I don't know. What do you think happened to him?

Wow! Well, that will pay for all the cases and more. What are you hoping to get for it? 5k?
  • It will land to be graded on Monday. Solid PSA 9, possible 9.5 at the other. I think it could fetch 7 to possibly 10k. We'll see. This case has been ridiculous. All star game used, loads of Harper's. Harper Bowman's Best /99 etc. Half through 2 cases.

I have no earthly idea....did he get hurt and disappeared back into the minors. I couldn't think of his name earlier. I just remembered it now...Strasburg. Are his cards still good, or have they gone worthless yet?

Don't grade it - it's not worth the dough or the time lost since it won't gem. Huge pull, btw.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
  • I still get his base cards graded and they'll range from 15 to 30 in sales. There is a huge modern high grade market, especially for the stars. A lot of registry fans too.

Have pulled 4 printing plates and a Montero /99 Bowmans Best. Took a Chinese food break back to it. Still 7 jumbo boxes to go.

Huge hit and congrats. Sell the rest of the cases. Do it asap. Also, get it graded by BGS, modern graded PSA rookie autos don't compare.

Sold my base Harper for $9, the Machado auto redemption for $30 and I'm glad that they are gone!

Don't waste time grading it, sell it now! The more that get opened, the less you'll get for it.
  • Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to put it over on the BST forum and see if I can get any movement.

If not Sunday night I'll start a 10 day auction .99 starting bid with a reserve of $7,000.

Thoughts on that? This card is one in 17,000 Jumbo packs or 1 out of 544,000 cards. Or 1 in 1,416 cases.

I am so loyal to PSA and when I started grading back in early 09 I sent one submission to BGS. Then made it here. I grade all my cards through PSA. The base Harper Auto we hit at the end last night looks like a 10 and will send that to PSA. I agree on selling the other cases. I have 4 more and 7 boxes. I'll rip the 7 and sell the cases.

Have to replenish funds as I have 6 cases of Bowman Platinum coming. I've decide to go in heavier into the card market, as I truly see to fill voids in my life.

It fills the collector in me, the sports fan, the gambler, and the entrepreneur...

I type from my phone a lot so sorry for the grammar.

One last thing on the up and coming rookies. There is a player named Paul Goldschmidt. His numbers are incredible and blow Harpers away. Last year he hit .314, 35 HR's, 108 RBI's in 138 games. Slugging % of .606. Watch his cards they are Red Hot!!!

oh well - I guess it's only money. LOL

    Bryce Harper ebay completed listings
  • Yes it's a different era, and yes there are far too many companies and sub sets.

Bust just imagine... What it must of been like knowing 1960 topps is coming out and you can't wait to get down to your local 5 and dime. You can't wait to open that pack of your favorite player, pitcher, or star!! Let's say your a Red Sox fan as an example and you heard about this new player who was a great hitter. IE: Carl Yasztremski.

We just have more info, technology, and the ability to see the stars before they make it to the big leagues.

It's just a different Era and everyone is looking for that big score. It's the same excitement when you buy a Cobb and flip from a 3 to 4 because it sat in an old PSA holder. It's that same rush.

Strasburg, Harper whomever the hype, Blake Griffin. These guys have some real raw amazing talent. So the bet is to buy they're card and hope they put in 15 to 20 years and make it to the Hall.

Don't we all wish we stacked up on 86 Fleer Basketball when they wouldn't sell at $50 a box. I was only 9 then, but how I wish I could go back in time. Jeter foil RC's anyone going back 18 years.

The Era is different, grading is on, everything is serial #d, forget game used now it's laundry tags, pieces of almost anything sports.

I sold a RC shorts Tag of Patrick Ewing 2/2 a few months ago for $330. Collector's love these things.

Personally I like using modern to fund my personal vintage collection. I like looking at my Bowman Sterling Buster Posey Auto in a PSA 10 holder. I do hold onto a few modern's.

Wow. Ridiculous pricing. Completed listings seem to indicate a price range of 700 - 1500 on base autos. Good luck on your sale. The Nationals GM said earlier this week
that he will not be up this year. It s a big decision as the when the best time to sell is.

  • I think you're overestimating the value of that card.

I could be wrong, but if you put a reserve of $7k it's not going sell. For one, people don't like reserve auctions. And secondly, imo, no one is going to pay that much for it. Not sure what math you guys are using to get to $7-10K, but just because people put up ridiculous bins, doesn't mean that's the market value of the card (see Levi). The first page of the completed auctions has lots of unsold cards.

If you even get $5k I would take that and run. Honestly if you ran that card as a regular auction with no reserve, I think you're going to get $3-4k tops. Conservatively I would think it sells for $2,500. Still an idiotic amount of money that you should be more than happy to take for an artificially scarce modern card of an unproven player.

