<< <i>up 3-0 vs. Philly....not bad for a bunch of goons, hey lane?
I know right, and much like the Penguins, it's not like Philly is missing it's two best players - a top 10 NHL scorer, and the best defensive defenseman in the league either...<wink>. So that's really not that surprising (though I had BOS 4-2) that BOS is up 3-0. What astounded me (while looking up some stats) is that BOS posted a collective top 5 offense with that roster + Savard being out + BOS turning Horton from a skill player into a...grinder/fighter/punching bag + Kaberle's sucktitude....then I realized...oh yeah they don't have to play against Flint Thomas, and since every other EC goalie (save for Lundquist, Price, and Vokoun) is mediocre or completely sucks (coupled with 7 of the NHL's worst defensive teams) it almost makes some sense. But that's pretty marbles of you to acknowledge a 3-0 lead given the results of last year's match-up and all. That said, personally I'm intrigued by a BOS/TB series. A couple of middling defenses + the best goalie in the league + an AARP rep aping 2007 J.S. Giguere performing way over his playoff head in net.

Yes, Philly is missing Carter and Pronger is a huge loss. The B's do not have their top ten scorer in Savard and he is also their PP quaterback. I am having a problem and not understanding your shot at Horton. He was never a skilled hockey player. He in my eyes has been a dissappointment since he entered the league and has never reached his full potential. I will say this, I prefer that he play this style, than what he was doing in FLA. He is 6'3 and 230lbs. He is now playing with an edge and using that frame of his. I don't know about you but I prefer hockey players that hit fight and score goals. What is your issue with the Bruins? Is that they have a great goalie? Cheapshots? Not enough good players?
<<<I know right, and much like the Penguins, it's not like Philly is missing it's two best players - a top 10 NHL scorer, and the best defensive defenseman in the league either...<wink>. >>>
That fact is not lost on me.....BUT, every team has it's injuries, and who knows, if Krecji didn't break his wrist in Game 4 last year, maybe the Bruins wouldn't have choked that series away. Perhaps it's karma's way of evening things out......
at least we can agree that Roloson is a big question mark....
Without knowing what goes into GVT, its hard for me to interpret what comes out....but it sounds like +/- is involved somehow, and the Bruins had the second best +/- in the league, so it doesn't surprise me they have a top 5 GVT.....they certainly don't have any elite scorers or playmakers, they just roll out 4 solid lines most nights, and work their system.
Goot - you going to any of the EC Final games?....

no it really has nothing to do with +/-. It's just a single metric, like WAR (wins above replacement) or VORP (value over replacement player) in baseball to determine one player's collective offensive + defensive value. It's very accurate, although it's a bit tilted for goalies as it tends to overvalue them. The Bruins respective players would get a huge boost from Flint Thomas' historic season as their DGVT (defensive goals versus threshold) so that's a large part of it given their extremely low team goals against. I'll disagree with 4, but the Bruins do have 3 solid lines so that helps.
<< <i> Goot - you going to any of the EC Final games?.... >>
I have season tickets so I plan to be at all of them in Tampa. The only thing that may potentially get in the way is that my school semester just wrapped up and I am taking a couple summer night classes at the community college back home (2 hours from Tampa on the east coast of FL), which happen to start around the same time the series will start. Depending on the schedule, I may have to miss one or maybe all of them . Worst case scenario I just sell the tickets and make a killing so either way it's not terrible. As long as they can win it's fine by me.
Concussion for Bergeron...huge blow to the Bruins. I'm hoping one of the Western Conference series goes seven to give him as much time to come back, if possible.
this Det/SJ series could be one of those "be careful what you wish for" examples. Not to look past the Bolts, but I want to see SJ close this series out in 6. Detroit scares the crap out of me.
Thornton has actually been playing 200 feet for the first time in his career. He's been pretty solid thus far aside from the 6 penalties. 10 points, 2 game winners inc. 1 in OT, and nearly 60% at the dot.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day- you put the guy into enough playoff series' and eventually the puck's going to bounce off his stick the right way over a few games. Nice two hander on the back of Zetterberg's achilles with 10 seconds to go tonight, by the way. I figured he'd board Datsyuk at some point, since mauling 150 lb dudes when behind by 2 goals is generally how Joe likes to assert himself physically, but I guess he had other plans for tonight.
well he's largely been matched up against Zetterleto and has held him to 2 points and 3 sub- 43% games at the dot. I know Hank isn't fully healthy, but Thornton has played well this series when previously he would've been a ghost...such as last year's series against the Hawks. SJ has even run him out there on the kill. Obviously I'd rather see him run Jagwall or The Felon opposed to a clean player like Datsyuk, but there are multiple players from the Wings who are never allergic to stickwork behind the play in general either...including Zetterleto. I'd venture to guess Joe has taken his share from Henry himself.

