Very nice sub! Congrats on the Montague.

Bravo on the Montague and a nice, quick, sub overall. You have some nice hits there. It does give you an idea on how hard it is to hit a 10 on a mini as well.

Good luck on the rest. Looking forward to hearing how he Brett, Yount and Ryan do.

That Montague is bananas. Don't let it go for less than 1K!
  • Got some more cards popping today. These were the star cards.

    NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1975 TOPPS MINI 223 ROBIN YOUNT
    NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1975 TOPPS MINI 228 GEORGE BRETT
NEAR MINT 7 1975 TOPPS MINI 500 NOLAN RYAN
MINT 9 1975 TOPPS MINI 600 ROD CAREW

Very happy with the Carew and Brett. Disappointed in the Ryan & Yount. For sure thought I had a 9 with that Yount. Oh well, will post scans as soon as I have the cards back.

Great pop, Ryan!! I know you are disappointed in the Yount but the Carew in PSA 9 is an awesome card!

Grats on the grades. You did really well overall. The Yount looked nice, but the Brett did not look like an 8, so it tends to even out.

Don't know what the other two 9s look like, but I can't imagine either looking nicer yhan that one--full sized and terrific registration, too.

While my #405 Montague doesn't rub the holder at both ends (top to bottom), it is 80mm and has excellent color and very well centered front and back. The best part..... I paid $26 for mine. I picked it up near the start of my PSA Graded Set.

This latest example is no doubt an extremely fine example. Very well centered, good color, everything a PSA 9 card should have.

I have a few questions about the card. Is there a very faint black line at the top right of the card that may very well cover the entire top of the card? When you get to the left top of the card is there a hint of yellow that so often appears more obvious on other examples of Red/Yellow cards?

My example has the same very tiny black dot on the lower left in the yellow.

These are extremely minor points on this example, which is why there should be no question why it belongs in a PSA 9 holder. There are good reasons why so few PSA 9's of this card exist.

I definitely wouldn't mind having this example in my set, if I didn't already have an acceptable example, congrats on the find. image

Minimaster, how about posting your PSA 9 Montague card here so we can do a side by side of 2 of the 3 9s?

That card is real nice, too, but I give yours the edge, Ryan, because of the slight tilt on Jim's example. Both cards are very sharp, though!

  • Thanks Tim. +1 on seeing the scan of Mini Masters. Would love to know where the 3 montegue's stack up.

I wanted to post a scan of the Brett & Yount I got back from PSA today that I pulled from my 15 pack rip a few weeks back. I still can't believe the Yount landed in an 8. The only flaws I see with this card are the top right corner, small pink mark on his neck, and small light mark above the first E in Brewers. Centering is actually within range of a 10. Am I missing something? (white specs on the scan are from the scanner)

When you put those two cards side by side like that, you can truly see what is meant when people say not all cards assigned a particular grade are equal. The Brett is a lower end 8, imo, but the Yount is very sharp. I'm thinking the top right corner is the culprit, and there is an ever so slight tilt, but I would definitely review that card, as it is a textbook example of what the half grade is meant to signify, in that is a card that should at least be NM-MT+, or an 8.5.

The Brett is slightly off centered so that might be the reason for the 8 grade? The Yount looks
sharp and I would have it reviewed like Tim said.

The Brett is a gift 8, take it and run. The Yount is far better, crack it and try again, nothing to lose and a whole lot of upside.

  • I also would love to see a scan of MiniMasters Montague Psa 9 to see how it stacks up.
  • While we're waiting for MiniMaster to post a scan of his Montague, I figured I'd rip another pack of minis image

This was from a different source than my other packs that I ripped last month, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Lots of green/yellows in this pack. Here's the 4 best, including a full size Claude. Chance on an 8 on that Claude? Any hope of a 9 on the others?

I would expect that they would all receive 7's due to being centered low. In addition, the Washington has the commonly found faded yellow-on-green print defect on the left side that alone would likely hold it to a 7. The best chance for an 8 would be the Bahnsen followed by the Mason and Perry in that order. I think all are centered too low for straight 9's.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,698 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'd agree with Nick's assessment in that centering is a bit low, though I like the Mason better than the Bahnsen for a PSA 8. Perry looks sharp, too.

