This is a 19th century strike of the Daniel Morgan medal. The Continental Congress voted to award a gold medal to General Daniel Morgan for his leadership in the Battle of the Cowpens during the American Revolutionary War. Augustin Dupre, who also made the dies for the Libertas Americana medal, designed this piece as well.
In the late 1830s the family of Daniel Morgan asked for help from the Federal Government. The original gold medal that had been awarded to Morgan had been stolen from a bank in Pittsburgh, and they wanted a replacement. There was an act of Congress that authorized a new medal in 1836. The silver medal that was in George Washington’s set, which is now in the Massachusetts Historical Society collection, was sent to Paris. There J.-J. Barre executed a new set of dies. The medals struck from Barre’s dies were virtually identical to the original pieces. One of those pieces is shown below.

This is an awesome piece. Most collectors have never seen one of these and I am working on an article about the history of these items (which I will most likely post here!). They are very rare (though a bit more common than the 7-8 known that Rulau suggested in 1998 maybe 10-12 known). I have handled two, one which was a monster XF/AU full original silvering and a AG3 which is how they normally come.
Fantastic piece. Congrats on owning it!

Here's some of my favorites.
And I love this image of Marianne.
I might as well add my Portland centennial piece. I try not to look at stuff like this in the marketplace because so much of it is very neat!
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
