OT: Grab bags raising money for Harrisburg, IL tornado victims - possible 52 Topps Mantle

For those that do not know, Harrisburg, IL was slammed Wednesday morning with an EF 4 tornado. I live about 1 hour south in western KY.

A friend of mine, Jason, who is a fellow collector, is from Harrisburg, but lives near Kansas City, MO. He left yesterday and is in Harrisburg now helping out. He does not post here at CU, but is an occasional poster at Net 54. He has started trying to raise money for the victims by putting together sports card grab bags for $10 each to help with the relief effort.

I can vouch for him. He is trying to do a great thing and I thought I would give the generous people here on the CU forums an opportunity to help and to also be able to get some grab bags. Not only will you be helping the victims, the grab bags will be worth more than $10. Plus, there is a chance to win an authentic/altered/raw 1952 Topps Mantle. It is Jason's Mantle. I have seen it in person and it is authentic. The kicker is that all 2,000 grab bags have to sell. The details are in the Net 54 thread which I will link at the bottom. Jason already has many of the grab bags made up. He and I will be meeting up sometime either tonight or tomorrow. I will be donating some cards to help with the effort as well.

He has already sold a few hundred of these grab bags. Please check out the Net 54 thread linked below. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. If I don't know the answer, I will try to get it.

Thanks and God bless.

this is an awesome idea, and a truly selfless act.

but, doesn't the format of his giveaway ensure that anyone who buys now has no chance at the mantle? he'll only give it away if he sells out, and is shipping out batches already...
  • I'm in..sorry for any losses that the victims may have suffered
  • Bump. Count me in too. Money sent. Good luck Jason!
I have no collecting direction. I just buy stuff!

In his post with the details he mentions how he will do it. It is my understanding the his business card (which will be used to redeem the Mantle) is already in one of the envelopes and the Mantle has already been sent to Leon (the Net 54 moderator). However, the business card for the Mantle is only redeemable if he sells out of grab bags. He even told me if he even gets close that it will be redeemable. He just didn't want to sell 50 grab bags and give away a 52 Topps Mantle.

Seems like this thread got lost.

Hey guys lets help these people out. Just the thought of a loved one hurt or loosing them is a chiling thought not to mention the total loss of your home. We should help these people out. If we got money to spend on baseball cards we surely have money to help our fellow americans.

Just bought 10 of the ones that are left. What a great gesture on Jason's part. Let's help him raise the $20K .
Your $10 is not only going to help some folks in need, you also get the excitement of seeing what's in your sealed envelope.
Thank you Jason for doing this, and thank you frankhardy for bringing it to these boards

I knew you guys would come through! Keep it coming.

You know, I have found myself complaining if I have to fix some shingles on my roof because of the wind. Then, I think about the fact that I still have a house and many people in Harrisburg got their houses blown away. It kind of puts it in perspective.

  • Glad to see this got some more steam.

If you don't buy at least one, your missing out!!!

Come on everyone is doing it, don't be the last to join!! What's $10 bucks. That's 2 submissions...

I know we can't help every person, or tragedy that occurs, we'd all be on welfare. But when it's one of our own, we have to support.

I heard last night a 15 month old was found in a field in critical condition, hundreds of feet away. She went to the hospital and went to heaven. The siblings and parents also passed away.

I'll match the next 10 packs. I'm going to sell all the cards I get for an additional donation.

Let's go!!!! This is a group rip, buy a pack or a few. We sell out 10k pack rips like nothing. I would expect the same here... image

Support is picking up some steam. I just got a call from Jason. He posted an update at Net 54. He emailed me a copy of what he posted and he wanted me to post it here. One thing that I want to point out - all packages will be shipped out at the end of March. Here is what he posted.

    ***

Hey all........Nothing is too late. Thanks for the tremendous support. I have decided to take these until March 30th. I have just returned from Harrisburg and will process everything as it comes in and ALL packages will be mailed on March 30th or the day after. That will give us plenty of time and opportunity to hit the mark of 2000 packages to try to raise the $20K and give some lucky person an authentic 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Rookie valued somewhere between $3-5K. Tell your collecting buddies. We are also posting on a couple of other forums and great support is rolling in from CU as well. SO far over $1k raised! I will be CAREFULLY choosing where the funds are sent. I am leaning towards helping the poor who were renters and probably had no insurance. I have contacts working on that and I plan to return again this month to help some more.

And Frankhardy here, member since 2003 has no bearing backing this guy up?

I'm not familiar with this thread you posted from 2007, 5 years ago. I'm not reading through it, but the guy putting the packs together did what exactly 5 years ago?

    Frank...what is going on here?

I try to donate some money or cards to most of the charities here, and I intend to do so for this cause. However, I think I will just go through the Red Cross for this one.
  • frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,142 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am home for lunch and have to leave. Not sure what is going on here. I will read that other thread tonight. If Jason is being accused of something, I want to get to the bottom of it.

    Shane

  • Shane just called me wanting to know what the negative post was about and considering I do not participate in this forum regularly, I felt a need to put it to rest. We have received great support on net54 and here as well. Thank you. Shane had read my net54 post and offered to post it here considering he is an active member and we have done many deals together. Thanks so much again and I will later post how the funds raise will get spent.