I'm pretty pumped up right now. I finally received my first Gem-Mint 10. The card is #91 Dick Green. I won it in one of those set break auctions on eBay a few months back for $1.63. It was one of only 2 that I won. I remember stumbling on the auctions in the last minutes and just throwing out some low ball bids on like 12 of them that looked really nice - I got blown away on the other 10. I'm also excited about receiving a 9 on the #107 Barr. It's not a terribly difficult card, but tough enough in 9. I bought it at a local card shop last fall along with the Lowenstein that received an 8.5. The shop owner had near set of them in an album, and I cherry picked about 20 or so cards out of it.

Of note is the Lockwood N6. That card is just barely short. I guess they are still not consistently grading those, and I'm not sure why. I've been seeing the natural shorts in holders on eBay quite a bit lately with most having that thin yellow or black line at the top (as seen in ryanseven's scan of the Mason posted earlier today) and most having a recent cert. number. Although the Lockwood is short, it doesn't have that thin yellow or black line. Perhaps they need to see that line to feel comfortable enough to holder it? I'm not sure. That's the second time I've received an N6 on that card. I'll retire it to my raw set. BTW, I'm still struggling to get an 8 or above on green/yellows and red/yellows. I'm hitting 8's on like 10 percent of those the last couple of years. But, I do have a really nice Tommy Davis I purchased raw on eBay a few weeks ago that I will be submitting before the end of the month. Hope springs eternal.

Thanks guys! Yes, it felt great, and it has given me the boost I needed to keep going on improving my set.
  • Ok guys. Finally got poppage on my large sub with the bulk of my minis that I posted here last month.

Overall I had 22 9's, 3 8.5's, and 37 8's. I ended up with 5 N6 (min size) and 4 others that were < 8 out of 71 cards submitted. I'm very pleased with the results especially with some of the tough red/yellow cards. Got a 9 Burleson & Lockwood, both super low pop and several other 8s like Kusick, McEnaney, Burleson #2. I threw in 4 others I had lying around at the end of the order and was happy with those results too. I pulled that Rickey Henderson Elite card out of a pack back when I was 13. Although I'm a little bummed I couldn't score a 10 and 5 of those red/yellows came back N6, great poppage always makes the weekend better. I'm off to a local show here this weekend to hopefully score some more minis. Will report back later this weekend if I was successful.

    Great job!
  • Awesome sub!! Did i miss Minimasters scan of his Psa 9 Montague??
  • Just got back from the local card show with a nice batch of raw minis. One of the dealers had a box of commons that he had since he was a kid. Original owner. He wanted $.50 each. I looked through all 1500 and picked up 30. Here are some quick photos of the tougher commons that I pulled. All cards measure 80 mm. I measured the questionable ones image I'm thinking several of these are 8 worthy. No 9s from the bunch, but for $20 it was a great deal.

Wow great job INDY! Also, nice pick ups Ryan...if that C. Johnson scores an 8 I'll pay your price! Are you unloading your Montague 9? I believe I have the MiniDuff 9 (slightly tilted) yours is much stronger.

  • Latest sub got delivered yesterday and I finally got around to going through the cards tonight. Wanted to post a scan of the some of "red/yellow gold" (credit Tim) that I found in these packs. Out of the 26 packs, I pulled 2 Lockwoods (1 PSA 8, 1 PSA 9), 2 Burlesons (1 PSA 8, 1 PSA 9), 1 Fergosi PSA 8, 1 McEnaney PSA 8, 1 Kusick PSA 8, and of course 1 Montague PSA 9. Out of all of these packs, I didn't pull a single green/yellow card. Either those were in the other 10 packs that I didn't get from this box or this box was comprised of certain sheets and not the ones with green/yellow.

I wanted to share a scan of the Burlesons, Lockwood and Kusick with the group.

Henry - yes, I might be interested in selling that Montague. Make me an offer image

Nice job on subbing all of those! That pack rip really worked out well for you!! Also, great find on the raw. The one that stands out, as noted by Henry, is the C. Johnson. The only thing that might hold it back from an 8 is the missing black ink on the top of "Astros." I got nailed on that on an otherwise perfect Tanana, which received a 7. Most of the others appear iffy on achieving grades of 8 or higher. They seem centered a little too low to me. Also, I would remeasure that Bonds just to be sure. It looks short to me, or perhaps the photo is just slightly distorted. In addition to the Johnson, I would say the best chances for 8's would be the Bonds (if it's 80 mm), Gibson, and Martinez. Good luck if you decide to sub those!

