<< <i>Not trying to knock that coin, but why would the obv stars be more of an issue for 65 than the rev talons? >>
The obv is weighted more than the rev for grading. Add in the that the stars are in negitive space so they draw the eye where the claw isn the first thing you look at and I think it is a fairly logical progression
My love.....bought from Brian Cusihing when he was with JJ Teaparty. Got her attributed DD0-FS-101 because of the expertise of crypto79. I know tradedollarnut already posted his gorgeous 77P, but I couldn't resist showing off my lady.
Keoj is quite slammed at work. He also likes to play with the dog. He continues to plod along, with the help of other Trade Dollar idiots, on some sort of book on the series.
Sorry for being late to the party. I agree, EVP coins are quite nice!!!!!
Beautiful coin, Lance. I'm impressed by the sharp strike, great feather detail on both legs of the eagle. Static photos just can't capture luster very well; I'm sure it rolls all over the place. That is a perfect Type II/II coin.
It appears that while waiting for Coolest to post his 78-CC we have jumped ahead to the 78-S. Here's one of mine with some interesting chops, particularly on the obverse.
You're right Stealer, that is not your average chop. But I have seen that exact same mark on a number of chopmarked Trade dollars, so I assume it was made by some type of tool the Chinese used to test the coin. I would love to find out more about that mark.
If only I could read the language of my ethnicity, I'd be able to tell you what the other marks mean although I'm not entirely certain if the other two chops on the obverse are Chinese either. Could the 3 o'clock chop be a Japanese mark? I've heard they used miniscule punches for their chops.
If Coolest does not post his coin here, can we revoke his "you suck" accolade? Or, at least, award him a "boo hiss" accolade?
And, I'm a little bit surprised that some of the regulars here who are into TD's didn't know about my appreciation for this series. Maybe I've just not posted much for the past several years.
Never thought I would see a thread on Trade dollars reach 100.
Here's something you don't see very often, an 1878-CC Trade dollar chopmarked. The 78-CC is a rarity on its own. Popular wisdom was that all of the very few that were released circulated in the Carson City area. However, a few have been found chopmarked, indicating that at least some did make it across the ocean. There are probably only about 200 or so circulated 78-CCs in existance of which 10-12 are chopmarked.

<< <i>Yeah, Keoj should be in on this thread. >>
Keoj has been swamped lately so unfortunately we may not see him anytime soon. Funny how quickly this could turn into a variety thread!
To keep things on track, wheres Goldbully with his fabulous 77p?

<< <i>That's a chopmarked 61 - no doubt in my mind. Eventually, that is... ;-) >>
Well, PCGS called it a 58. Not sure if it's just my photos but in hand I think there's too much rub on Liberty's knee to make a 61. JMO anyway

Day in and day out, no dealer can build a great set like Laura. But then again, I'm biased

I bought this one a few years ago because it has spectacular luster. Maybe the pix don't do it justice.

What a beauty.
<< <i>This is the thread I have always wanted but can barely take part in I am impressed by the two 78s as they don't always come very attractive >>
We should keep it going, just have it be a mass thread for Trade Dollars
