Lane, you put Marchand at #3 in the agitator category. Just curious as to where you would place Sean Avery? I think he might be the NHL's Crown Prince of douchebaggery. Of course, when he was still active, Darcy Tucker was right there with him.
I'm guessing that Roberto Luongo's chances of winning the Conn Smythe aren't real good right now, but if the Bruins win game seven with another onslaught, Luongo could win the award as Boston's most valuable player.

Maybe for a lifetime achievement award. For this season, Avery wouldn't even be in my top 5. He really only had one incident this year. No suspensions. I don't recall any headshots or knee on knee hits or anything this year. As I mentioned in that post, Tortorella has curbed Avery's act with healthy scratches as he was trying to limit PIMs with the Rangers top 2 penalty killers - Drury and Callahan missing significant time to injury...and on top of that, there have been rumors of the Rangers buying out his contract so he kept himself in check for the most part. Everyone has their own opinion of what an "agitator" is. You have guys like Burish and your boy Chad LaRose who constantly run their gobs, but they aren't cheapshot artists. Burish is the league's top trash-talker. The guy who skates up to D.Sedin and says "your brother is one ugly mofo". Then you have tweeners. Guys who should be enforcers, but don't really play by the "Enforcer Code". Gillies, C.Neil, D.Dorsett etc. The list would change year to year. Last season you'd have to have Avery, Carcillo, and Kaleta in the top 5. This year, they'd all drop out. Kaleta was out with injuries half of the season, Carcillo was healthy scratched 25 games, and obviously Tortorella neutered Avery's act this year. So right now, for me, it would be Cooke, Ott, Marchand, Downie, and Burrows in that order. That's taking into account everything. Suspensions as a result of taking liberties, yapping, diving, headshots, knee on knee hits, boarding, elbowing, hits from behind, not answering for your actions, hiding behind teammates etc. Dishonorable mention to Lapierre, J.Ruutu, Kostopoulos, and the 3 aforementioned dopes - Avery, Carcillo, and Kaleta. FWIW, J.Tootoo would have also been in the running for previous seasons, but like the Rangers with Avery, Nashville also largely neutered J.Tootoo's act. He also missed a great portion of the season due to undergoing alcohol abuse treatment.
TSN compiled their list of All-time agitating d-bags. I don't agree with any list that doesn't include Cooke and Ciccarelli. But for those that don't have 22 minutes to kill, they are
1. Barnaby 2. Bryan Watson* 3. Steve Ott 4. Ken Linsemen 5. Avery 6. C. Lemieux 7. Billy Smith 8. Dale Hunter 9. D.Tucker 10. Eddie Shack
Half of these guys were before my time, but of what I know about Watson comes from this story from Bobby Hull
*Bobby Hull was constantly agitated by Watson esp when Watson was with the Wings. Watson would continually slash Hull and one night Hull faked a slapshot and just carved up Watson's face from his ear to his chin with his stick blade. To which Hull later regaled, "and I did it without remorse". Watson gets stitched up and comes back later when Pierre Pilote promptly boards him into the glass and opens him up again. Watson again goes back in for stitches. Watson comes back out minutes later when Moose Vasko opens him up again with another facewash into the glass. Bugsy once again goes in for stitches and once again gets hit by Eric Nestorenko opening him yet again to which finally ended Watson's night. Hull ends his story with "I would not urinate into his ear if his brain was on fire".
<< <i> Btw, Borat's comment was taken out of context. He wasn't trying to bury Thomas. He was asked a question on that particular shot, and he simply noted that it was a shot that wasn't a difficult block. . >>
Lebrongo could have stated how all goalies have to be aware of side angle shots on rebounds or bad bounces off the boards. Instead, he decides to tell people how he can play that shot better then TT can. Please Lebrongo.
What if they asked TT about all the Bruins shots that the Bruins scored on him in Boston, and he said how he could have stopped all of those because his style is different then Lebrongo's.
<< <i>That is complete BS about Luongo's statement and it was not taken out of context. He acted like a little baby about Thomas not pumping his tires.
uh the "pumping his brakes" comment came the day after Borat's original response to the question he was posed. You know, after the Boston media tried to build a "story" from a nothing comment fueled by some dope columnist who called the comment '"despicable". >>
Bottom line he could have just said no comment instead of mocking TT's style of play. Luongo made the story, not the Boston media. You turn everything into a Boston negative.

That's because everything about Boston is so wonderfully easy to hate. I'm sure all those die-hard Bruins fans up in Chestnut Hill will be lighting their chinos on fire after tonight's win!
Although, in fairness to the B's, they aren't nearly as unlikeable as this Vancouver team. Nice work, Captain Henrik; nothing like going -3 through the first two periods of a game 7. If I'm Kesler I quietly go up to Mike Gillis this summer and tell him to either ship those two Swedes to another team or ship my own happy ass to a team that isn't stocked with neurotics and tin men.

Let the haters hate, I don't care. I'm anxiously awaiting Lane's 3 paragraph diatribe about how lucky the Bruins were to win it all.
F that overrated Luongo, F the soft Sedin twins, F the Canuck fans that needed exactly 15 minutes to light a car on fire after losing. I don't recall any riots when the Celtics lost to the Lakers last year, or when the Pats lost to the Giants......Sorry we keep winning titles....that's just what we do in Boston. Get used to it, we may be doing it all again in October!!!
WE WON THE CUP!!! WE WON THE CUP!!! WE WON THE CUP!!!
Clearly you haven't read (or recall, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt) any other CU hockey threads over the last few years. Otherwise you'd know I dislike the VAN franchise from top to bottom more than any other in the NHL...starting with Gillis. And that's saying a lot because I absolutely despise the Blues. The Canucks are currently the Hawks most heated rival you know. Sure the league is a lesser place with Thornton, McQuaid, Ference, Boychuk, and Marchand's names on the Cup, but I thought the same of Nick Boynton's engraving last year.

I know no one is going to confuse an archetypal BOS fan with rational objectivity, but I don't think you really want to call out Canuck fans when any yob can visit youtube and type in "Red Sox Riots", or "'08 Celtics riot" and view a number of examples of moronic exhibitions. The Red Sox/Yankee fan interaction in the comments sections are pure English-killing mouthbreathing awesomeness. Besides, whatever stupidity Canucks or Bruins fans engage in tonight will always pale in comparison to Montreal fans. Win or lose, playoffs or regular season, one thing is a certain. A police cruiser is getting torched.
Laner, go home. I said it before you know your hockey, but enough with the bashing of Boston or almost every team/player. Hockey has been a rough sport with many many cheapshots since they started freezing ice and putting a net on it. The game has changed and I don't know if it is the sensitivity of head shots, more TV coverage or less fighting in the game which does not allow the game to police itself.
I look forward to seeing/reading your rational objectivity in CU hockey threads again....say around the beginning of Round 2 of the NHL playoffs next year.