Z is no stranger to the cheap shot, so I'm sure Joe has been on the receiving end a few times himself. But with Joe it's never the actual cheap shot that's so infuriating, it's the timing. He'll completely disappear when his team actually needs him (although, in fairness,he HAS shown up in the Det. series, unlike Marleau), then he'll suddenly channel his inner Ulf Samuelsson when the game is out of reach. I don't mind that from guys like Dino C. or Theoren Fleury , but come on- when you're 6'4" you need to do better than that, especially in May.
Joe is a good player, what makes him frustrating is his style of play for a big guy. You expect him to bang, play in front of the net and give you 40G and 60A. Instead he likes to play behind the net and dish instead of shoot.
Excited for the Lightning to finally start back up. With that long lay off it was already beginning to feel like the offseason! It will be interesting to see how the Lightning/Bruins come back from all of that time off. Luckily they are playing each other, so both teams will have some rust, rather than coming in against a team (like San Jose) cranking on all cylinders.
Vancouver has actually been outscored in the playoffs 33-30 mostly the result of receiving no secondary scoring outside of their top 4 players. (+ a lot of fortunate bounces in the CHI series). That said, Vancouver was 2-0-2 against the Sharks this year. A key player in the series may be Ryan Clowe. He's stepped up his scoring, but he's taken a league leading 9 minor penalties for a team that has a bottom five PK. He also leads in giveaways (19). SJ has also only converted on 13.7% of their PP opportunities while the Canuckles have killed off 86% of the PP's in the playoffs thus far. On paper VAN should emerge in 6 but if SJ/Clowe can stay out of the box, SJ continues to roll up a team 54% at the dot, and VAN continues to receive nothing from their secondary forwards like Raymond, Samuelsson, and the bottom 6 grinders. SJ can push this to 7 where they can relive past glories from the DET series.

Being on the East Coast, I don't see much of the Sharks, but I watched Game 7 of the DET/SJ series, and what stuck for me beyond how well Thornton played, was how Klowe constantly "lived on the edge". His goaltender interference call might have been the single stupidest penalty I've seen in the playoffs (right next to Bergeron's high stick with 2:30 left from 190 feet from his net). Again, it was only one game, but Klowe's style seems like it is poised to hurt SJ more than it will help.
<< <i>His goaltender interference call might have been the single stupidest penalty I've seen in the playoffs (right next to Bergeron's high stick with 2:30 left from 190 feet from his net). >>
Justin Abdelkader of Detroit getting a elbowing penalty way behind the play with 5:00 left in the 3rd of game 6 - right after Detroit had taken the lead - would rank right up there as well. And that's just one of several from Abdelkader this playoff.

Clowe is a force. Rafalski had something to do with Clowe's interferene call, if you saw a replay. It looked stupid (i was at the game). Things happen so fast. The wings lost Bertuzzi when he checked Heatley, and poor Cleary, ouch. Without Franzen (i don't count Modano, now) really hurt the Wings. Don't count out home ice for game seven either.
what a depressing game that was, Bruins were completely dismantled....Bergeron was sorely missed, especially on faceoffs.....the only bright spot was Seguin, hopefully Claude saw the light, and starts to put him out there on the PP.
I don't put too much stock into NHL coaching, but for whatever it is worth, the Lightning have a gigantic edge in that department this series.
Bergeron was sorely missed, especially on faceoffs
yup - Krejci 3/18 (guh), Peverley 6/16. Bergeron has been especially money on face-offs while short-handed - 21 of 29. No need to panic yet. Something has to eventually give with TB's shot differential - 26.7 shots per game while allowing 35.5 shots against per game (16th out of the 16 playoff teams) along with an equally unsustainable shooting% - 13% for the playoffs, against 9.2% for the regular season. Plus eventually Rolo will realize he's...well, Rolo, and 42. Of course the Bruins rolling up a 2-for-31 on the PP throughout the playoffs isn't helping matters.
The B's only have only themselves to blame after that loss. They gave up three really bad goals to go down 3-0 and the PP has contiue to be a huge dissappointment.

Supposedly, Seguin was practicing on 2nd PP line w/Bergeron today....not sure what that means for the lineup tommorow night or later in the series. Unlike a lot of people in Boston, I'm not a Michael Ryder basher, but he has disappeared since Game 4 against Montreal. If someone is going to sit for Seguin, my vote is for him.
well, this is getting interesting....Ryder puts in 2 rebounds (off 2 Seguin assists)....Claude is going to have a tough decision when Bergeron comes back. He has no excuse not to give Seguin regular PT now. I know Claude is loyal to Thornton, but he's the most obvious candidate to sit. No need for an enforcer in the playoffs.
The Bruins pretty much executed their game plan to perfection. The difference with Bergeron in the line up is amazing, and Thomas actually looked like Tim Thomas for once. They scored early and took the crowd out of it a bit too, which certainly helped them.

i'm glad they won, too. and kept up their end and more in the third period.
at first i thought a referee's inadvertent screen in the corner helped somewhat to open that play up for Lucic to make that pass, but it seemed Downie was hopelessly out of position.
we'll see if the Sharks are another "gongshow" tonight.

Not that it matters, but that play was Hedman's fault.
I second that!!! Congrats to Vancouver. They look like the team this year especially against Boston. I think if Tampa Bay is able to come back, they match up better against the Canucks. JMHO.
What a game last night. One of the most bizarre plays you'll ever see, but that is overtime for you...just shoot, shoot, shoot. That's what I do.

Fantastic series Bruins fans. If you would have told me at the beginning of the season that the Lightning would make it that far I would have been absolutely shocked! In fact, I still am to be honest. This year was being called a rebuild, and my hopes were that they would at least challenge for the playoffs and they certainly went above and beyond. Sucks to make it this far and lose, but the fact that it is hopefully only the beginning of something great makes it a little easier to swallow. Both teams have good solid cores that should be intact for the next few years so who knows, we may see each other again next postseason?
I look forward to the Stanley Cup this year, good luck to both teams. It should be a very interesting match up!
Rolo was standing on his head last night, I wasn't sure the B's were ever going to score. Very even series between two teams that should be in the mix for a few years.
