US Mint MEDALS *** Questions/Information?

Sorry for the "new" post/title on the new 9/11 Medal

I don't know very much about the medal program at the mint and was looking for some answers?

The new 9/11 Medal is the same size & weight as the ASE coin.
I have looked at the US MINT Web site and it looks like this new "medal" has a lot of First:
1. 100% silver (where the other ones I saw on the mint were just 90%)
2. Larger than most.

I still don't like the design but will this other "factors" make the coin (sorry) Medal worth more down the road??

I believe the same was said about the UHR. It may not sell out, but it has potential ... 2 different mint marks ... same composition as the ASE proof....similar price tag. I'm gonna stick my neck out & say it will be a winner down the road, just like the UHR was.

It may be a winner, but it's a failure in the design department. That's just my opinion.

I don't know, the same might have been said about the UHR at release but looking back you can why it has become so popular. I think these medals could have had potential but I think the design will hold them back a bit.

Has already been stated that this is to be struck on ASE blanks. First in composition to my knowledge.

Horrific design IMO, I would have bought even a mediocre one - this is not. I can hardly compare this to the UHR as this is but another medal and I don't see it even getting to the point of the Norse Centennial medal that is collected with the old commem silver 50c coins...BTW, that design was a good one as well.

Traditionally pieces that have been medals and not dollars or some other denomination have almost always had a poor investment track record. The reason is that many collectors want an item that is a coin (has a stated monetary value) and not a medal (does not have a state monetary value). About the only exceptions that come to mind are the Norse medals which some collectors include in their “old” commemorative half dollar sets.

In more recent times the mint issued a silver medal that was the size of silver dollar for Benjamin Franklin that celebrated his involvement in fire fighting, a bronze piece for Desert Store and, I believe, a three piece set of space exploration medals. None of these pieces made a ripple in the market. Yet the two Franklin commemorative dollars were a sell-out and had some traction in the secondary market for a while. With an authorized mintage of 2,000,000 pieces, which is very high for a commemorative issue, and a status as medals, I don’t see bright economic futures for these items.

IMHO This 911 Medal is a truly poor design and in no way representative of the terror and tragedy that fell upon our shores. The reverse design is equally a poor representation. with an inscription that is less than moving.

I agree. It's not outstanding, but it's not as bad as I was led to believe by the previous posts. Still it's a shame that the piece is not a silver dollar. That would have boosted the sales.

True. But since we already had 2 commems this year, the Mint had no choice. BTW the Mint sold over 12,000 in the first 2 hours. I suspect these will be more popular than the "hockey pucks."
