Although this piece might intregue collectors who have not seen a lot of Bust dollars, this example is not outstanding. These coins did not see a lot of circulation and as a result it is unusual to see them in less than VF. They were used, however, so true Mint State examples are very scarce in my opinion.
Here is the highest grade piece I have, an AU-58. There is quite a bit of luster under toning that I did not capture in this photograph. I fell in love with this one when I saw it at a recent Baltimore show.
I would advise you to stick with a certified example of this type at this and higher price levels. Large numbers of these coins have been cleaned, and many have been re-colored.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Somewhat strange lighting to those pics in my opinion.....imparts a certain 'cleaned' look to the surfaces of the coin....either that or it's just the coin itself!
<< <i>Would definitely want that in a slab first before I bought it. Too many of these frequently come back with altered surfaces, cleaned, etc. >>
Thats the truth brother. I have improved somewhat in my grading skills but I still get skunked now and again. Its just not worth the trouble anymore, unless i've got it in hand and have a chance to get an experienced second opinion, Then maybe.

It's a handsome coin, if real, but for the money I'd dang sure wanna see it wrapped in TPG plastic.

and still slabbed & graded
i would like to see how many regular pcgs/ngc examples would actually pass a sniffer/shield submission
my guess is very few, even from graded holders
