The birth of a stacker - with a picture

So ... as some of you know, my oldest son (Tyler) visited over the Thanksgiving week, and it was a wonderful time. We fixed up his motorcycle, went fishing, visited his sister (my middle child) a few hours away, went surfing, and just generally enjoyed each others time.

I felt very well rested after a week off, and I think he did too.

But, something happened along the way (near the end of his visit).

Tyler has been around coins (because of his crazy dad) since he was born (I started collecting about a year and a half before he came into the world). Numismatics never really took completely, although someone on this board has (or had) the 1928 PCGS AU58 Peace Dollar that was the one-time centerpiece of his collection.

Anyway, he’s a very smart kid … ex-USN Nuclear MM … currently working for a very large corporation and being treated very well. I could ramble about my son for many pages, but let’s just say he is also a very close friend and I am very proud of him in many, many ways.

How exactly we got on the subject of Gold and Silver stacking I can not quite pin-point, but once we did he was soaking up anything I could share like a sponge. The farther we went, the more questions he asked, the more he wanted to know, and the more he liked the idea of having a stack of silver.

He stayed up late and read and asked more questions. He kept on going even after I was exhausted. LOL image

So, on Monday, after he touched down, safely at home, what did he do? He went out to the local B&M, introduced himself and asked a few pertenant questions, and then bought a baby stack. I had given him the ASE in the picture (a 1988, his birth year) as a start in case he decided to move forward. He even went out grocery shopping so he could eat out less (which could be a healthy thing since he eats out a lot) and have a little more for future stacking adventures!

I think he said he paid 33.5 for each of the bars and 23x Face for the roll of dimes.

I think I helped create a stacker, and hopefully a smart one at that! image

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

  • Congrats! That is such a cool thing to share between father and son. For me it went in the other direction, I met with my father and somehow chatted about PMs and soon after he began his stacking... Myself being '82 and passing the silver eagle of my year to him as his start...

I look forward to meeting up with him and showing each other the new pieces we've been collecting. Good time so far and moony more to have...

Awesome story Todd, thanks for sharing. I love hearing stories like this as I am doing the same with our daughter and some of her friends are even getting into it now.
I crack up (inside) when they walk into the room when I am sorting out a recent purchase on the table and they all just stop, their eyes get real big, and they all say "WHOAAAA Mr. K, where did you get all that?" image

I then proceed to talk it up with them letting them know that if they work hard, this is something they can start buying with their hard earned $.

    Cool story!

My daughter loves going to the shops with me. Her stack consists of mostly sterling in form of jewelry. Hey it is still silver and usually at melt.

Thanks for taking the time to post a great story and nothing like your kids growing up & becoming 'friend' in addition to parent:child relationship. image
