Anyone out there like classic head gold?

I've never owned one but I think they are very attractive coins. Any opinions out there on the $5 or 2 and a half libs.

Neat coins. These are the earliest U.S. gold coins that are still affordable by the average collector and for that reason they have a lot of history.

    I do!

But what's not to like about the classic head design. I came real close to owning a $5 classic head. Wish I would have come up just a little bit to make the deal happen. I just wasn't confident enough on the grade. One of my dreams as a collector is to put together a quarter eagle type set, I expect the Classic head (1934-1939) will be my next addition to that set. I already have the lib and the Indian, but those are the easy ones.

I currently own three pieces and have had some others over the years, but I have never liked them as a collectible series.

I love Classic Head gold and have considered forming a date set of the $2.50 and $5.00 coins. I've never gotten around to it however. Classic Head Gold has been of interest to me for over 40 years.

BTW that's a super 1839-O quarter eagle, earlyAUrun. image

Here are my two biggest Classic Head gold coins. They cover the Charlotte and Dahlonega holes in my “all mints” collection.

Absolutely. Attractive design. Also, this is one gold series that appears to still have a fair number of coins with nice original color, that have not been dipped and stripped.

I like the quarter eagles a lot, but not so much the half eagles for some reason. Never owned either though.

The 1838-C quarter eagle is one of my favorite coins of any type.

I think the common dates are a good bargain among early American numismatics.

I bought this little girl on total whim at a very reasonable price at a show from a dealer who had just acquired it. I've since sold it to
another forum member, but then shortly afterward I picked up a $5 Classic Head. These are the only US gold
    coins I've ever owned.

I like the series and have a Redbook set of the $5's, with a few varieties. Classic Head gold is the only nineteenth century gold set that can be realistically completed by the average (income) collector. Prices were run up a few years ago from a dealer who was hoarding and promoting the coins. The half eagle C and D mint are always tough, not rare but always in demand. The most frustrating part of collecting the series is that maybe one in twenty coins is original, the rest are dipped, cleaned, or otherwise messed with.

I used to collect quarter eagle classic head gold, which is more numismatically interesting and challenging. However, I can't collect everything and traded/sold the set to start an early gold collection.

I like em especially in mint state grades. I once sold a 39-D in MS-64 and if I remember correctly I sold it for under $25K too. I don't remember it coming back into the market either image Hmmmm.

I only have this one, and I saved the photo from the web site of J.J.Teaparty, from whom I bought the thing. It is my second most valuable coin, after my AU55 1911-D quarter eagle. I had just gotten back from a coin show, so I had just blown all my funds for the next few months. They got this coin at that very same show. As an XF grade, it was priced accordingly, less than $5000, making it a once in three years or so buying opportunity. So, I hacked into my collection and sold off coins I knew I'd actually miss. But, I've got this one, and the ones I sold in trade are easier to find again than one of these.

Wow this thread is lasting longer than I expected. I like the look of the classic head but would not be interesting in collecting it as a series. Thanks for the compliments on my 39-o QE to BillJones, deltadimeman and cameron12x. It is really a nice example that I bought as a type coin.

You know maybe we should have a forum for "Lost and Found" coins. This could be the first "Poster Child".
Carry on with the thread. I like classic head gold and especially seeing coins in the rightful owner's hands.

TwoSides2aCoin--I would definitely second your idea of a "Lost and Found" forum.

A VERY significant (at least for me) part of my collection was stolen and this WAS my most valuable coin.

Definitely a coin with beautiful designs on both sides. I saw a mint state 1839 half eagle close up at the B&M in downtown Chicago some years ago and I fell in love with it.
