free to the dealers. You won't catch the ANA doing that.
I know I'm in the minority, but I don't care for the ANA show at all.
<< <i>The way their employees shake down dealers for contributions to the organization in order to consign spots on the floor at their big summer show. I overheard a conversation with a dealer a few years ago that almost made me puke.
Years ago when I set up at the summer ANA as my own company I inquired about upgrading to a better floor location. In response the ANA folks said they could accommodate that for a small donation...a "small" donation for only $20,000!
And that was for a standard inline booth, not a Heritage sized horseshoe.
I don't mind paying more for a premium location but when the requested amount is enough to buy a new mid size car it doesn't bode well for the organization's reputation.

For the ANA, conventions provide over 60% of our annual revenue and allow us to have 35 full-time staff members, a headquarters building, a library and a museum. Overall, we run very close to a balanced budget with the programs currently in place. The cost of running a security room for four extra days would mean that same amount of money would have to be cut from somewhere else.
Regional coin clubs, like FUN and CSNS, do not have any of that overhead. The profit from their conventions is just about free money to them, as their only other major expense is the cost of producing their magazines. This also allows them to be very lavish with their exhibit awards -- with I believe, a half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce gold eagle per category.
A number of people keep asking that the ANA offer the same. Unfortunately, with 27 exhibit categories at the summer convention, that would cost over $36,000 a year -- not counting Best of Show or any of the other exhibit awards. I would love to be able to do that... as would the rest of the Board. But, once again, that would require equivalent cuts elsewhere.

I believe issues like this have been somewhat alleviated by the introduction of price tiers for dealer booths in the last few years. By offering different price levels, a dealer can choose which area of the floor they wish to be in. Obviously, first choice of booths in an area is still done based on stars awarded for the dealers work with the ANA -- including exhibit judging, writing articles for the Numismatist, promoting the ANA, instructing a course at a convention or summer seminar, advertising in the Numismatist and, yes, cash donations.
I don't know when you had the experience you did -- or who said that to you -- but if something like that happened today, I'd hope you would bring it to my attention -- or that of another board member.
