    Day 58 - 1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS (6 of 13)

    1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS A.J. Foyt (January 16, 1935 - Present)

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 30 years in 128 races with 7 Wins, 29 Top Fives, 36 Top Tens and 9 starting at the Pole.

USAC Champ Car / Gold Crown Series Statistics
Raced 35 years in 297 races with 67 Wins, 144 Top Fives, 181 Top Tens and 52 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD Radio.com take away: This is the same photo as the 1985 SportStar Sticker. There are 2 A.J Foyt's in this set. The Beckett guide calls this one 'with Indy car' but you can tell it's a stock car and it was taken at DAYTONA.

Mr. Foyt raced for 30 years (1963 - 1994) in NASCAR and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. One of his 7 wins was the 1972 Daytona 500.

He is the only person to record victories in the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500 stock car race, the 24 Hours of Daytona (twice, with co-driver Bob Wollek), the 24 Hours of Le Mans international sports car endurance race in Le Mans, France, as well as the 12 Hours of Sebring (his last major professional win, in 1985, with co-driver Bob Wollek).

    Thanks Ron!

Almost forgot that this is the 40th anniversary of NASCAR trading cards and 40 years ago Mr. Andy Granatelli (STP CEO) and Fred Lorenzen were handing out STP cards at Daytona! A.J Foyt won the 1972 Daytona 500 and his card is up on the same day as the Daytona 500! I have been going in order so it was not planned. It must be a sign.

    Day 59 - 1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS (7 of 13)

    1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS A.J. Foyt (January 16, 1935 - Present)

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 30 years in 128 races with 7 Wins, 29 Top Fives, 36 Top Tens and 9 starting at the Pole.

USAC Champ Car / Gold Crown Series Statistics
Raced 35 years in 297 races with 67 Wins, 144 Top Fives, 181 Top Tens and 52 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD Radio.com take away: There are two cards of A.J Foyt's in this set and this one is a portrait taken from the Racing Pictorial placemat collage. You will notice the loop line next to the card border on the right. If you view the placemat you will see it is part of his signature.

Mr. Foyt raced for 30 years (1963 - 1994) in NASCAR and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. One of his 7 wins was the 1972 Daytona 500.

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 22 years in 474 races with 18 Wins, 123 Top Fives, 208 Top Tens and 17 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: This is one of the short print (SP) cards in the set and his first card. He raced from 1973 - 1994 with 6 years of finishing 4th or better in championship points. 208 times in 474 races he finished in the top 10. Was named one of NASCARS's 50 greatest drivers.

    Day 62 - 1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS (10 of 13)

1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS Richard Petty (July 2, 1937 to Present)

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: This is the fourth card of "The King". He raced 35 years (1958 - 1992). This card I believe was never sold at the tracks or sold in 1986. I believe that after Ray Mann sold his business that the new owner discovered the uncut sheets in the inventory and they were then cut up and sold. They did not appear on the market until the 1989 - 1990 time frame.

    1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS Darrell Waltrip (February 5, 1947 - Present)

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 29 years in 809 races with 84 Wins, 276 Top Fives, 390 Top Tens and 59 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: This is the third card of Darrell Waltrip. He raced from 1972 to 2000 and won 3 championships (1981, 1982 & 1985). He was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest drivers. He was known as "Jaws" because he would always talk and run his mouth. He got away with it because he could back up all of the talk on the track. He is currently a lead television analyst and race commentator with Fox Broadcasting Company and Speed TV, a columnist at Foxsports.com and an author. He was inducted in to the NASCAR Hall of Fame with the class of 2012 and named one of the 50 Greatest NASCAR Drivers of All Time.

    Day 65 - Part II
So we finished up the 1986 SportStar Photo-Graphics set. Keeping these sets in order I want to give an honorable mention to the 1987 World of Outlaws set. This was the
first year for World of Outlaws cards and it came in a factory set box and was produced by James International Art, Inc. It is a 52 card set with an unnumbered checklist.

It gets an honorable mention because the last card in the set (Card 52) is a 16 year old named Jeff Gordon.

    Day 66 - 1988 Maxx Set
The 1988 Maxx set started the NASCAR trading card Boom. Jim McCullough, a Charlotte sports reporter realized that no one was making NASCAR trading cards. Baseball cards were all over the place so he approached NASCAR about creating a card set. I believe he got a 3 year exclusive license to create the cards.
It's hard to believe it took all those years but the 1988 Maxx was the first trading card set to be sold in wax packs and factory sets. There were 44 packs to a wax box. There are some variations in the cards. They are called the Myrtle Beach or Charlotte editions. It really boils down to the first print run where the printing company located in Myrtle Beach included their name on the checklist cards which are the last car in the pack. Maxx removed some cards and added some cards to the set. The printing companies name was removed from the checklist and more cards were printed.
You can see a small five 1988 Maxx wax pack break on my site HERE:

NOTE - PSA has graded over 6,600 1988 Maxx Cards!

Card # 1 has 4 different variations. First they either have 10 or 100 in the yellow starburst. The 100 was only available in the factory sets.
The second is the price to buy a factory set from Maxx. It is either $19.95 (Myrtle Beach) or $21.45 (Charlotte).

    Day 68 - 1988 Maxx Set

    Card #3 - J.D. McDuffie (December 5, 1938 - August 11, 1991) Age 52

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 27 years (1963 - 1991) in 683 races with 0 Wins, 12 Top Fives, 106 Top Tens and 1 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: Race car drivers put their life on the line every time they get in that car unlike Baseball, Football, Basketball and Hockey players.