Thanks Henry! And, if you're back in the pond, leave a few red/yellows and green/yellows swimming for me, lol.
  • LOL - you guys know I can never leave the minis...just took a vacation as I sold off much of my earlier sets. I will probably keep focusing on 1975-85 which were the years of my collecting youth...my mini sets will probably be buried with me King Tut style image
Ryan, I have never been an envious or jealous man, but HOLY SMOKES are you kidding me? You walk in new and hit a 9 on Montague, Lockwood and Burleson? You hit a SUPERSHEET. These cards probably came from one set of sheets which cut the red/yellows nicely. How rare is that! That is right up there with Jim's super raw set a few years ago.
Looks like the C. Johnson, Gullett, Tanana red/yellows are becoming relatively more difficult. It is funny how this goes. I used to think the Burleson was afflicted like a rich drunk sailor in a Thai whorehouse. I am now convinced the Gullett/Tanana/C. Johnson are equally difficult.
I don't have time to peruse ebay lately - lmk if a Gullett 8 pops

Hey Tim, I don't even want to hear about what was snagged from my boxes image To be honest, there is a good chance that the cards Ryan broke were also from some boxes I sold the past year or two.

BTW Ryan, that Kusick 8 is one of the best I have seen! If the corners are sharp I would review that over and over...

Henry, I tore through 3 of the 4 packs I got~saving the last for my unopened collection because it was MINT. Centering was all over the place, as expected, but there were at least a couple really nicely centered cards in each pack. Lots of star power in my 3 packs--Yount, Rose, Aaron and Perry--though all were OC. Still, the Yount in PSA 9OC will pay for at least one pack, LOL..The 71 MVP card was the best of the bunch--a real blazer, beautifully centered, great color and razor sharp. At first blush, it appears a viable candidate for a gem mint grade. Here are some scans:

  • Nice star power there Tim! That 71 MVP looks like a gem and you might have a shot at an 8 with that Alou.

Thanks, Ryan! Exactly my thoughts. Even though the stars were OC, it was a fun rip, and a nice way to quicken the pulse for a second or two when that ROBIN YOUNT name first slides into view, LOL..

  • Well... I decided to make a major push into my new found mini obsession. I saw the PWCC auction for a complete set of mostly PSA 8 minis with about 1/3 PSA 7s. This was one of Henry's sets that he consigned, I believe. I figured adding this to my existing start of the set from the super box I ripped where 50% of the cards from that box graded at PSA 8 or higher, would be a good plan. I could sell the extras and upgrade the set over time. I didn't think I'd have a prayer of winning it when I set my snipe bid earlier today. Well, I did!

I sold the majority of my Nolan Ryan Topps set earlier today, including some I consigned with PWCC that I was very pleased with the final prices. I figured, why not reinvest those funds in some more minis! image Can't wait to get these cards in hand later this week.

Here's a link to the auction.

I don't think he is a member here but I have dealt with him a few times with no issues.

First Henry, now all the dominoes fall, LOL..

    Congrats, Ryan, on the purchase!

Grats on the purchase. I had been watching it all along thinking of parting it out or starting a new set myself, but passed at the last second. Haven't been feeling great and didn't want to get tied up with a project that I wasn't sure I could finish any time soon. I'm glad it went to a good home here.

The news reporter part set is a nice one. I have sold him a bunch of the cards he is offering. I haven't looked closely at the rest, so there could be issues, but he was never shy about buying a good card and paying fairly for it.

I had a small sub pop today.

    The good....

    5 1 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1975 TOPPS MINI 647 CLAUDELL WASHINGTON
    1 1 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1975 TOPPS MINI 322 ED GOODSON
    3 1 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1975 TOPPS MINI 400 DICK ALLEN

    The bad....

4 1 NEAR MINT 7 1975 TOPPS MINI 564 TOMMY DAVIS (Will be cracked out and sent back for a second opinion before the month is out.)

    And the ugly....

2 1 EXCELLENT-MINT 6 1975 TOPPS MINI 345 CLAY CARROLL (I must have missed a wrinkle or other surface issue.)

The Washington was a crack out that was formerly holdered a 7. The phantom 7 is still in my set. It's one of the best Washington's I've seen.

The Goodson and Allen here or the ones in my set (I haven't decided which yet) will be for sale, or better yet, for trade for one or more of the 13 cards left in my set that I need to upgrade from 7 to 8. For those interested in a trade, the name of my registry set is Nick's 1975 Topps Mini Collection. I'll do a combination trade plus cash to make up the difference, as necessary. PM me if interested. I should have the cards back at the end of this week.

Nice work on the CW, Nick! The 8 in my set was also an undergraded 7 I cracked out and resubmitted.
