    Day 30 - 1983 UNO Set (Card 17 of 30)

    Card #17 Tim Richmond (June 7, 1955 - August 13, 1989) Age 34

    -1986-
Richmond joined Hendrick Motorsports in 1986, where he teamed up with veteran crew chief Harry Hyde. It took the team until the middle of the season to gel.
Richmond had suffered a 64-race winless streak that was finally broken at the Van Scoy Diamond Mine 500 at Pocono in June 1986. After two straight second place
finishes at Charlotte and Riverside, Richmond started the Pocono event in third place inside the second row. That race saw a caution for rain with five laps
left before the halfway point. NASCAR wanted the cars to get to the halfway point to make the race official, so the sanctioning body had the drivers slowly
circle the track. It took the drivers 26 minutes to complete the laps, and the rain was so heavy that some drivers had to look out their side windows because
they could not see out their windshields. Two hours later, the track had dried and the race resumed with Richmond in third. After Richmond's car was adjusted
to remove the "push", the car was more to his liking. Because his radio did not work, he was unable to communicate with his crew chief, Hyde, and he made
his final pit stop with 37 laps left. Hyde worried that Richmond had stopped a lap too early to ensure that he would have enough fuel to make it to the end.
After Richmond took the lead with 30 laps left in the race, Dale Earnhardt made up three seconds on Richmond's five-second lead. With four laps to go,
Buddy Arrington spun in a three-car accident. The remaining laps of the race where completed slowly under caution and Richmond took the checkered flag for the victory.
He had led 97 laps, including the final 30, taking his first victory in a Rick Hendrick car.

The tour returned to Pocono a month later, and Richmond battled for another victory in a fog-shortened event. In the final 8-lap sprint, Richmond competed in a
three-car battle with Geoff Bodine and Ricky Rudd. Richmond crossed the finish line beside Rudd, winning the race by 0.05 seconds. He notched four more
victories that season, and over a span of twelve races, Richmond earned three second place finishes, and six wins. The National Motorsports Press Association
named him Co-Driver of the Year with Earnhardt after Richmond accumulated 13 top 5 finishes and 16 in the top 10. He had a career-best 3rd place finish
in points after winning 7 events in 1986, in what was his last full NASCAR season.

    Day 31 - 1983 UNO Set (Card 18 of 30)

    Card #18 Tim Richmond (June 7, 1955 - August 13, 1989) Age 34

Richmond fell ill the day after the 1986 NASCAR annual banquet during a promotional trip to Chicago. He was not well enough to begin the 1987 NASCAR season despite lengthy
hospitalization in Cleveland and further rest at home; when Richmond missed the Daytona 500, his condition was reported as double pneumonia. Media later reported that he
had tested positive for acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

He returned to Pocono for the Miller High Life 500 during the middle of the year. Starting third, he led by the fifth lap and ultimately led 82 laps, including the final 46,
to win the race by eight car-lengths over Bill Elliott. In the middle of the race, Richmond's car suffered gearbox problems. Because he could use only fourth (high) gear, he
had to use that gear to slowly exit the pits. Richmond was emotional after the victory, saying, "I had tears in my eyes when I took the checkered flag. Then every time anyone
congratulated me, I started bawling again."

Richmond earned a victory in the very next race at Riverside, and made his final 1987 start at Michigan International Speedway's Champion Spark Plug 400 that August,
finishing 29th with a blown engine. He resigned from Hendrick Motorsports in September 1987.

Number one in all time wins with 200 races. He has 95 more wins than the number two all time winner (David Pearson). He won the championship 7 times and came in second 6 times. With all these accomplishments he is the nicest guy you will ever meet. He signs for free or for a small donation that goes to fund some charities (Victory Junction Gang Camp). His full signature is a work of art and then he changed it to just "R Petty". He changed it back so I asked him one time why he changed it back and he said to spend more time with the fans. Ask one of the premiere baseball or football guys if they would do that!

    Day 39 - 1983 UNO Set (Card 26 of 30)
    UNO Card #26 Tim Richmond (June 7, 1955 - August 13, 1989) Age 34

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 8 years in 185 races with 13 Wins, 42 Top Fives, 78 Top Tens and 14 starting at the Pole.

