    Day 118 - 1988 Maxx Set

Card #53 - Alabama International Motor Speedway

NASCARD Radio take away: Now known as the Talladega Superspeedway which has a capacity to hold 175,000 people.

During 1960s Bill France was wanting to build a track faster and longer than Daytona International Speedway. He would end up breaking ground on an old airfield on May 23, 1968. The track would be named Alabama International Motor Speedway (AIMS), but the name would not carry on and was later changed to Talladega Superspeedway. The track opened on September 13, 1969 costing $4 million.

The first race at the new track was unlike any other; all the original drivers abandoned the track because of tire problems which caused Bill France to hire substitute drivers. The first finish was amazing with three cars side by side with the winner being Richard Brickhouse.

Card #56 - Charlotte Motor Speedway (Capacity 140,000)

NASCARD Radio take away: Charlotte Motor Speedway is a motorsports complex located in Concord, North Carolina, United States 13 miles from Charlotte, North Carolina. The complex features a 1.5 miles (2.4 km) quad oval track that hosts NASCAR racing including the prestigious Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend and the Sprint All-Star Race. The speedway was built in 1959 by Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner (partner and driver) and is considered the home track for NASCAR with many race teams located in the Charlotte area.

I feel that this track and ownership are the innovators of the sport. They were the first to have luxury suites at the track. Charlotte Motor Speedway was the first modern superspeedway to host night racing with a 1,200 fixture permanent lighting system. The most recent innovation was the installation of the world’s largest high definition video board at the track. It measures 200 feet by 80 feet and contains over 9 million LEDs.

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 9 years in 207 races with 5 Wins, 38 Top Fives, 75 Top Tens and 24 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD Radio take away: His first card is in the 1988 Maxx set. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1977 which helped him later on in racing. Alan Kulwicki was the 1986 Rookie of the Year and was the 1992 Cup Champion. The 1992 Cup Champion was the closest title win in NASCAR Cup Series history until the implementation of the Chase for the Cup format in 2004. It is important to note he was the first car owner driver to win a Cup Championship with a college degree. He was killed in a plane crash on Thursday April 1, 1993 returning from an appearance at the Knoxville Hooters in a Hooters corporate plane on a short flight across Tennessee before the Sunday spring race at Bristol. He was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998.

Three days after Kulwicki's death, Bristol race winner Rusty Wallace honored his former short track rival by performing Kulwicki's trademark Polish Victory Lap. Davey Allison died on July 13, 1993; competitors who had been carrying a #7 sticker in memory to Kulwicki added a #28 sticker for Allison. After the final race of the season, series champion Dale Earnhardt and race winner Wallace drove a side-by-side Polish victory lap carrying flags for Kulwicki and Allison. Kulwicki finished 41st in the final points standings despite competing in only five races

Bodine's creativity and innovation are not just limited to NASCAR racing. Bodine is the co-owner of the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Company. His bobsled interest started during the 1992 Winter Olympics when the U.S. Bobsled Team was having a tough time during competition

Bodine founded the USA Bobsled Project to help create a winning bobsled for the U.S. teams. The U. S. National Team first used their sleds in 1994. Ten years after Bo-Dyn's inception, the U.S. team won three medals in Bo-Dyn Bobsleds during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, American bobsledder Steven Holcomb piloted a Bo-Dyn Bobsled named "Night Train" to gold. Every January since 2006 at the Lake Placid, New York track, a charity run is held with the US bobsled team and NASCAR drivers to raise money for the sled project. Participants have included Todd Bodine (one of Geoffrey Bodine's brothers) and Tony Stewart.