The purple /55 went unsold at $2,685.00. If you even double that, your /25 would go unsold at $5370. So there's reason to believe it wouldn't sell for $5k, and I don't see any reason why you should believe it would sell for $7k.

$50.00? When I was selling at shows around 87 and 88 I could have gotten all I wanted for TWELVE DOLLARS per box! But I was too smart to waste my money on basketball ... I bought about 5 - 10 CASES of '88 Donruss and Fleer Baseball!!!!!

Oh ... and about your hit? Congrats and SELL SELL SELL.

The highest actual sale I see on ebay is $1925 for the /250 blue, but then the next blues drop to $1200 and $1100. Also the /50 gold sold for $1200 and $900. There isn't as much hype around Harper as there was around Strasburg. I doubt the /25 goes for 7-10K. Only possible chance is if it were BGS 9.5 or 10. But still a nice pull.

  • A couple of things, and first off thanks again for all the advice!!

The Gold's you see /50 are just the base card. The black you see for the auto is not an auto. The Auto's are in blue. So base Gold Refractor's are selling for $900 to $1200. Again that is without an auto. Most of the Bowman cards are made with a reprint of the actual auto. Crazy huh?

Next the Blue Border Auto's have sold for $1500 to $1900 over the last couple of days. Those are /250 with an auto.

I don't see that a Purple Auto has sold yet and these are #D to /55. There are a few up between $2800 and $4900 with Buy it Now's. I don't see that any have sold. The least expensive one that came and went at $2685 yesterday.

I agree $7,000 is probably unrealistic, but we have to remember that this product has only been available for a week plus. The first in hand base harper sold on 5/12. This product is so new. If I can only get 3 or 4K Might be worth holding on to.

I also agree that this may not be or isn't Strasburg mania. But this card is only /25. It's all about the market and when someone wants something bad enough.

Thanks again everyone for the help and advice. Will let you know what I do.

I think you would have better results by listing it as a fixed price with BO option. Listed at 8 or 9K with a BO might get you a much quicker sale than a 10 day auction. With people ripping like crazy, more money will be going to the Harper BIN's. Also, with only a handful of people able and willing to drop that much on a Harper high end cards, they might spend their money before your auction ends.

$7999 with BO is what I would do as fast as I could.

Regardless of what you do, gratz on a hell of a pull!

Edited to add: With the signature like that, I wouldn't sub it to BGS. I think it would come back a 9 at best. Sell it raw with good pictures and you'll be fine if you package it and ship it well.

Even if this guy puts up Frank Thomas, or Griffey numbers, 20 years from now this card wont sell for even close to $1,000. Its a piss poor investment that relies on the "bigger fool" theory. Hundreds if not thousands more /25 Harper cards.....auto and not will eventually be made by the various companies over the next few years if he is the real deal. That will significantly water down the demand on this card. Even though this is his RC card, it wont matter much. Even Jordan rookies have drastically fallen in price......as have any RC cards of players who retire and are no longer in the day to day spotlight. Remember when the Star #101 was worth $5,000? Remember when the Nolan Ryan RC was worth $1200? Remember when you couldnt touch a 1985 Topps McGwire for under $100? All of these "cant miss" investments can now be bought for pennies on the dollar. Sell that Harper.....in auction.....no reserve on Ebay starting tomorrow night if you want to find the "biggest fool" out there currently. Cuz its all downhill from this point forward on that card!
  • I'd probably run it as an auction for 7 days and start it at $4999.99 and hope you get an opening bid before another shows up on ebay.

Bowman Chrome Gold Refractors are extremely popular, signed or unsigned. And it's not really that crazy they are made with facsimile autos, given that's how baseball cards have been designed for 50 years.

Do not do a 10 day, do a three day.

If this was a normal rare card the longer the better. In this case move it fast!!!!

Start a three day auction at $0.99 and be glad with where it closes.

Time is running out, these only go down from the initial pop.....

  • I here you Dpeck.

If another one doesn't get pulled then maybe that's an advantage.

I still think this product is only 12 days old, and 3 since official release. Maybe this is the gambler, but if there is only 1 other out there at 10k.

Strasburg last year increased after release. It didn't go down in price a week from when his cards hit. I know Harper isn't at may e the same hype, and the economy is probably worse.

I dunno. Anymore assistance or thoughts, again thanks as I don't sell cards like this.

Like everyone else says - sell. And this is from a modern collector. The first sale on this stuff is often the best for a while, and rarely (never?) is it the worst. Do it as a 3 day auction with a starting price anywhere south of 2500. You are going to make money - don't be the guy that tries to squeeze every last dollar out of it. Because someone else will pull one tomorrow and sell his for a dollar less, and you just lost the potential highest bidder.
