I live pretty close to a strip center. If I was 20 again, I could throw a rock and hit my B&M's front
door. I've been in there maybe 3 times. Saw one 15 year old or so and have never seen another
    person. No numbers needed there!

Not quite as long but I feel the same way Curly ... and not because I would even mind a wait. They can be packed to the gills and one of the owner's boys, the floor manager, or the owner will wave or raise an eye to me, and see if I need to be taken care of quickly, or if I want to browse a bit first. I guess 20 years means something.

I finally got to the one in Monterey, CA. What a waste. Mostly junk, no knowledge of coins they had, etc.

I am to busy shaking everybody's hand to take a number, but I am not one to get in another mans way when business is being conducted

I could have given a succession of customers the same number today. 666. I swear it was one of those "why coin dealers drink" days. I gotta go buy a lunar calendar so I can go hide when there is a full moon, 'cause there musta been one last night! imageimageimage

    Certainly not my experience there.
I've sold to them and I've heard their buy prices on gold and silver bullion coins while waiting my turn.
Can't speak to their buy prices for scrap gold and jewelry however.

I wish there was a local B&M coin shop... I would not mind 'take a number' service.... if only there was a shop to frequent. Cheers, RickO

My local B&M dealer is not very customer service oriented because he is always too busy on ebay to help anyone (if someone were to walk in, which is very infrequently). Him and I have an alright relationship though after years of doing biz with him and having a couple of like interests.

Most of the people holding numbers have a box tucked under their arm with bullion, junk silver or jewelry - it doesn't take long to check out the display cases and move on. image

Theres one dealer I go to that is by appointment only. Well kinda. if you show up out of the blue he will work to get you in but likes it better when you call in advance ( common courtesy). Sometimes you get there and he has someone inside you have to wait outside. Its a tiny shoe box of a place and no real standing room with the amount of odd interesting items he has. Which is why hes by appointment. This is the same dealer when i got my parking ticket he wanted to help pay half cause he had me waiting 25 minutes and by the time i got out i just got my ticket.

  • Back in 1973, I walked into Jonathan's Coin Shop in the LA area. There were a dozen people milling around and looking at the large bid board for the upcoming auction. I had to wait for nearly 15 mintues to get to a counter to check out some potential purchases. At the time, it was a going concern alright. It was located close to Joel Rettew's shop, which had a young David Hall behind the counter.

The early 1970's were pretty much the last time most B&M shops were truly busy in the coin realm (not just precious metals and modern mint issues).

Another time, during the Hunt Bros. run on precious metals in the early spring of 1980, I went to Nevada Coin Mart (Stan Zurawski and family) in Las Vegas and had to wait in a line outside for 10 minutes, until one of the armed guards let me in to sell some sterling silver. Silver quotes were being updated every 15 minutes on a large board behind the counter. You could make (or lose) money while you were just standing in line.

The only time I've taken a number is at fast food places, and various Motor Vehicle Division offices.

  • There's always some old guy at one of the shops here. He must have the only number 'cause he's always there. Just sitting and taking up the owners time.

I have probably 4-6 B&M shops near my house with only one that I frequent.

In all honesty, all but one have a "The man in charge isn't here right now" circumstance on a regular basis. The one I elect to go to consistently has good service, maybe not any coins; but it keeps me coming back in to check out widgets.

Edited: I also bought my watch from the store.

    .
i would normally have to take a number since the B&Ms i frequent have a solid customer base BUT

i tend to sit for hours to the side going through coins so there usually isn't too much waiting since i

try to check out in-between customer floods and get there before the floods show up