    1988 to August 13, 1989
Tim attempted a comeback for the 1988 Daytona 500 in February of 1988 but NASCAR knew something was up and started drug testing drivers. Only Tim had to give a sample for NASCAR to test.
Other drivers thought he was on drugs and complained to NASCAR so they were in a tuff spot. Tim failed the NASCAR drug test just before the Daytona 500 but he also had
another sample sent to an independent screening which passed. There was not enough time to take another sample before the 500 and get back the results.
NASCAR suspended him for testing positive for banned substances. The substances was later identified as Sudafed, a non-prescription over-the-counter allergy medication, and Advil,
an over-the-counter pain reliever. In April 1988, Richmond sued NASCAR over the suspension. Although he retested later that year and was reinstated, he could not find a car to drive.
In his final public appearance in February 1988, Richmond denied that he abused drugs and said that a mistake had been made in his drug test. His suit with NASCAR was settled
out-of-court, the terms sealed. Richmond withdrew into his condo in Florida. There were by then rumors of HIV and AIDS, which he denied. He was later hospitalized in West Palm Beach.
ESPN sent a get-well-soon card to Richmond when it aired the July 1989 NASCAR race at Pocono. The television network showed highlights of Richmond's victory at the track from 1986.

"Tim had Hollywood good looks and the charisma of Tom Cruise," said his friend Dr. Jerry Punch. "There he was in victory lane with the team all around him and beauty queens hanging all
over him. It was important for the people at the hospital to see Tim the way he really was, when he was healthy and handsome and vital, not the way he was as they saw him every day in the hospital."

On August 13, 1989, Richmond died at the age of 34, about two years after his final NASCAR race. He was buried in Ashland, Ohio.

The secrecy surrounding the circumstance of his death caused speculation for several days. At the time, Punch stated that Richmond had been hospitalized due to a motorcycle accident,
though it is unlikely that Richmond had the strength to ride a motorcycle during his last months. Ten days after his death, on August 23, the Richmond family held a press conference to reveal that Richmond died from complications from AIDS, which he acquired from an unknown woman. Richmond's physician, Dr. David Dodson, said: "There's no way of knowing who that woman was.
Tim was a celebrity with a lot of charisma, a handsome guy. He naturally attracted a lot of women."

Punch later claimed that more than 90 drivers and personnel underwent HIV testing in the wake of Richmond's death.

He raced from 1975 until his death at the first race of 2001, at the Daytona 500, on the final lap as Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (his son) both driving Dale Earnhardt, Inc. cars finished first and second. Dale Earnhardt was trying to hold off the other drivers from making a run at the two Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) cars.

He is tied with Richard Petty for 7 championships (1980, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994). He came in second in championship points 3 times. He finished in the top ten 63% of the time. That dale 83 uno card is one of the few racing cards I own. Tough rookie card to track down of one of the all time greats. There seem to be quite a few of these in a 9 or 10. Seems strange to me for odd ball card. I wonder if there was a big find recently or something like that. I doubt that many people really hoarded these and took great care of them back in 83. I'd be interested if anyone has any info.

"I wonder if there was a big find recently or something like that."

You are correct. These came to light in 1990 to one of the Racing Card Price guides. A person showed them to the magazine and there were ads in the magazine for a few years. The magazine contacted UNO but UNO did not have any numbers to give them and the only way was for them to dig through their records which they were not going to do. That person was David Chobat who was a NASCAR photographer and I am guessing took the pictures. The article mentions that he had a few hundred sets squired away. David Chobat passed away in the summer of 2004.

In the summer of 2006 the Chobat estate blew out all of the sets he had and uncut sheets. I know the time frame because I missed some of the sheets because I was busy with the birth of my daughter. A few people got a few sheets put one person purchased the rest of the sheets and sets. That is why there are so many high grade cards.

Disclaimer: I did not get the sets. He sells them every once an awhile to keep the set price stable.

    Day 44 - 1985 SportStar Sticker Set (1 of 9)
    Recap:
    1970 Dragstrips (2 NASCAR cards)
    1972 STP (11 Cards)
    1983 UNO (30 Cards)

    1985 SportStar Photo-Graphics Stickers
These were put out by SportStar Photo-Graphics which was a company owned by Ray Mann. There is very little information about these but they are smaller versions of the placemats that the Racing Pictorial Magazine (Ray Mann) sold. These measure about 2 x 3 with blank sticker backs.