It really saddens my heart that someone has to sabotage a good thing for a community that is hurting. We have sold almost 110 of these so far and that will raise so far over $1k. Please continue the support and know that all packs will be mailed out as frankhardy posted at the end of March. I have made up a total of 2000 packs so there are many many left with alot of nice stuff in them.

(edited to keep it positive for the cause)

    Thanks

After talking to Jason this afternoon, I thought about what to say. Here goes...

I am not sure what went on over 5 years ago. I refuse to get into a mud slinging contest over this other thread. I talked to Jason about it today and his explanation was more than satisfactory for me. Jason and I talk often (at least once a week and most of the time more). I have done many deals with him in the thousands of dollars. We have even bought collections together. I met him through the Net 54 boards in 2008. He has even been to my house. Our families have had dinner together. He has been a close friend.

Again, his explanation of what happened was more than satisfactory for me. I would hope that my reputation on these boards for the past 9 years would count for something. I hate to see that someone would go digging into something like that to try to ruin a good thing. Jason is giving of himself, his time, his money, and his talents in construction and I appreciate the fact that I can help even a little bit.

He has posted his phone number above for anyone that has any questions. He is very easy to talk to.

Thanks to all who have given and who have taken part. I hope that we can raise even more in the coming days.

(I feel like this is loosing steam. I hope I'm wrong)

    Shane

Trust me when I say that I'm not here to ruin a good thing.

It's easy to to try and twist this around. But the fact is that no one will know where the money goes. He can carefully choose to give it to whoever he wants. And there's no way of knowing who or where it goes. Or even how many "grab bags" are sold.

I found it disturbing that Jason was acting as though members were cowards because they didn't send him their addresses after he put them on "the list" (thats very strange???). Calling people losers, juvinile and other names.

Maybe I'm on the list now???

Most importantly he proved that at least on one occassion... he was NOT a man of his word. Proved himself a liar in his first and only appearence here.

So you guys can jump up and down and accuse me of trying to ruin a good thing. But the truth is that I'm looking out for everyone here.

There's no transparency at all in this "grab bag".

jesus, it's like i'm back on my cigar forums with this sniping. I don't collect sports cards, but lurk here to see what people have. I don't know anyone on this board, but if someone who has been here 9 years is willing to put his reputation on the line for someone else, that means something to me. It's hard and time consuming to build a rep.

I believe in Karma, if it doesn't work out, karma will come back and revisit sometime in the future.

I just bought 2 more packs for a total of 5 packs this week. Maybe i'll put the cards in the spokes of my bike....LOL

<< <i>It's hard and time consuming to build a rep. >>

frankhardy's reputation is not on the line here.

Jason's reputation is his own doing. His one and only appearence here is all we have to go by.

And like I said, no one knows where the money's going, or even how much money is involved.

I predict the winner of the Mantle will be an unknown such as you, or an alt.

  • I get it, but I think it's stupid and ridiculous, just as the statement I typed here.

:::eyeroll::: I guess you just dont get it.
  • I donated a $100, and it won't break me. I like to trust people, and if the cheat, lie, or steal they have to answer to one person.

Thanks Trent for pointing it out. I won't be doing anymore through this avenue.

I'll look forward to my grab bags! image

As the details in the original thread and this thread point out, the Mantle will only be redeemable if the grab bags sell out or come close. I will also keep everyone informed as to how much has been raised and where the money will go.

I really hate it when things like this happens. I feel bad that trust has been lost to some extent.

    Shane

  • Achinator......Refresh my memory, no clue to who you are. Packs will go out soon for you "doubters" for peace of mind. This was stuff donated by me and nobody else to try to support hurting people. Like the original post says, if 2000 packs sell I will gladly send the Mantle to whomever redeems the card. As for ebay I have 100% feedback with no problems in a few years. Once again, the old 5 year old thread was brought up (a situation where I was not even at fault......someone didnt pay me and cried about it here in CU). It doesnt shock me someone going by the name nightcrawler who I have never seen or dealt with I am sure try to ruin a good thing. I personally do not care what opinions are about where people will donate.

NEVER trust a person with an angry demonic smurf as their avatar. I am sure he is not happy in life and likes to spew negativity on everyone else.
You should change your name to "skincrawler" Thanks to those who have shown support so far and now I will be mailing out those packs paid for in the next few days to put minds at ease. Keep in mind we have sold about 120 so far out of 2000.

    Thanks

Maybe you should if you want this to be something that turns out positive.

  • I was referring to people who say they will go to Red Cross. My statement was meant to convey that I personally do not care whether they donate by purchasing packs or Red Cross, Salvation Army or whoever as long as they can and will it is always a good thing. I was not trying to be negative in that statement. I appreciate everyone here who has trusted in my efforts. We are sitting over $1K and it will all go straight to victims 100% of it.

    Thanks

Keep spinning this away from the real issue. No one has anything but your word that any of this is true.

You can pretend that when people recieve their "grab bags" that everyone's mind will be at ease. But only you will ever know the full story.

I commend your effort if it's truely sincere.

    Thanks