McDuffie was involved in an accident on the fifth lap of the 1991 Budweiser At The Glen race at Watkins Glen International. On the straight between the Esses and the Loop-Chute, at 170 mph, McDuffie and Jimmy Means touched wheels. McDuffie's driver's side outer tie rod end dropped from the front wheel spindle, which caused him to lose control of the position of the right side tire/wheel. Further, the impact caused the front wheel assembly to completely fall off the car, starting a chain reaction that resulted in all of McDuffie's brakes failing. This left him no way of stopping the car or steering it away, and to further complicate matters there was no gravel trap in the corner that McDuffie was headed toward. As a result, McDuffie skidded across the grass and hit the outside retaining wall and tire barrier with such force that the car shot into the air, rotated in mid-air, and then came to rest upside down. Means also crashed into the same corner but was able to slow his vehicle down before the impact; his car went under McDuffie's as it was in mid-air. Means, a fellow independent racer, suffered only minor cuts and bruises in the accident, and got out of his car to check on JD. After peering into McDuffie's car, he began frantically signaling for assistance, and a host of medical personnel and track workers rushed to the scene. The race was delayed for an hour as McDuffie was removed from his car and his car was removed from the infield. Also, the wall that McDuffie and Means struck had to be repaired. As the cars got back on the track and cruised under yellow flag conditions, the media attention turned to Chip Williams, NASCAR's PR director, who disclosed that McDuffie had lost his life in the accident. The 52-year-old was survived by wife Ima Jean, son Jeff (who himself drove in five Winston Cup events), and daughter Linda.

    Day 74 - 1988 Maxx Set

    Card #9 - Atlanta International Raceway (Opened July 31, 1960 - Capacity 125,000)

Atlanta Motor Speedway (formerly Atlanta International Raceway) is a track just outside Hampton, Georgia, twenty miles (32 km) south of Atlanta. It is a 1.54-mile (2.48 km) quad-oval track with a seating capacity of over 125,000. It opened in 1960 as a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) standard oval. In 1994, 46 condominiums were built over the northeastern side of the track. In 1997, to standardize the track with Speedway Motorsports' other two 1.5-mile (2.4 km) ovals, the entire track was almost completely rebuilt. The frontstretch and backstretch were swapped, and the configuration of the track was changed from oval to quad-oval. The project made the track one of the fastest on the NASCAR circuit.

    Day 78 - 1988 Maxx Set

Card #13 - Alabama Thunder aka Talladega Superspeedway (opened September 13, 1969 - Capacity 175,000)

NASCARD Radio.com take away: The track opened on September 13, 1969 costing $4 million. The first race at the new track was unlike any other; all the original drivers abandoned the track because of tire problems which caused Bill France to hire substitute drivers. The first finish was amazing with three cars side by side with the winner being Richard Brickhouse. This track was built for speed.

Buddy Baker was the first driver to test at a speed over 200 mph, with a 200.447 mph lap during testing on March 24, 1970.

The late Benny Parsons was the first driver to qualify at over 200 mph, doing so in 1982 with a speed of 200.176 mph.

    Restrictor Plates:
In May 1987 Bobby Allison, after a blown engine, cut his right-rear tire from the debris while going through the tri-oval portion of the track. The car was vaulted airborne. His car damaged a portion of the frontstretch catch fence, but did not enter the spectator area. NASCAR imposed rule changes to slow the cars after the incident, with a 1988 rule requiring cars running there and at Daytona to use restrictor plates.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: Today is the Daytona 500 and before you is one of the rarest regular issue NASCAR cards. A long time NASCAR card collector and PSA set registry holder created a list of the TOP 25 PSA Graded NASCAR cards. His list was based on Availability, Collectability, Desirability, Possibility of grading PSA 10 and value in the collectible market. This was his highest ranked card and number 1 on his list. Number 2 was the 1983 UNO Earnhardt and
Number 3 was the 1972 STP Richard Petty.

    IMG] >>

Could you post this top 25 list? I would be interested to see what else is on it. Also is there much crossover appeal to Indy and formula one racing? I was wondering what your thoughts are on cards like 1969 panini Mario Andretti? I'm not much of a racing fan but I like to collect the rookie cards of HOFers in all sports. On my racing checklist are petty, Andretti, dale, jeff gordon and schumacher are there any legends that you think should be included that I missed?

    Card # 20 Neil Bonnett (July 30, 1946 - February 11, 1994) Age 47

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 18 years in 362 races with 18 Wins, 83 Top Fives, 156 Top Tens and 20 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: He raced from 1974 - 1993. Neil Bonnett was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. He was part of the "Alabama Gang" that included himself, Red Farmer and the Allison family: father Bobby, brother Donnie and, later, son Davey.

On February 11, 1994, during the first practice session for the 1994 Daytona 500, Bonnett's car suffered a right front tire failure in the track's fourth turn. Bonnett's car hit the outside wall nearly head-on. Bonnett was taken to nearby Halifax Medical Center, but he had died on impact. He is buried in Pleasant Grove's cemetery, Forest Grove Memorial Gardens.

A road called "Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive" in his hometown honors him, along with fellow native Davey Allison, who died a year earlier.

When Brad Keselowski scored Phoenix Racing's first Sprint Cup win 15 years later at the 2009 Aaron's 499, Finch dedicated the win to Bonnett.

    Day 86- 1988 Maxx Set

Card #21- Martinsville Speedway (Capacity 65,000)

NASCARD Radio take away: The track is often referred to as paper clip-shaped and is banked only 12° in the turns. The combination of long straightaways and flat, narrow turns makes hard braking going into turns and smooth acceleration exiting turns a must. The first NASCAR sanctioned event was held on July 4, 1948.