Update: Forgot to add that some of the old Racing Price guides (Before Beckett entered in 1996) state that 1000 of each sticker was produced.

I like to see the andretti card included in this thread. I don't follow racing at all... But you don't need to recognize names like petty Dale, and andretti. I guess since andretti was more successful as an indy driver he isn't as collectible. Seems like most race card collectors focus on nascar. I still think his 69 panini card is a great rookie card that could be had for less than 25 bucks.

    Card - David Pearson (December 22, 1934 - Present)

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 27 years in 574 races with 105 Wins, 301 Top Fives, 366 Top Tens and 113 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: This is the first cardsticker of David Pearson whose nickname was "The Silver Fox". He raced from 1960 to 1986. He was named 1960 Rookie of the year and won 3 championships (1966, 1968 & 1969). David Pearson ran a part time Cup schedule the last 17 years (1970 - 1986) after winning his third championship in 1969. Fifty Two percent (52%) of the time he showed up to a Cup race he finished in the TOP 5 compared to Richard Petty's 46.9% TOP 5 finishes! He is second in all time wins with 105 and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest drivers. He was inducted in to the NASCAR Hall of Fame with the class of 2011.

    One of my favorite stories:
“The name Silver Fox really applies because David was a little bit prematurely gray and absolute slyness on the track – just exceedingly smart,” said Hall of Fame motorsports writer Tom Higgins, who proceeded to tell a story about how Buddy Baker and Pearson went door-to-door at Darlington one year. It seems Baker was doing all he could to hang with Pearson. As the two battled side-by-side, Baker looked over and couldn’t believe what he was seeing – Pearson lighting a cigarette.

“That absolutely blew Buddy’s mind,” said Higgins. “I asked Pearson a little bit later if he did things like that on purpose and he was chewing that gum and his eyes were sparkling and he said, ‘Well, maybe.’ But he was a very, very smart driver.”

Raced 35 years in 1184 races with 200 Wins, 555 Top Fives, 712 Top Tens and 123 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: This is the third cardsticker of "The King". He raced 35 years (1958 - 1992) and was the 1959 Rookie of the Year.

Petty is a second generation driver. His father, Lee Petty, won the first Daytona 500 in 1959 and was also a 3 time NASCAR champion. Richard's son, Kyle Petty, is also a well-known NASCAR driver. Richard's grandson, Adam Petty, was killed in an accident at New Hampshire International Speedway on May 12, 2000, five weeks after the death of Lee. Meanwhile, Adam's brother Austin works on day-to-day operations of the Victory Junction Gang Camp, a Hole in the Wall Gang camp established by the Pettys after Adam's death. Petty married his wife Lynda in 1958 and they have four children – Kyle Petty, Sharon Petty Farlow, Lisa Petty Luck and Rebecca Petty Moffit – and 12 grandchildren. The family still resides in Petty's home town of Level Cross, North Carolina and operates Richard Petty Motorsports. The Richard Petty Museum is in nearby Randleman, North Carolina. Throughout Petty's career, but especially during his prime, Petty was known to stand for hours – backed against a fence, signing autographs to everyone who asked.

    Day 53 - 1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS (1 of 13)

    1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS Bobby Allison (December 3, 1937 - Present)

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 25 years in 718 races with 85 Wins, 336 Top Fives, 446 Top Tens and 58 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: This 13-card set was produced by SportStars, Inc. (Ray Mann). The cards are a little larger than standard size, measuring 2 3/4" x 3 1/2" which makes them harder to find in Mint condition. These cards were sold in three card packs (zip lock bags) at trackside and in souvenir shops at the various speedways. The cards have a white border and picture both the driver and his car. The backs contain only the driver name, birth date and place, hometown and current car. They also have a "SportStars Photo-Graphics" copyright on the back. Four cards appear to be in shorter supply than the others: Bodine, Earnhardt, Gant and Richmond. All of the cards are unnumbered and to my knowledge are the first NASCAR trading cards that were sold as a collectable.

