1793 Chain Cent; 1794 Silver Dollar; 1795 Eagle - Choose One

If you could only own one of the following, which one would it be and why;

1793 1C Chain America Large Cent in MS63
1794 $1 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar in XF45
1795 $10 Eagle (13 Leaves) in MS63

I think the PCGS Price Guide value for each of the coins in the stated grades is roughly the same.

I choose the 1794 dollar in XF - chain cents can be had in lower grades. I don't think there are nearly as many 1794 dollars around. I don't know much about gold. In fact, I haven't seen a 1794 silver dollar in a long time in any grade. Almost every show has a chain cent or two albeit in lower grades.

As a whole, 1794 dollars are much more rare than 1795 eagles or chains. In the last 20 years of attending shows and auctions, I have seen maybe 20 or so high grade (AU or better) 1795 eagles, a similar number of AU or better chains, and two or three XF or better 1794 dollars.

A truly choice original XF45 1794 $1 would be pretty special! image

A Choice Mint State Chain Cent, so long as it was not an S-4 (periods variety), would be my choice. The reason why I would not want (another) S-4 is that among the Chains, that piece provides the most 'civilized" view of Ms. Liberty. The first the varieties are more crude and interest me more at this point. The Chain cents were the first regular issue coins that were produced at the first mint, and for that reason they have a specail place in history. The 1792 half disme was the first regular issue U.S. coin, but it not made at the first mint.

As for the others I would rather have a high grade 1795 half eagle than the eagle. The half eagle was the first U.S. gold coin since it was struck starting in July while the eagle was introduced in September.

The 1794 dollar, which is the one coin I don't own that is on your list, is a very important piece. The trouble is if I were to buy one in EF-45, I would be very picky. Many of those coins are not well struck at all, and I'd be looking for one that was half way decent.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I would pick the 1794 $1. It is the rarest of the three (Chain cents are downright common), and I have a predilection for lightly circulated coins. It would also likely be the easiest sell if I ever needed the money.

I love chain cents, and would love to own a choice MS example.

I'm in the chain cent group. However, it is not an easy choice and any one of those would be a joy to own.

    I would choose a 1793 1C Chain America Large Cent in MS63.

High grade Chain Cents are WOW coins to most collectors.

The 1794 is a close second choice, but in XF 45 it probably won't have the eye appeal and WOW factor of a Chain in 63.

    goodness, that took some research

between the 3 i let the money make my decision, not my favorite coin

    the 1794 Dollar wins

there doesn't seem to be many in unc and comparing an xf45 to 2 uncs is rather difficult

the 1794 dollar has popularity and notoriety but the xf grade probably hurts overall value, even if it were a top pop

majority of people pay crazy prices for unc version of a coin not a 45, but the silver dollar has major popularity amongst millionaire collectors

also it is reportedly the scarcest of the 3 coins for total amount of coins as survived

although we aren't talking die marriages or grade census which leaves a lot of blue sky for the choice between the 3

    <--- look what's behind the mask! - cool link 1/NO ~ 2/NNP ~ 3/NNC ~ 4/CF ~ 5/PG ~ 6/Cert ~ 7/NGC 7a/NGC pop~ 8/NGCF ~ 9/HA archives ~ 10/PM ~ 11/NM ~ 12/ANACS cert ~ 13/ANACS pop - report fakes 1/ACEF ~ report fakes/thefts 1/NCIS - Numi-Classes SS ~ Bass ~ Transcribed Docs NNP - clashed coins - error training - V V mm styles -

  • I'll pick the Eagle. It's the most beautiful of the three coins, although I will admit the Chain Cents are the most interesting.

Yeah, I'd take the large, beautiful Liberty, small eagle, gold coin

then the 1794 dollar. The chain cents never did much for me, other than needing one for type, i don't think they're very attractive

If it was an AMERI., I would not hesitate to choose that one. Otherwise, It would depend on whether or not I actually liked one more over the other. The dollar has always been on my wish list, as has the chain. Honestly the Eagle doesn't do it for me. If I had to choose gold, I think a nice MS 1820's half Eagle would be the one (except a '23, they're so commonimage).

A nice, large eagle would be my choice. Early eagles are not common, but flowing hair dollars, usually 1795 are available.

Chain cents just have not done it for me.

Put me down for the XF 1794 dollar. Big ol' hefty silver dollars are just downright cool, and this one is downright rare, and would probably garner more attention come time to sell than a 1795 Eagle. I think I would enjoy a chocolaty, problem-free VF-XF chain cent just as much as an MS63.
  • IrishMikeyIrishMikey Posts: 1,561 ✭✭✭
Chain cent for me. Never had the chance to pick up any of the 1793 large cents when I was putting together
a set in Fine condition. Sure, the MS-63 would look out of place in a F-12 to F-15 set, but I would suffer through
    it.

Love those that responded "Chain cent" as long as it was a particular variety. Believe me, I am not picking on
them -- I am rather envious of their early copper knowledge.
  • CoinJunkieCoinJunkie Posts: 8,772 ✭✭✭✭✭
The Eagle, without a doubt. If I could get the dollar in MS63, the decision would be much tougher.
Chain cents are historically interesting, but copper just doesn't excite me.
  • I would prefer the $10, but when time to sell the $1 has more of a base IMO.
  • Wow, what a choice. My first thought was the eagle. Then the Chain Cent. I've always liked the design, not that I think it is beautiful or anything, I just like the concept. So the chain cent crept into first choice. Then reading the replies made me wonder why the dollar wasn't higher on my list?

OK Eagle is first, Chain second and Dollar is last.
  • Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the replies.... Next week I will count the votes and see who is the winner. Just remember though, the decision should be made on the basis of the particular coin in the stated grade.... If not the 1794 $1 in MS63 would be the clear winner!

    Hi All!

    Thanks for voting. The results so far (ignoring ambiguous comments) are;

    1793 1C - 6
    1794 $1 - 10
    1795 $10 - 9

The 1794 $1 came out of the blocks very fast. The 1795 $10 was getting hammered early on, but came back with a vengeance.

    Aha! A Heritage person!

Stewart, Your Jan 2012 auction lists a 1793 Chain Cent in AU53. However, when I click on the lot, the detailed lot page lists it as a Sheldon 2 in MS63 Pop 1/0? WOW!

Good thing I came back to this thread. image

I have not looked at the coin, but everything I see other than the pop figures indicates that the coin is AU53. I have no idea why the pop figures show a grade of 63, but it appears to be a website bug and I will let the appropriate people know.

That having been said, it looks like there are some very cool early cents in that auction, and I'll need to put on my coin weenie hat, bother Mark Borckardt and take a look. image

I owned a 1795 9 Leaf $10 in MS-61 ( It's the one in the Heritage archive that sold for 175K around 12 or so years ago ) and I betcha that one upgraded. Sure would like to have that one back. image

Wish I had images. If I recall correctly the images in the cataloigue were black and white and as you can see in the archives there aren't any imagesimage

    1794 dollar, hands down, because:

    1. I'm a dollar guy.
    2. It's the biggest.

The gold would be my second choice because:
    1. It's gold.
    2. It's bigger than the cent.
    When in doubt, don't.