If I may go back so far as to comment on the Day 1 post. In 1966 Darel Dieringer won the Southern 500 at Darlington driving Bud Moore's 1966 Mercury Cyclone # 16. This was a big win for Moore and Dieringer and an upset for the factory teams.

    Day 55 - 1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS (3 of 13)

    1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS Neil Bonnett (July 30, 1946 - February 11, 1994) Age 47

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 18 years in 362 races with 18 Wins, 83 Top Fives, 156 Top Tens and 20 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: I like this card because of the uncorrected error on the card. The drivers use cars for photo shoots and used for displays at promotions with sponsors. Notice the top of the car number does not match the side door number, oops!

Neil Bonnett raced from 1974 - 1993 and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. He was part of the "Alabama Gang" that included himself, Red Farmer and the Allison family: father Bobby, brother Donnie and, later, son Davey.

On February 11, 1994, during the first practice session for the 1994 Daytona 500, Bonnett's car suffered a right front tire failure in the track's fourth turn. Bonnett's car hit the outside wall nearly head-on. Bonnett was taken to nearby Halifax Medical Center, but he had died on impact. He is buried in Pleasant Grove's cemetery, Forest Grove Memorial Gardens.

A road called "Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive" in his hometown honors him, along with fellow native Davey Allison, who died a year earlier.

When Brad Keselowski scored Phoenix Racing's first Sprint Cup win 15 years later at the 2009 Aaron's 499, Finch dedicated the win to Bonnett.

    1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS Bill Elliott (October 8, 1955 - Present)

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 36 years in 826 races with 44 Wins, 175 Top Fives, 320 Top Tens and 55 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: First sorry for the late post today. I was at the Charlotte show all day and just got home to the computer. It was also great to meet some of the PSA board folks as well at the show. I am going to skip one card in the set and post that Sunday and post the Bill Elliott tonight.

This is Bill Elliott’s first card who started Cup racing in 1976 and continues to run Cup races. He nick names are "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville" and "Million Dollar Bill".

In 1985 he won the inaugural Winston Million that year, a one-million-dollar award paid to any driver who could win three out of the four top races of the season (the Daytona 500, Winston 500, Coca-Cola 600, and Southern 500). This feat earned him the nickname "Million Dollar Bill" and also helped make him the first NASCAR driver to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine.

He won the Cup Championship in 1988 and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. His son, Chase Elliott (B 1995), is a development driver for Hendrick Motorsports.

After The King, Awesome Bill is my next favorite all time driver. I remember the Talladega race that he needed to win to keep his Winston Million hopes alive. He had a loose oil fitting early in the race. He pitted under green and lost almost 2 laps to the field. He came back out, passed the leaders under green to make up the first lap then pulled away and passed the leaders again under the same green flag to take the lead and eventually win. One of the most amazing driving feats I have ever seen.

    Day 57 - 1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS (5 of 13)

    1986 SportStar Photo-GRAPHICS Dale Earnhardt (April 29, 1951 - February 18, 2001) Age 49

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 27 years in 676 races with 76 Wins, 281 Top Fives, 428 Top Tens and 22 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: Today is the Daytona 500 and before you is one of the rarest regular issue NASCAR cards. A long time NASCAR card collector and PSA set registry holder created a list of the TOP 25 PSA Graded NASCAR cards. His list was based on Availability, Collectability, Desirability, Possibility of grading PSA 10 and value in the collectible market. This was his highest ranked card and number 1 on his list. Number 2 was the 1983 UNO Earnhardt and
Number 3 was the 1972 STP Richard Petty.

This is one of the short printed (SP) cards in the set and very rare. High grades in this set are also rare due to the larger size and lack of supplies to hold the larger card in 1986. These were not available is what we would call normal wax packs but in zip-lock bags that held 3 cards sold at the tracks. Uncut sheets have been seen but their authenticity has been questioned. These sheets are laminated which would never yield a high grade card if cut up due to the laminated surface.

I have been told that these cards were a bye product of the Place Mats that were also created by SportStar Photo-Graphics. The printer had empty space on the paper when the place mats were run so the top edge of the paper was used to print these.

There are variations of the card backs with either no address or a PO Box for SportStar Photo-Graphics.
